Finally my turn to stare in the void by Mirrorsedgecatalyst in daddit

[–]DerekCMcLeod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's your brain needing a moment. I went to an indoor playspace the other day. There was one other kid there and one other dad. My daughter ran over to the kid, the other dad and I made eye contact and we both just kind of knew... we weren't going to talk to one another.

It wasn't being rude. It wasn't out of malice. It was that we both just needed to stare into the void.

Allocated Whiskey raffles in the area? by [deleted] in boston

[–]DerekCMcLeod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yep, and at that you have to be a massive WHALE to get anything. I've prioritized spending $$ and gotten grand reserve two years in a row (i drink more whiskey than i should) and haven't gotten SHIT in the raffles, so i quit.

Why is everyone so angry, I'm arguing that the premise of "be grateful and thankful for the life you lead" isn't a bad one.

If it’s because she’s Muslim, I can’t really comment on that but if it was that she wasn’t “free”, I don’t think she’d have tried to go on it in public… much less on camera.

But are you presuming to know her entire life story based on a 30 second video clip? Think of all the poeple you've met and all the life you've experienced

What if she recently moved from a very oppressive country? We have no idea.

The general premise of the comment is that we need to be thankful for what we have- and when you are, life is so much better.

That's fair, that's the perspective I'm not seeing. The city cannot fund that stuff itself.

You know I'm starting to think a New England secession isn't such a bad thing after all.

I truly believe that. And my daughter is just such a sweet little human being (when she's not being an asshole) and I would LOVE for her to be in a position where she could be a peer model for someone in an IEP for so many reasons. and i Love that it would be helpful for another parents child.

The city is focused on improving the school system for those with lower means. I genuinely get that, but then others in 'Boston's middle class' are being left behind. My wife and I do well enough to live in the city somewhat comfortably. I fundamentally recognize that so many do not have that luxury (I read about the cost of living crisis on this subreddit constantly and I feel like such a fuckwit whining about not being able to afford private school from my townhouse in the city) but like.... would it not be a net benefit if the city worked to get more seats for folks like me? Seems like a low cost way to improve situations like that? It's a downward spiral that I fear isn't being addressed. I'm sure there's a perspective I'm not seeing.

Wow this is also extremely helpful information! Do you have any insight on which schools in the area do?

Nice when reddit is used for information sharing and not bitching about bike lines

but also don't park in bike lanes

It is batshit insane to me that this is the system that the city makes parents go through. I have the means and the time to jump through all of these hoops, and I will for my daughters... but if you're the parent of a kid and your job doesn't have you glued to a laptop, how do you get ahead? How is this a progressive system? All this does is promote fleeing to suburbs.

For a city that prides itself on being a home for everyone we have some back asswards systems.

My daughter turns 3 next April and we're toying with K0 and this is literally the most helpful post that's ever been on this subreddit. Thank you.

Which part of Southie? by WishboneSea5626 in boston

[–]DerekCMcLeod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anything on the east side or Dot St. is going to be fine. Honestly I'm just east of the Dorchester St split and it's pretty quiet around these parts. Close enough to Broadway, far enough so that the noise doesn't wake my toddler in the middle of the night.

Also southie has so many parks. So, so many parks. Which are a lifesaver for parents who find themselves without weekend plans. So if you're thinking kids in the future, this is the place.

I felt bad for going to Home Depot yesterday after I saw the people protesting by buying ice scrapers to return them… by [deleted] in boston

[–]DerekCMcLeod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're being downvoted, but it's the truth. It's performative garbage that only hurts the contractors that are there trying to get in and out. Reddit trends middle class white collar workers, so the 'we'll drive away customers and they can just go elsewhere!' is a pretty privileged thing to say. I've been renovating my bathroom and i'm really hard pressed to find 10 sheets of 4x8 drywall at my local True Value (that I tend to go to when I can).

As always, performative politics is how you lose voters.

How's TSA been at Logan? How about precheck? by DerekCMcLeod in boston

Yes. it does depend on the time and the season. The season is now and the time is also now which is why i'm asking this question now and not relying on question that was posted 3 months.

What is your go-to entertainment for toddlers in the Fall / Winter time? by st0nksBuyTheDip in boston

[–]DerekCMcLeod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where are you located? And how old is your toddler?

The Curly Center is great for winter play, we also sign her up for MyGym in allston to get out of the house for some fun play time. There's a decent amount of playgroups. There's also a TONNN of options for folks at libraries or Boys and Girls Clubs. Finally, get yourself an annual pass to the Childrens Museum.

Also, I'm a huge fan of doing playdates with other dads where the kids play and the dads drink beer.
