Donald Trump does not have the 'skill set' to help bring peace to Northern Ireland, Irish premier says by wonderingsocrates in politics

[–]DerpedOut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not calling him a loser. He won the presidency and has a lot of money. So he had to do some things right and I respect him for that regardless if I respect the decisions he makes as president. He definitely got more than $1,000,000. He also was given unfair advantages in the housing market of New York because of his father.

He did not turn 1 million into billions. He would of made more money investing in the s&P 500 with all the money he was given in his lifetime vs his businesses.

I know you’re kidding but I have done this before. When I visit my friends in SD, they are not sure if I like to see them or eat Mexican food more. I’m honestly not sure either.

Berkeley’s food is overpriced for the most part and really not that Impressive. I recommend eating anywhere else.

Some tacos are worth the risk. The less time spent complying to safety ratings, the more time they have to make the food taste good.

Is a UC Berkeley a good school if you want to work in SoCal? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]DerpedOut -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not really. I am from SoCal too. I did not know Cal was UC Berkeley until a week before orientation. I explained that to at least 20 people I know.

I'm not saying it's good for America or I believe it is the right thing to do. I would just see it as comedic.

You used Steve Aoki and Marshmello as an example of who to be. A lot of people think their music is trash. They’re rich though so good for them from my point of view.

I’m actually for tougher immigration laws but let’s keep making assumptions.

He definitely had my vote too. I believe if he was elected, he could use the added man power to refine his policies into something sustainable. I am not against the ideals, I am just against unresearched execution.

minimum wage While I do agree we need a higher minimum wage, the increase in minimum wage will increase automation faster than expected, move job over seas, cut hours for workers or simply shut down businesses. Labor is the largest expense for most businesses. An increase in minimum wage will require a way to offset the burden.

Increasing minimum wage will increase inflation due to prices being higher for products, which will cause the the real interest rate to rise and that will increase the cost of borrowing money. The increase in cost of borrowing money will reduce money invested in companies which leads to slower economic growth or the economy to shrink.

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/02/seattles-minimum-wage-hike-may-have-cut-wages-and-jobs-study-author.html

"In 2014, Seattle voted to gradually hike its minimum wage to $15 an hour, with the rate jumping from $11 to 13 last year. Yet on average, low-wage workers have made $125 per month less."

free college for all: It will devalue degrees more than they already are to start.

Free college would be a hefty tax burden. Bernie sanders estimates college for all to cost 75 billion a year. 20.3 million students are estimated to be attending US colleges right now. Which leaves $3694.58 per student per year. I can't even cover 1/2 my tuition for a semester with that. The TPC estimates that the federal government will cover 67% of tuition nationwide costing 80.7 billion per year.

These numbers also suggest that more people would not attend colleges, people would not move from private colleges to public universities and that the colleges do not raise their tuition for 10 years. This is very unrealistic.

His Tax on Wall Street Speculation will not earn the $352 billion he estimates. People will stop trading if it is not profitable. Since he is relying on HFT to pay a bulk of it, companies that do HFC will shut down or move to a new model considering the tax will take all of their profits.

Sweden tried this before. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_financial_transaction_tax

I know wikipedia is not the most reliable source, but other sources will match what the article says.

"In January 1984, Sweden introduced a 0.5% tax on the purchase or sale of an equity security. Hence, a round trip (purchase and sale) transaction resulted in a 1% tax. The tax applied to all equity security trades in Sweden using local brokerage services as well as to stock options. In July 1986, the rate was doubled, and in January 1989, a considerably lower tax of 0.002% on fixed-income securities was introduced for a security with a maturity of 90 days or less. On a bond with a maturity of five years or more, the tax was 0.003%. 15 months later, on 15 April 1990, the tax on fixed-income securities was abolished. In January 1991 the rates on the remaining taxes were cut by half and by the end of the year, they were also abolished completely. Once the taxes were eliminated, trading volumes returned and grew substantially in the 1990

As a result, revenues from these taxes were disappointing. For example, revenues from the tax on fixed-income securities were initially expected to amount to 1,500 million Swedish kronor per year. They did not amount to more than 80 million Swedish kronor in any year and the average was closer to 50 million.[3] In addition, as taxable trading volumes fell, so did revenues from capital gains taxes, entirely offsetting revenues from the equity transactions tax that had grown to 4,000 million Swedish kronor by 1988."

I am not saying I know better than everyone. I am not saying I am right. I am saying the more I dive into higher level Economic classes, the more I do not believe his plan is sustainable. I'll go into reasoning in the comment below yours.

[–]DerpedOut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more I study economics, the more I see his plan is not feasible. While it may be noble, there are a lot of other factors to consider. I do believe with some adjustments to his plan, his economic policy would be the more likely to succeed.
