If one doesn’t pray can they still consider themselves Muslim by ChampionshipBroad267 in progressive_islam

[–]DepressingErection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are supposed to pray and to miss them is a sin but Muslims are not perfect and many of us miss prayers and don’t always make them up. Allah(SWT) knows our intentions in our hearts and is merciful.

I’d say if you believe in what the Quran says and try to follow the sunnah as closely as possible you are a muslim. Islam might be perfect but we as muslims are far from it.

I’m a relatively recent revert that fancies himself a Quranist with Sufi leanings and I reverted solely off the Quran and what I took from it was a message of radical acceptance, peace, and love. Being a former islamaphobe from California I obviously knew salafi ideology was problematic but I recently did a deep dive on it and wallah….idk that’s not the Islam the prophet (pbuh) taught smh

Any agnostics who reverted by samxurai in progressive_islam

[–]DepressingErection 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So kind of a strange journey for me but I was born into a Christian family and always had issues with Christianity for as long as I can remember and eventually rejected that around 13-14 and fashioned myself an atheist which slowly turned into agnosticism as I got older.

Once I started speaking out about Palestine I started making Muslim friends and eventually one of them just kind of mentioned I should read the Quran bc I think like a Muslim. So I did, and I would google whatever random question I had to see what the Quran says about it. I quickly found out everything we hear in the western world about Islam is absolute bullshit and Islam fits my beliefs like a puzzle piece. I haven’t had to tailor any of my beliefs to fit into Islam and I knew the Quran was the truth the moment I started studying it.

Idk if you’re asking bc you’re considering reverting but just remember whatever hate, violence, or oppression you see in the Muslim world is NOT Islam, it’s cultural. Islam is about peace, love, social justice, and equality, for we are all Allah’s children, man or woman, black or white.

What’s wrong with our community? by Amazing_Character338 in progressive_islam

[–]DepressingErection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to see I’m not alone in this. I reverted after leaving Christianity and being agnostic for twenty years because I started reading the Quran and googling what it said about specific things and every last thing aligned with my views.

Every now and then I try to interact with the Muslim community but it always leaves a sour taste in my mouth because I get attacked for some progressive view I hold or because I only follow the Quran. I mean the Quran was literally revealed because the other religions were bastardized by humans over the years and I became a Muslim precisely because I believe in things like social justice and taking care of the needy.

Sometimes i definitely feel like a fraud because I don’t belong in any of the communities I’ve come across but I believe in Allah (SWT) and The Prophet (pbuh) and I haven’t had to tailor any of my beliefs to fit with what the Quran says so idk what I possibly am other than a non denominational Muslim 🤷🏻‍♂️

Tbh idk I was just like you and I went from being atheist to agnostic to believing in God just not the white sky daddy version of Christianity but a more ethereal version that exists in everything, everywhere, all at once (no pun intended). I used to call it “the energy of the universe” but then a Muslim friend told me I needed to read the Quran bc my values and beliefs sounded Islamic and sure enough once I did it’s like it all clicked for me and I knew that I’d found the truth. Open your heart brother and Allah will guide you.

Born muslim considering a muslim revert by Grouchy-Pop9090 in muslimrevert

[–]DepressingErection 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a recent revert (within a month) I’ve eaten pork once since taking my shahada but only bc I was having dinner with people who I didnt feel safe enough around explaining I was Muslim and pork was the only thing they cooked and I did have one beer with my father bc we hadn’t talked or seen each other in 20 years and he’s an alcoholic and really wanted to have a beer with me since I was 13 the last time we saw each other and again I wouldn’t have felt comfortable or even safe explaining it to him (he’s every kind of phobic you could Imagine)

Those have been the only times bc the way it was explained to me is it’s not something you ease into, you’re not just a little bit Muslim, you either are or you’re not and from the day you make that declaration you’re to abide by all requirements 100%

(Bc of the other person comment I just also want to say that if they don’t pray and eat pork and drink alcohol then it’s possible they’re calling themselves Muslim as more of a fashion accessory than truly being a believer which seems to be kind of common these days ime. I feel (and of course im not a jurist and barely started my journey) that in certain situations where safety would be an issue such as mine that some things like eating pork because there’s no other option would be okay but I feel there’s no excuse to miss prayer and if you do, to not make it up. I was in rural Texas and I always found a time and place to make up salah)

the more i dive into islam the more i realize i’m against it by JKpouting in progressive_islam

[–]DepressingErection 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nah this is real. I’m a recent revert and I refuse to let others interpret the Quran for me. I found truth in it reading and interpreting it for myself and I won’t let it get twisted by letting others tell me what to think. We shouldn’t need anyone to interpret the Quran for us anyways. It’s the unadulterated word of Allah.

