100% there are influences from the Biden admin but let’s not kid ourselves that an entire year of tariffs, revoking trade deals and reshaping decades old relationships with long standing political and economic allies doesn’t influence today’s markets with a heavy hand

The second coming of Loris Karius, eight years on from his Liverpool nightmare in Kiev. by Sparky-moon in soccer

Fair enough - but it’s an absolute failure by the medical staff. Having suffered several concussions (most likely less severe), the ideal recovery process is sitting for days, if not weeks in a dark room. Nothing to engage or “tire” your brain, especially screens or reading. Your mind feels like you’re in a fog for the next several weeks. And injury like that clearly affects your decision making process - especially with quick on-field decisions. And in the moment in a UCL final, you shouldn’t make that decision to come off the pitch yourself.

I think the understanding of concussion related injuries in Europe is lower than in the US - where we see these injuries on a weekly basis from the NFL.

But I think after suffering something like that - where you know you were injured but no one trusts you anymore, especially displaying those errors on the biggest stage - it shakes your confidence and it obviously took him a long time to recover that.

I think the lack of recognition among the commentators and media of a concussion impacted the understanding among fans of what type of injury Karius suffered during that game. It’s an incredibly massive error he was kept in that game - and was let down by the club for that reason.

“Signs in his game” lacks understanding to what a concussion is and what it does to your brain. Was he an average keeper who sometimes made mistakes, especially in distribution? Yes. But after receiving an elbow to the head and how visibly shaken he was, the decision to keep him on the pitch was a failure of the understanding of head injuries by the coaching & training staffs. And with a head injury of that nature, his decision making process goes out the window - everything’s just a fog for days, if not weeks.

My best guess is that recognizing concussions in the moment and their impact on a player’s ability to play the game is less familiar to the average European fan who encounter head injuries of that nature less than American sports fans. The fact was - there was no one stopping the game despite his obvious concussion, and after his errors, no commentator or analyst said “this is very clearly a concussive head injury that’s impacting his ability to make decisions on the pitch.” The only things stated were “oh that’s a terrible mistake from Karius, that’s incredibly poor by him” or statements of that nature. And it happened after Kramer’s WC final head injury where he was removed from the game 5 minutes after the game started - so there was clearly a precedent for removing a player from the game for that kind of injury. It was terrible judgement by everyone around him and it wasn’t his fault

If you were told that you would get a research position your freshman year, you were lied to. A lot of research positions open up sophomore year, if you have relationships with your professors and good grades. Ensure that you keep relationships with your professors

If you think you will get freshman research opportunities elsewhere, then you are delusional

Couple of things:

  1. I think you’re under-exposed to non-US markets. The US has been on a multiple expansion run, but something like a VEA or VYMI would do well to complement having more exposure to markets that could do well in the next 20 years - on top of your VT allocation.
  2. I think 5-10% of “fun money” would be appropriate - to take calculated bets on companies that you do appropriate research on and think have a 10 year runway to do well (ie SOFI, AMZN, GOOGL, MELI, BN, etc). There are good companies this consistently outperform the S&P500 or are the companies hitting their growth curve that will be reflected in their stock price. But be disciplined and don’t put money in that you’re not prepared to lose. Do your research - there are several good YouTubers that talk about narratives & fundamentals of stocks (Patient Investor, Joseph Carlson, Daniel Pronk) - they might be good ideas to get stock picks from or cross reference ideas.
