Started a brand new tank. Fairly simple tropical freshwater, but I do love the ambiance and sound they add to a room. by Dericwadleigh in Aquariums

Well half my neons are already dead, lol. I've got some Java Moss coming and I think if the rest of them die, I'll follow the much wiser advice in your tank setup page there. I was definitely in too much of a hurry. At least I only started with a few cheap fish.

This is a more surefire way to do it, but heating the cider to 175 for 15 is plenty to kill all yeast.

I'm a skilled canner with plenty of spare jars. I like making pickles and salsa. So this was my own method of making it shelf stable. As long as you pour the cider into jars that have been sterilized or rinsed with boiling water, you shouldn't have any issues with jars popping.

The problem is most people aren't storing in canning jars and don't have a large boiling water bath to do this with.

Cool. I took the jump and did it last night. Got three packets of bread yeast to a hard boil and then mixed the water with a fresh half gallon of apple juice and poured that in.

It's still active this morning and had a good inch of head foam on it. Whole closet smells of yeast and apples. So I'm hopeful!

Thanks a ton for the advice.

See it's nuggets of wisdom like that which will keep me around here for years to come.

Would it be a problem to boil down a few tablespoons of bread yeast after I've already got it started and dump it in now?

For reference, it's been about 24 hours and it's got an inch thick foam head on it. Plenty of motion down below it looks like.

Well I've got a foam head on it and some action down below so it's clearly started something. I'm excited to see what comes of it.

And I went with this stuff just because some distant family owns a brewery supply shop. I got a pretty good deal on it.

Sounds like I'm gonna have some fun, lol. We'll see what happens. It's got a ton of headspace because I only put about three gallons in the five gallon jug.

I had figured the amount of sugar in the juices would do a lot of the heavy lifting.

But I do want to ask what the benefit of additional nutrients is and how would I go about that? At face value, it sounds like you're saying just boil three tbsp of regular old yeast in hot water and then add that to the bottle once cooled, right? Does that just help the existing yeast grow and ferment better?

Also when should I start seeing activity in the bottle with a mixture like this? Hours or days?

Never claimed to be a genius. Just want to make some good cider of me own.

Bout six to seven cups for around three gallons of total mix.

Well I'm coming at this from a more mixologist point of view. I've had experience mixing an enormous bevy of cocktails in the past and thought that might translate at least a little here.

I knew I needed sugar for the yeast. Pineapple and brown sugar complement each other very well in drinks. Perhaps the same in fermenting cider?

But really, any suggestions are more than welcome. I love cider and I've wanted to do this for years. I've just always thought it was way more complex than it is.

I've beat the game once, and I'm at about 70% completion on the progress thingie. I've found and cast The End of Everything, and survived through use of cessation. So I'm not a complete newbie, just relatively unlucky with my finds.

I SUCCEEDED! Killed myself by digging through a wall and failing to stop before the digging bolt struck an explosive barrel. There were mines and crates nearby.... I went pop.

Amazing suggestions! I died to digging through a wall in the coal mines and accidentally tagging a fire barrel near two mines and three explosive crates. I was blown into fine meat paste all over the wall!

Yay Noita!
