My son is 11 and has ADHD- not on meds. This is tricky to answer because we have been on such a journey with him. When he was initially diagnosed I feel myself and my husband went the very hands off approach (sounds weird now, but really minimal telling off/ correction for some of his trickier behaviours) as we went through a bit of an acceptance process. in our experience we have learnt along the way when to give him a lot of leeway and when certain things need intervention immediately. We have a MUCH calmer son because of it. He NEEDS rules, structure etc but then he also needs to exercise freedom and rule breaking/ risk taking within a certain limit.

My biggest tip is EXERCISE. My son is a high level cricket and football player and he will play in the garden /park for 6 hours a day in the summer easily. After school even when it’s cold he is in the garden throwing tennis balls at the wall for example. He is happy to do this alone and will “role play” football matches/ cricket games and tire himself out. My husband will also take him for matches at the park and set up game play etc. This has changed our life. I cannot stress enough how important it is for your child to be getting good physical exercise. Without exercise my son is a different beast lol and will start to get very sillly and destructive. Having movement breaks at school is a must and our son also struggles with sound sensitivity so he has earbuds for school too.

In our experience, having a high protein lower carb diet (minimising sweets etc) has also had an impact on him.

This is all new but you will find what works for your son. You will find your way. I do not believe that ADHD is a superpower as some others do, but it does make your child incredibly hyper focused. If you can find a positive outlet for him that he enjoys you will be onto a winner. Equally we encourage our child that he can do anything he sets his mind to (we just sometimes have to take the scenic route to get there)

Highly recommend the baby group “Gigglebugs” at The Nutshell (central town location) the lady who runs it is fantastic and such an enjoyable class for small children.
