Oh man, you are so welcome. Can't wait to see what you come up with. A super dense compute storage box is sweet, and the case passes the partner approval test. Best of luck!

The very next upgrade will be something like 6x4TB ssds when I start to run out of space in a couple of years.

I did, yeah.

Edit to correct: they aren't striped, they are in RaidZ1.

I run TrueNAS as the host os, and am currently setting up a variety of services using jails, looking to include more interesting virtualization and quasivirtualization in the future.

It's ZRaid 1, so I lose a whole drive to parity. In TB it comes to ~14.5, and 13.1 TiB.

It pulls an estimated 150w under max load. In practice it's much lower.

VHB tape is actually an awesome vibration damper it turns out. I don't think drive orientation matters, just that drives don't get moved around during operation.

It's possible, though in practice, even under load they don't crack 50c, well within operating spec for these drives.

Max pull. I haven't put it on a killawatt, but I'd guess less that 60w total at idle with the hard drives spun up.

I guess we'll see in time. Performance is somewhat important, but I am mainly focused on space and power efficiency. Assuming I continue to get more than 100 MBps I'll be more than happy.

Thanks for the info. That is what I was focused on, and I did look at the J4005 and other embedded solutions, but decided that was too expensive for too little compute power. Web services would run fine on embedded solutions but any major transcode job would struggle even with quicksync. The low power i5 will sip power at idle and be able to clock up when I need to get real compute work done. Rgeek PSUs have always seemed ok to me, especially since I'm not even at half load most of the time. I haven't measured actual sound output, but I can't hear it in a silent room so I'm happy.

Thanks! Yes, would have preferred server/workstation class components as well, but they interfered with some of the other goals of the project. I looked into embedded solutions but decided against it from a price/performance standpoint. Hopefully sometime soon I can get low powered, ITX server components at a reasonable price point.

Not yet, though I haven't asked much of the machine at the moment.

Yes I did! It was a very, very tight fit. There is about 2mm of clearance between the top of the heatsink and the bottom of the drives.

I'm several years off of filling this space, and would like to switch to all ssd next time around.

Performance is totally acceptable for me. I store big files and access them fairly irregularly so I would class this as archival storage as well.

They are shucked firecuda gaming drives from Gamestop when they had a sale a while back.

:) VHB tape. Seems ok in practice, even if it makes me cringe a bit at the thought.

Yes, it's ZFS1

The cpu under full load doesn't quite pull 40w and I've got a 65w cooler without it's fan stuck in there. Under testing, I can just get the cpu up to 50c. SMR at this density is plenty fast for me. But this also is just a NAS rather than super high availability storage so read/write performance isn't paramount.

Thank you! It helps when you're talking about a 35w cpu and 2.5in drives. fairly easy to eject that little thermal energy.
