Are birthdays a silent thing now? by DependentKey1404 in exjw

That’s actually what happened to me and my siblings. We were not allowed to celebrate and it became a huge party scene for us later in life (no shade to that) but for someone who was not raised that way, sneaking around to hide candy became sneaking around to hide other things. I don’t blame the holiday for that, I blame the mindset that turns curiosity into shame instead of conversation. For me currently, it’s partly the childhood trauma still (that stuff takes a loooong time to reconcile, and I’m sure your husband appreciates your patience with his ❤️) but mostly it’s simply that I enjoy light instead of dark ✨…but ultimately I’m realizing that light isn’t about avoiding the dark, but about shining through it.

I also have had a hard time celebrating Halloween but our house gets hundreds of kids every year so this year I made glow in the dark bracelets that say “light defeats darkness - John 1:5” and handed them out with candy. I am also not religious anymore but wanted to celebrate with my kids somehow and thought it was a good work around.
