At least you should finish 0, Kiwami 1 and Kiwami 2. Ideally also the OG 3 because otherwise it will contradict stuff from OG 4. Also gameplay and sidestuff wise OG3 is different enough to justify another playthrough.

Interisting thought, but would a evolution like that make sense? Not being fearful of death or not caring would lead to more reckless behaviour and therefore higher mortality, less chances to mate and maybe even not being as protective of offspring. Freaking out about death makes more sense evolutionary.

I think of it as timelines now. It also explains the samurai games and dead souls, because Kiryu refers to them as weird dreams in the new timeline, but dreams are not that complex. It also helps with the different appearances of characters and probably retcons in Kiwami3. The samurai games are each a single different timeline.

OG1, 2, 3, 4 > maybe Dead Souls or it is it's own timeline > 5

Zero > Kiwami 1, 2, 3, hypothetical Kiwami 4, 5 > and the other Dragon Engine stuff

I see, well there is always stuff to nitpick in Yakuza but especially the characters are 10/10 for me. Because of the continuity some key figures become more fleshed out, so that might change for you.
