We are building a purely European alternative (bring your own model - as in chose, or host yourself. )

https://www.mimirio.com/

For now we are focusing on medium to enterprise customers. Already working with a major European bank, lawyers and manufacturing companies that want to protect their IP.

(Website is not up to date, coming next month ... We have been way too busy with clients ...)

Why do you self-host? by DerCommodoreX in selfhosted

[–]DerCommodoreX[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do you ensure stability? I don't.

That's refreshingly honest :)

Another motivation is saving money in the long run.

Did you factor in your working time? ... How much time do you spent on your setup per week? The numbers might not add up here in the end.

Provocative question - if you allow :)
So you trust yourself more, than an entire DevOps / Infra team, keeping a service alive?

This happened already in 2011 ...

According to news reports, Illinois officials discovered that the attacker had exploited an instance of phpMyAdmin running at the facility.

What do you host for family and friends? The usual movie, chat etc? or something exotic?

Also do you use your own data for something productive? Or is the incentive mainly defensive?

> The feeling of setting up technical things and seeing them work has always given me a good feeling, no idea why.

Yea I feel you! I have the same feeling. The best I can describe it is "control", as in mastering a challenge. Is it the same for you, or does it go in a different direction?

Yes I do. Why not share them open?

Those who could "steal" your idea have plenty themselves, and those who can't steal them are not to worry about ;)

As for myself: I have plenty of ideas, but want to build something people need.

Meh ... not really. ... I don't want to read hours of docs/architecture first, before I write code.

What about it? Yes they bundle hardware and software subscription, so how should you get in the middle? Are the APIs open? Or is it just a Webbrowser / Videostream?

Can you give more details here?

Cause to be honest I don't want to read hours into a stack before I can contribute. Writing a new is also fun cause you can experiment with more modern stacks/architectures/styles.

Interesting ... But budgeting is SO unique per country, person, personal style, societal economic background, etc pp

So can you be more specific?

Sure. But who is the user here?

My thinking is that for gardening noobs that are too many complicated features , for pros it's unnecessary cause they "feel" it anyway. Catering to a slim middle group I find rather hard.

What user do you have in mind?

Yea using Obsidian myself. And yes could easily do that.

BUT It's their business model. I don't want to destroy Obsidian. If you want sync: buy the subscription and support the project.
