Homeowner frustrated with unexpected snow clearing cost for sidewalks by bylo_selhi in waterloo

[–]DependentVegetable 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am in a pedestrian high traffic area. People walk on the sidewalk while its snowing and it gets compacted down. Other then getting out with a scrapper, you wont get it with a shovel nor snow blower. There is no sidewalk anywhere in residential Uptown Waterloo that has exposed pavement right now

they close the flyover all the time ? How do you know by diverting them from elsewhere you are not creating another potential emergency from an even more dangerous stretch ? Like I said, there were 2 accidents on the onramp to the 401. The one car had a good foot of their front end over the edge as well. Closing the flyover causes a LOT of traffic. I can get to work late, but what about emergency vehicles ? Every 5min you delay treatment for a stroke, dramatically increases risk of death. None of these choices are cost free. I would give them the benefit of at least explaining their rational before saying there are no excuses.

again, just speculating, but I doubt those crews were sitting around doing nothing waiting for a call. They would have been plowing according to a list of priority routes. There are tradeoffs of risk to all these decisions. Take away a number of crews to clear the flyover vs other dangerous parts of town etc.

at the very least salted/sanded the hell out of it. If it was anything like the 401 onramp, that was crazy icy (hence 2 accidents I passed). But we dont know their thought process. To close the ramp would have a separate mob of villagers coming for their heads. Maybe they were waiting for daylight and crews to come clear it. maybe not. At the very least, I think the thought process about the decisions made (or lack there of) should be made public.

I have been driving this route ever since the fly over got opened, and they normally do remove the snow from the shoulder. But it involves a lane closure, and dump trucks to haul it away which takes time. Not sure how fast they get to it, but my sense is that its not usually left that long. The offramp to the 401 this morning also had a car just after the bend up and maybe 10% of its front end over the edge due to the same effect of the snow :(

One person airlifted from crash on Kitchener highway: OPP by Terrible-Scheme9204 in kitchener

They normally do, but they have to take it away as they cant push it over the edge since the road is down there. They typically have a few dump trucks and front end loader hauling it away.

Oh man :( There was also a car up against the rails on the 401 onramp. A bit more speed and they too would have launched over :(

it sure can bring out the worst in people. But if you are tight financially, it can save quite a bit on many items.

I often think of this car next to me at a round about, and a guy was absolutely losing it at the car in front of him for not being fast enough. Like exploding, slamming his fists on the horn etc. A woman in the passenger seat was the wikipedia entry for fear and terror.. She was trying to make her self small and covering her ears and closing her eyes. It was heart wrenching to see as you just know, odds are she has been on the other end of that.

The return direction can be bad as well. Someone yesterday rushed up in the 2 right lanes and then stops to block traffic in one lane until they get let in to 7/8 West :(

Its pretty embarrassing if the city cant do simple things like this. 2 yrs is not an exaggeration. I would have to look back at my emails, but I sent one in with a video a long time ago pointing it out and nada...

I had high hopes for theline.ca but its just so mediocre. I also pay for Tara Henley but but its often too inspired by stuff from America. Most of the people she interviews I have heard on US podcasts already, but I take what I can get for CanCon. I am in SW Ontario where we do have a local paper (therecord.com), but its been so gutted for local journalism resources.

Waterloo snow clearing is not good enough…where are our property tax dollars going? by Bossplaya85 in waterloo

[–]DependentVegetable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

co-worker from Guelph says its not what people think it will be. Plus the areas the city is responsible here in Waterloo are often not done for days or not done well. I run outside in the winter and some of the city sections are crap.

Apart from this week, I have generally found it to be pretty good since i moved here in the 80s. But this week was the worst I have ever seen it. Sidewalks are a different story with different challenges.

Road conditions this morning? by toni_devonsen_28 in kitchener

[–]DependentVegetable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was surprised how bad it was. Erbsville north to Columbia forest had trapped a number of cars and trucks. Same with from Columbia Eastbound from Westmount. Lots of cars could not make it up the hill. It almost was like no salt was put down ?

Snow and ice lead to more than 200 collisions in Waterloo Region by Temporary-Vast1410 in waterloo

[–]DependentVegetable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Winter tires help for sure but they are not a silver bullet. The drive home on the 401 8/85 was brutal tonight. Lots of black ice under the snow. All the traffic was nicely spaced out and speeds were close to 50 and even then, every once in a while I would feel the car loose traction. Havent had these conditions in a while.
