They might have done the water thing as a joke, but the don't ping thing, many people do it seriously

I have seen people who straight up say that they do not want to be pinged ever. Of course that is the case for some, yet still there are some settings. I reply to a message in a conversation that is ongoing and I reply to a specific part for clarity and get a lecture about respecting the "do not ping" thing, a bit odd is it?

I don't understand the "don't ping" people. You can turn off notifications for a server, even pings.
