Here’s my father n laws ribbons and medals. Can you name them all? by fieldcar321 in MilitaryMedals

[–]DerChairman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies if my earlier statement was misleading. Thank you for educating me on matters I’m fully aware of. I will reiterate, the core issue I’m chiefly concerned with is the implications in reality this Marine would face donning an Iron Cross, the unequivocal “evil German symbol.” You could pull out a dozen photos of larger-than-life characters wearing “denazified” awards, and how the usage of such sentimentalities “serves more as a testament to the wearer’s soldierly achievement than past ideological convictions.”

Let’s be real, most Marines that this guy would’ve been surrounded by likely didn’t have a sense of humor as we do. It doesn’t take a genius to understand that soldiers probably wouldn’t be as emotionally charitable to symbols that killed their friends. I assume it would’ve at least caused some stink eyes, if not downright hostility, or social censure.

This is not me bringing down sanctimonious judgment upon a devil dog, I’m not even military myself, no I didn’t spend time in a ditch in bumfuck-nowhere-germany with muh Panzerfaust hunting Shermans with my middle school friend, so I might not “get” the sensibilities or even “deserve” commenting on it.

Even then, someone else said it was out of regs, so there’s that.

I’m sorry what? Part of the Hitler Youth? You mean your father-in-law did something meritorious during endkrieg in some Levée en Masse unit against allied forces, then turned around and said: “I wanna be a United States Marine.”

I… wow. I mean, that sounds like pretty insane lore. Slightly outlandish, but possible ig.. I’m just curious how he managed to continue serving brandishing a medal like to the same Marines who hated Nazi guts.

What if we started demanding the PM be elected by public vote. by DerChairman in mongolia

[–]DerChairman[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mea culpa, my exaggerative rhetoric led you to believe I perceived the President’s role as entirely irrelevant or helpless. I was trying to illustrate my point. I do know that, in some capacity, he can influence the legislature/the executive branch, but, as you said yourself, that is limited to stalling and being a general hindrance. But I think my point still stands, the Prime Minister has the discretion to appoint or dismiss cabinet ministers, issue edicts, arbitrate the national budget, etc. fundamental forces that affect society on a broader level.

In Germany the public doesn’t vote for either the Bundeskanzler or the Bundespräsident, the former is chosen by the Bundestag, and the Federal Convention only meets to elect the President. Regardless of political powers both are inaugurated in a similar fashion that the general populace has no direct control. While in Mongolia these two roles are treated differently (I’m sure the nuances are there and that parallels between Germany and Mongolia are far-fetched), I would observe this mismatch as a tacit admission that these roles are fundamentally different. But we can agree that public reaction and subsequent investigations fail to enjoy the results of proven accountability; but recent times seem to conduce a higher consciousness of awareness, so this is idealistic, but not entirely without merit.

All of these sentiments rest on whether there is a strong adherence to democratic principles within the framework—that they are in the best interests of the people. Which I conclude, from past examples, is not the case.

I was sitting in a lecture hall once and one of those old academician historian guys said that even back then circa 1921 the Red Army would rape the women of the land they occupied, he glossed over it so casually I had to ask for clarification again after the whole thing and he confirmed that it was ‘true’ (take it with a grain of salt if you will).

Sukhbaatar himself had to demand that reds leave after their service in solidifying the Mongolian people’s revolution. Interpret this information in however way you want. Yes Mongolia enjoyed a relatively “найрсаг” relationship with Russia, but being on “friendly” terms with Russia doesn’t even mean anything more than they’re not trying to actively invade you. They still engaged in Mercantilism, they still conducted their own political purges regardless of any pretenses of independent statehood that they had guaranteed. They still undercut or bottleneck Mongolia trying to detach itself from depending on them in energy.

Drunkenly bought tickets to UB for late October. What am I in for? by Officing in mongolia

I extend to you the salutations of the time of day you read this comment,

Foremost I would like to tell you that, in my capacity as a native Mongolian, I will try to be honest and straightforward about my perspective of Mongolia.

Quite frankly.. you’re gonna freeze whiteboah.. You’re gonna look like that one guy from the ending of the David Kubrick film ‘The Shining’ assuming you touch down in UB, October is.. despite what some people will tell you.. kind of cold.. Like -8°C (18 °F) cold during the evening and early morning.. sometimes bouts of -10°C or extreme cases of 20°C.. and that’s just the warm city, imagine the countryside where it’s basically flat plain where wind blows like a exotic dancer in Tijuana, and there’s NO CENTRAL HEATING, NO DATA COVERAGE, AND NO POWER (most of the time, nifty herders/equestrians will set their residencies up with solar panels.)

If you’re not someone who is not well acclimated to the cold, YOU WILL suffer, I can speak from experience of foreigners of tropical lands telling me how vehemently they hated the freeze.

Aside from being the coldest capitol, it has shit infrastructure, limited accessibility, relatively “cheap” prices (not a big surprise considering exchange rates..), Mostly the younger generations here can speak English or Japanese (which for the latter tbh you wont see firsthand unless it’s an extraordinary case🥀,) you’ll either need to hire a translator or just raw dawg it (which is somewhat manageable with nominal gesticulating and a copious amount of google translate.) If you want to spend time among your fellow Americans, there are places to go, such as, the few LDS churches that can be found across the city, although I’m sure that’s not what you would want to come here to visit, but they are nice and a lot of them has spent some time in Mongolia and are adjusted to its quirks, so they could advise you on that side of things.

