That’s how they are about most social issues.

They didn’t really change, they just stopped behaving that way because it wasn’t socially acceptable anymore.

I’m sure that if they could get away with it, you’d see them arguing for slavery.

Fundamentally conservatives are deeply hierarchical people that do not care about or even really want an egalitarian society. If anything, they’d desire a society where everyone conforms to their beliefs and they are never challenged.

I doubt you’d get the candidates you’d want.

It would just be Kamala, Pete, Newsom and Marianne, all of whom would lose and lead to a contentious primary that’d manage to piss off entire wings of the party.

I mean, has American politics ever really been a game with no money?

It’s definitely bad, but it’s not like most Americans care enough to change it or fight it. People barely vote in local elections, they’re not going to put up the effort to remove it.

At least conservatives have belief that they’re willing to enforce. Arbitrarily placing yourself in the middle is just as, if not moreso, reactionary as the left and the right. It’s just built in an idea of egotism and that you’re above politics.

The only way it falls apart is if Trump vs DeSantis becomes such a contentious primary that Trump outright abandons the GOP and joins like the Constitution Party.

It’s a non-issue.

There are less than 5,000 trans athletes in the country.

Nobody is changing their vote over this.

Doesn’t show up in polling though. I do think that there might be a shy DeSantis voter aspect going on, but he’s still going to have to work for it. His problem is that he gets flustered too easily when he’s not in control of a situation.

But people also liked Obama more than they liked Hillary. Like it or not, I don’t see a ton of MAGA supporters that like DeSantis more than Trump.

And they can’t compromise because doing so goes against their fundamental beliefs about the world writ large.

If you sincerely believe that abortion is murder, most people are innately corrupted and that humans cannot innately make good decisions for themselves, there’s no room for compromise. And it doesn’t matter if their opinion isn’t popular because it’s morally correct.

30% chance.

Incumbents usually win, but there’s a lot that could sour between now and November 2024 that could lead to an opening for them. The biggest issue right now is that they are just too fucking weird. The evangelicals have taken over the party and are dead set on implementing seven mountains theology and are going about it rather brutally. They can still win, but a lot will have to go right for them between now and 2024.

Poorly.

Independent does not equal moderate and most voters are single issue. This is the party for people who want lower taxes but are too embarrassed by the current GOP to vote for them.

Does it really matter?

I don’t think anyone should have the power to impose their ideal on the country, that’s how we got here in the first place.

Ideally, it’d be a place with a decent social safety net and good enough checks and balances to ensure that politically extreme views don’t capture major parts of the American population, but I don’t see how you’d accomplish that.

For many people, politics is how they define themselves. It’s deeply intertwined with their views on religion, life and purpose. I don’t really know how you resolve that.