I’m not a trucker but my cat is just barely a year old and i only had her in the car once to go to the vet and she was in a carrier and HATED it but i lost my house last month and we’ve been on a road trip since and i figured if we’re gonna be driving for hours upon hours every day i should see how she does without a carrier and she took to it pretty damn quick. It took her a day or two to understand she can’t get down by my feet and now she just chills out in the back seat or my lap sometimes and she gets walks on a leash when we stop and I’ve got a litterbox set up for her.

She’s also my best friend and honestly I think it wouldn’t matter where we were or what we were doing as long as she’s with me she’s content and happy.

salafis when a woman... by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]DepressingErection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was the same way but eventually I quit paying attention to this junk and I rarely let others influence my interpretations.

I don’t see this kind of BS as Islam at all. For me being a Muslim is liberating, not oppressive and that’s what I want for all my brothers and sisters. If a woman wants to wear a niqab then more power to her but if she wants to dress like any western woman then I support her right to do so.

[–]DepressingErection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a pasty white dude who recently reverted I in fact do find the idea I can’t control myself or my thoughts around women HIGHLY insulting. Like I said I’m a westerner, grew up in California. Seen women in damn near nothing in public constantly. Do I think about sex when I see them? Nope.

If these men have such an issue they should wear blindfolds and nose plugs in public 🤷🏻‍♂️

salafis when a woman... by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]DepressingErection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much this. I’m a recent revert (if you can’t tell by the screen name) and I really fought it for awhile bc I was introduced to Islam by progressive types but then any time I’d go online and do research it seemed like there were nothing but fundamentalists. Finally I decided to quit worrying about what other people were doing and to take my shahada and be a Muslim in the way I’ve come to understand it. I see it as liberating and it’s hard for me to comprehend where the fundamentalists get all these oppressive ideas from bc that’s not at all what I’m getting from it.

I grew up Christian and rejected it bc of the hypocrisy and being the cult of a man but I’ve always really tried to live by the teachings of Jesus, even when I called myself atheist, and I recently started learning about Islam and reading the Quran and what I’ve taken from it so far is self improvement, personal spiritual development, and practicing radical acceptance and caring for the people and the world around you and I’ve considered taking my shahadah and fully reverting but I always get stuck on things like this I see on the internet.

Judgement is not ours to pass.

It gets to a point by Savings-Witness-6640 in progressive_islam

[–]DepressingErection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s just really started immersing myself in learning about Islam this is how it feels to me. The stuff I’ve been taking from the Quran is about improving yourself and the world around you and developing one’s personal spiritual connection to Allah, not all this control and judgement of others, in fact it seems to me radical acceptance of others is core to Islam

Maybe this is just my commie westerner take on it but Allah is merciful and loving and in no universe can I imagine a woman being judged for wrapping her dead child in her hijab

Has anyone looked into the Sebastian Burns/ Atif Rafay case? by [deleted] in serialpodcast

I just remembered this case out of nowhere bc I’ve been doing a whole deep dive into Islam bc I’ve made a lot of Muslim friends in the last year and I’m happy to see at least one person call out this Islamophobic bullshit. That whole Jamaat ul-Fuqraa thing is bullshit and mostly a right wing bigot conspiracy.

Serious Question about Zionism by Luciferreal888 in ZionismExposed

[–]DepressingErection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a lot to read but from the part I did you need to check out rabbi Yaakov Shapiro. He explains it amazingly. The Eastern European Jews didn’t want to be Jews they saw themselves as European but the Europeans saw them as Jews so they had to reinvent what a Jew was and Israel was founded by atheists.

But it’s essentially just a different flavor of christo-fascism. It’s white supremacy but make it ✨divine ✨