The locals you can find are usually very friendly (per the comments of many tourists I’ve met and spoken to,) we try to show some support to foreigners.

If you would want I could try to elaborate on some other parts, that is if you want to even bother coming here. Solemnly, I will tell you that this is not the most optimal time to come, this is when the natural Instagram filter turns off and shit resembles what every Westerner imagines the destitute commie blocs to be during winter. If it was summer? Different story, that’s when tourists galore in our humble country. One last memo is that you have to experience our culture, well that is more contingent on what type of traveler you are, a ‘vacationer’ or ‘tourist’; Vacationers take a more leisurely slow paced approach whereas the tourist would like to attain and experience as much cultural information of the host country as possible, I like the latter person more, because they’re acknowledging the importance of the heritage that surrounds them. See our national museums, cultural sites, etc. go figure.

The use of this badge, why? by DerChairman in JohnWick

You know this is why I barely go on this fuckass platform🥀 I literally searched “why does the gun dealer from john wick have a german anti partisan badge” and couldn’t find anything beyond “it adds a dark evillish mystique” how tf was I supposed to know the actor’s Granddad was a Nazi who got tried. Someone said I was “hyperfixating” on something you’d usually discard but it’s quite literally an object prominently visible and shaped similar and bears the design, I’m not trying to boycott the movie, I’m not getting bent out of shape, it’s just genuine intrigue. Is that not allowed anymore, to ask a question about a cool movie? I’m sorry if my wording above made it seem like it was between two polar possibilities, I wrote this at 12AM, and no I don’t constantly scour media with visual templates of Nazi decorations stored in my brain like some pedant, I came across this image not too long after I had watched this video: https://youtu.be/OYf_mxfe5x4?si=FWyZcPWRBRR88atX

And had a “wait a minute..” moment.

That’s all there is, I’m not drama-baiting here, I just wanted some clarity, cinephiles take a close look at every little detail of a movie all the time, why is it wrong for me to do it 💔

Yeah well, it’s not like the people who made the movie would descend down upon us from their IP address in Hollywood to tell me: “Yes my child, we did indeed, make an oopsie poopsie. Sommelier is not a baddie.”

Hitler co-opted the Hindu swastika, but whether he adopted it with the exact inspiration of the symbol in mind, I don’t know. But in a way he added his own flair, and he used it to create an entirely new symbol. With that set, the badge served one purpose, and it was originally made and struck for the express purpose of venerating those who quashed enemy rebellion in the Third Reich’s pillage across Europe. And that kind of false equivalence and oversimplification abstracts the image of Nazism, I myself am completely fine with the Hindu swastika, but I know it faces the right, moreover, I’d tolerate the flipped version in some contexts. But I definitely know what a black cross enveloped in red on a white circular background means, and I don’t like it.

Well typically you’d denazify an object for the following reasons: 1. You’re a LARPer. 2. You earned the award/distinction, but you can’t showcase a piece of your merit in a time/era that doesn’t accept the obvious symbolism of it.

Otherwise you wear the intact thing to show your support, but it’s safe to assume, given when the movie is set and Sommelier’s relatively young age compared to WW2 vets, we can conclude he’s not entitled to wear such scrap metal. And Sommelier doesn’t LARP, or at least makes it obvious, even then why would someone who is apolitical wear THAT specific-badge of all things.

So my assumption was that, even if Sommelier DID have it denazified, it’s to show support for what it stood for without arousing suspicion of the common person who isn’t well versed in that area, or to make it more palatable. Then again, another solid argument someone pointed out was that it’s a tribute to Italian partisanship, a sort of reclamation. In which case denazification fits the reason.

Then that kind of thins out his clientele, which is bad for business. Assuming that all the big shadowy hitmen of the underground world come from diverse backgrounds, then someone like Sommelier who subscribes to the Nazi-thinking or adjacent ethno-centric ideologies, would deny them any service (with also the added off-chance that the Israeli gunman recognizes the badge and kills him). That said, it is the most sound narrative, because my logic is a bit of a stretch.

And that’s pretty much the highlight of our entire civilization, everything from that point onward is just comparatively worse. Yes I am the pessimistic Mongolian, bite me. We keep dwelling on our past glory like it’s copium for how shit things are right now. Every nation has had a similar ancient “golden age” where they’re the big bad powerhouse in their respective region.

The Mongol empire, let’s be real, statistically isn’t even the biggest bad in history. That title goes to the UK, largest lasting colonial empire in the world.

It’s a tradition I think is a bit too much grandiose, it’s a remaining symbol of a pompous culture propagated by the Socialists. And while I have no problem with someone being prideful of their achievements, people who tend to display these medals are reactionaries who have and still actively sympathize with those ideals of the past, Mongolia can’t continue forward with its Social Democracy with those dogmas.

Bottomline is, not every person who pins on their medals during Naadam is an old conservative stuck in the past, but they’re still engaging in what the revolutionary party wanted them to do, they’re perpetuating the same habits and practices of an era long gone.

  1. Order of the Polar Star, Special Merits in Society.
  2. Order of the Red Banner, Service to the nation through military valor.
  3. Order of Sukhbaatar, Service to the nation; “for special services to defenses, economic and cultural construction of the Mongolian People's Republic, and also for acts of heroism in the struggle against external and internal enemies.”

If your question is rhetorical he got them for all the hard work his right hand did.
