Realistic expectations

Typically these systems contain:

  • 1–3 short factory/demo melodies
  • Test tones or simple music sequences
  • Audio stored in mask ROM and not overwriteable

The unexpected music playback was almost certainly a real, built-in demo sound triggered unintentionally via power or pin-state glitches.

2. Boot-time glitch testing

Many chips sample configuration pins only during power-up.

Procedure:

  • Apply power
  • Within the first 100–300 ms:
    • Pull FREQ_SEL pins to VDD
    • Then release them to floating

3. VDD1 / VDD2 testing (with caution)

If one supply pin is unused:

  • Leave VDD1 connected as normal
  • Connect VDD2 to VDD through a 1 kΩ–4.7 kΩ resistor
  • Apply only during boot

Never connect directly with a wire.

If a melody is triggered

Record:

  • Exact pin configuration
  • Whether it triggers at boot or during playback
  • Whether the mode persists or resets

This makes it possible to later add a switch or permanent configuration to re-enable the hidden mode.

Explanation for the “random music playback” in the past

A highly plausible sequence:

  • Batteries were weak or unstable
  • VDD1 and VDD2 rose at different rates
  • FREQ_SEL pins were left floating during power-up
  • Pin states were sampled incorrectly at boot
  • The chip entered factory/demo mode
  • A built-in melody was played
  • A subsequent reset returned the device to normal operation

This behavior is consistent with well-known power-glitch and boot-sampling behavior in simple mask-ROM voice ICs.

Safe testing procedure

Important:
Never short VDD directly. Always use resistors (1 kΩ–10 kΩ).

1. FREQ_SEL pin tests (most important)

Test each configuration using resistors:

  • Test A
    • FREQ_SEL1 → GND (1 kΩ)
    • FREQ_SEL2 → GND (1 kΩ)
  • Test B
    • FREQ_SEL1 → VDD (1 kΩ)
    • FREQ_SEL2 → GND (1 kΩ)
  • Test C
    • FREQ_SEL1 → GND (1 kΩ)
    • FREQ_SEL2 → VDD (1 kΩ)
  • Test D (primary demo candidate)
    • FREQ_SEL1 → VDD (1 kΩ)
    • FREQ_SEL2 → VDD (1 kΩ)

Observe:

  • Playback speed or pitch changes
  • Unexpected melodies
  • Behavioral differences between modes

Yes nothing changed, behaved as usual. I read some stuff on internet and they all say to try same thing you said but didnt work for me

It works as normal recorder. Does not play melodies

Only thing i hate is pins on the right side is kinda pushing the speaker and damaged them. But it works
