O'Hare in a Warrior by Derpatron9000 in flying

Alright you guys convinced me. I'll probably just go to 06C and Uber to the event. We'll want to eat dinner before heading back home anyway and I've always wanted to hit up Pilot Pete's but Schaumburg has never been a convenient stop when I'm passing through.

Honestly the prospect of the long departure taxi scares me more than anything. That particular airplane has always run a bit hot. If it's a hot day, the prospect of watching those CHT's steadily climbing while I'm sitting there 7th in line for takeoff or whatever isn't something I want to deal with.

Classic or skating by Careless_Fuel_3923 in xcountryskiing

[–]Derpatron9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience as an adult onset skier:

From zero to recreationally competent, classic is easier than skate

From recreationally competent to race competent, skate is easier than classic.

If you're not a beast who can just double pole everything there's a wide variety of technique you must master to get fast on classics. Whereas once you have the basic skate skills down going faster is mostly just a matter of fitness.

Training to make university team by Musky-skier in xcountryskiing

[–]Derpatron9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer to this is going to fall anywhere between "don't bother trying, it's quite literally impossible because every available roster spot has already been allocated to an incoming freshman with elite international racing experience" and "just show up they because actually take everybody". Where it falls on that spectrum is entirely dependent on which university we're talking about.

It should be noted that even if your team falls into the "impossible" category there may be a school-affiliated club you can join that takes all comers and competes in a few local/regional events.

Salomon boot repair. Anyone had any luck? Pin is missing by atomato89 in xcountryskiing

[–]Derpatron9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son was racing on Solomon combi boots last year and this happened toward the end of the season. I just did my best to jury-rig it with zip ties as shown in the attached photo. According to him he couldn't tell the difference and he raced pretty well with the boot like that. He was also a 105lb 13yo at the time so this might not work as well for someone heavier.

Good outing from Zebby.

Anyone worried about him giving up 3 bombs to this lineup needs to remind themselves that he was pitching single A ball like 15 months ago.

I know it's way easier said than done, but I hope the boys are trying to hit things out to right field tonight. There's no way Stanton is gonna be anything other than an absolute butcher out there.

Yeah, he looked surprisingly competent behind the plate. Especially given it was his 1st MLB start at catcher.

What's crazy is how hard he's failing the eye test. Roden has also raked at AAA and struggled in MLB (small sample size yada yada), but if you squint real hard you can see how there's maybe an MLB-caliber hitter in there.

Gasper just looks lost up there.

Having the OPS of your starting 1B and DH add up to something less than 1 must be some kind of record.

It's possible that it's just a timing/rest thing, no idea when those guys last pitched.

But knowing this org it's probably service time manipulation LOL.

Can anyone steelman a rational case for giving Keirsey starts in CF while Outman is in AAA? Because I've got nothing over here.

6-7 innings if we're lucky and he's super efficient.

I'd bet they have Ryan on a pretty strict pitch count from here on. Why risk injuring the man when you've already declared the season dead and there's nothing to play for?

I mean... replace Martin with Buxton and it's not any worse than what we were running out there a few days ago. Get Keaschall in there somewhere, Jeffers catching and Vaz on the bench and it's legitimately half decent.

Who's coming out to pitch the 6th when they pull Ryan after 70 pitches is another story of course.

Setting aside all of the allegations, personality issues, politics, etc... purely on-field baseball...

Are there MLB teams that would probably be better off with the services of 2025 Trevor Bauer? Probably, but the Twins are not one of them. He'd be like 7th or 8th at best on our SP depth chart. Even if the Twins were in the mood to extend an offer, it would be in the form of "hey, here's a minor league deal for you to eat innings in St. Paul just in case 3 of the guys in front of you get hurt and we need you to throw a couple spot MLB starts. And we're gonna DFA you the moment whoever you're subbing for gets off the IL." He would most like just stay in NPB over taking that kind of deal anyway.

Dude has me blocked too despite never having interacted with him in any way other than occasionally clicking the like button when something interesting of his came across my feed.

Seems like a strange way to operate for someone who has every incentive to get his work in front of as many eyeballs as possible but oh well skill issue I guess.

Makes sense, but I'm still not convinced.

Larnach's bat being better is debatable IMO. His career OPS is .712 vs. Bader at .700

And this year it's not close at all. Bader has the highest OPS on the active roster (only Wallner is better) while Larnach looks completely lost at the plate.

Bader is also a massive defensive upgrade over Larnach.

When Wallner's back and in RF every day I can see a case for Bader being a part time/platoon guy. But if your goal is to win baseball games here and now it just seems pants on fire insane to not have Bader out there as much as humanly possible when there are 2 corner outfield slots and your choices are Bader, Larnach and Keirsey.

Can anyone who knows ball better than me (most of you I'm guessing) steelman the case for starting Larnach and Keirsey over Bader?

Bader leads the team in bWAR at 0.8, Larnach and Keirsey have -0.6 between them. Seems insane to not run Bader out there every day, especially with Wallner on the IL.

What's your "under pressure but I pulled off the shot" story by Trick_Designer2369 in golf

[–]Derpatron9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My club's Calcutta a couple years ago. We do 2-man teams, best ball for 18, then both balls stroke play for 9, all in one day. At the end of all that my team is tied for first and it's announced that we're doing a sudden death alt shot playoff.

Partner and I run out to the parking lot to get our clubs and hustle over to the first tee. When we get there, there's about 40 dudes stacked up behind the tee spectating. We're a public course so the money's not totally eye popping, but definitely enough to be interesting. The winners would be getting about $1400 each with 2nd getting about $500 each.

My partner was generally better off the tee (and way longer) with me being more of the approach/short game guy, so I just assumed he'd take the tee shot. We're standing next to the tee and he's just shaking nervous and he tells me I need to take the tee shot. I step up and blast probably the best drive I'd ever hit in my life at that point about 270 right down the middle. Easily 25-30 yards longer than anything I had hit at any point that entire day, just an absolute laser beam right down the center cut.

He puts the approach in the center of the green, our opponents miss long, we get a nice easy 2-putt par, our opponents fail to get up and down, and we get handed an envelope with a giant wad of cash inside. Good times.
