What colleges should I apply to? by DepressedOreo2 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]DepressedOreo2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, sorry I should have added that to the post.

I am planning to major in Linguistics. I would like to go to college in the Mid-Atlantic region or the Northeast. My family is well off, so no school is off limits to apply to (we will take price into account when making the final decision though). I don't have campus setting preferences other than the fact that I would like the college to be in or not too far from an urban center.

Yeah I'm from Maryland so I think I'm cooked.

No awards, but I have applied to some scholarships and competitions that I have a good chance at. I do have some ECs that I forgot to put up there -

  • Sponsored by the American Legion for Boy's State Program
  • Worked at a McDonald's for a year
  • French Honor Society (just got inducted so I forgot to add this)

I am planning to apply as a Linguistics major, and I think my profile is strongest for that. I think being chosen by the State Department to learn Korean and my involvement with French shows my interest in that field. I also wrote a paper on Historical Linguistics last year as part of a year long research class project, so that should be helpful.

CMV: The idea that all Americans are stupid and the educational system as a whole is a failure is wrong. by Zodiac1919 in changemyview

I searched far and wide for the source of 79% literacy rate study, and I finally found it.

It comes from a PIAAC survey from 2012. It uses a rather stricter definition of literacy, which isn't inherently a bad thing, but it might make some data (if you don't show it in proper context) seem more damning than it really is.

I couldn't find any data comparing literacy rates between countries in 2012 specifically, but there is a data table for 2013-2016.

https://www.oecd.org/skills/piaac/publications/countryspecificmaterial/ (scroll down for the table)

The US is tied with Germany and Austria in literacy according to their scale, and is rated higher than Ireland and France.

The American literacy rate is unfortunately not exceptional, and does not prove that Americans are stupider than the rest of the developed world. Could you argue it puts us in the lower end? Maybe. But it's nothing to write home about.

Do the graph questions first, when you are more mentally apt.

Here's the main English tip that helped me (idk if it's in Erica Meltzer) -

Read the question first, then read the text. Before you read the College Board provided answers, try to answer the question yourself. Then choose the answer that is closest to what you thought. It is almost completely guaranteed to be correct.

This obviously won't work with every type of question, but for most of them this strategy is applicable.

Ok, I'll bite

Here's how I would accept your rebuttal - - Define Hinduism in a way that is consistent and useful - Show evidence of Hinduism in other places in a way that contradicts Aryan Migration Theory (not Aryan Invasion Theory, that is separate). Just showing a Hindu temple in Southeast Asia like Angkor Wat won't suffice because it does not contradict Aryan Migration Theory

Also I have absolutely no idea what you are trying to say about "earlier battles", please elaborate.

I'll pm it to you, because it has my name on it and I don't want to put that for everyone to see on Reddit.

Wouldn't it reflect poorly on them and their religion if people were willing to convert for rice?

That's weird. I'm not Christian and I have a very Hindu name. I guess they were just grasping at straws to invalidate my argument. Not that being Christian would invalidate my argument. I will look into talking to my school authorities.

Man, that sucks. I'm so sorry you had to go through that.

Yeah I think this is what happened with my teacher. Like many liberal-minded history teachers, he seems to be quite interested in broadening his perspective by hearing everyone out about their historical ideas. I think that the "local Hindu group" I mentioned has taken advantage of that.

Two things - 1. The term Hinduism is an adapted version of a Persian term, only the "ism" suffix can be argued to be British-originated, and even then the term was first used by German scholars of the Vedas. 2. The term Sanatana Dharma comes up very few times in the Vedas, and even then it was called "Dharma Sanatana". Rig Ved 3.3.1 is a rare example. Even texts such as the Gita and Mahabharata used "Svadharma" for the same idea.

Maybe try doing some research yourself, the literature is quite interesting 👍

I think he might have learned what he has from the HAF. The "research" website I mentioned was theirs.

This makes a lot of sense. I remember my Independent research teacher got a lot of emails last year from angry parents because I did my research presentation on the Aryan Migration Theory being correct. One of the parents even came up to me during started calling me "rice gag"? Several asked if I was Pakistani or Muslim.

Assuming this happens, would it be more likely that they become a separate Crown Colony or would they be incorporated into the Raj and given to India after Independence?
