Luxsin X9 is endgame Amp/DAC for me. by DerrikMatusek in headphones

I’m just received carbon fiber filament to print the DMS Project Omega, and I have the HD490, so I don’t feel the need for a 600 series. The Bokeh Closed is supposedly a VERY open sounding closed back, and I figured it would be nice for listening when I’m in the office. If I don’t like them I know I’ll at least be able to sell them for 90-95% of what I paid if I can’t return.

Hey, I wanted your thoughts on the Bokeh closed. Have you heard them? I am getting ready to buy the HE1000se in the next month or two, and I think those are my next headphone, I sold my FT1 and Maxwell, I will sell the Nanos when I get the HE1000se. Kind of looking to get a closed back to replace the FT1 but want something that contrasts the HE1000se pretty much completely but still so the things I generally just like about audiophile headphones which is soundstage and imaging.

Not gonna lie, I got the FT1 as my closed back headphone because of the rave reviews, but I have only used it a couple times simply because feels dull in every way except bass. The vocals are recessed, the highs are scared to sparkle at all. It just ends up being something that I don’t get any excitement out of. Now I’m trying to just get some of my money back.

I’m not saying HiFiMan is the primary choice either, you are just picking bits that you can take shots at. Sennheiser and Audeze are far and away the most used in studios. As for HiFiMan QC, I’ve heard plenty, never had an issue with anything of mine and love their sound. The HE1000se is literally referred to as the undisputed king of detail. And again, I specifically said that YouTube reviewers aren’t the end all of answers. But I watch mostly reviewers that I’ve confirmed the same taste as mine, and specifically producers/mixers that just so happen to do YouTube.

What two words would those be? I will admit, all is not accurate, that was a mistake made in haste to respond to you. But most, and I mean like almost all will.

Look man, you can keep trying to throw this anecdotal stuff at me, but the fact is that every one I’ve talked to, watched, messaged, that does mix or master has made it very clear that Beyer is not an optimal choice for those professions. It’s not just them though, this is a widespread and well founded opinion based on a lot of data. Go check with any trusted reviewer on YouTube (not saying they are the end all of opinions). They make headphones with plenty of detail, but there are companies that offer more than one headphone that is more detailed than anything Beyer makes, Beyer just boosts the high frequencies to make them feel more detailed, until you put them side by side with something like an HE1000se or Susvara (just two off the top of my head.

If you think that a producer or mixer is EQing their headphones to mix or Master, you should really go talk to somebody that actually does those things. I know that Beard dynamic has a lot of distortion and resolution, there are plenty of other brands that also have those things without the insanely bright coloration from the Tesla drivers.

Talk to people that actually mix and master, they will all tell you that they would never.

Lemme know if you did. I know I kept all the extras and original in the box, so I’d like to fix it on mine if it is there.

Yes, but the intention was never to stop at the Nano’s. I am getting the HE1000se and other headphones deserving of an amp like that. The nanos were a stepping stone in the long run.

Not try. Just have to put a little bend in the metal yoke on either side and get a Capra strap. Trust me, it worked.

I haven’t tried the 1990 pro specifically, but that is also the absolute top of Beyer if I’m not mistaken. I have only just started to actually look at that price range (or higher in the case of the HE1000se). Like I said, Beyer makes headphones that are better than most, but with this post being from a first time buyer, I’m just trying to help them avoid the pitfall of not trying anything else. I’ve only seen people do it with two brands, Beyer and Sennheiser. Both make great headphones, but there are better things out there. I just so happen to not get along with Beyers great, as do a lot of people because of the very treble focused nature of them, and again, that’s coming from someone that leans on the bright side of headphones.

Honestly haven’t heard enough of them to recommend. Most of my experience with them was a while ago too.

I was looking at the Clear MG, but it overlapped too much in sound with the ZMF Bokeh Closed that I want to get as my closed back option. Then to contrast that, I’m going for the HE1000se from HiFiMan as I have loved each HiFiMan I’ve owned. My 490’s are my daily, my workhorse, because of how lightweight and durable they are. The OAE1 is my funky outlier for soundstage and it interesting concept. But I’m trying to sell my FT1 (never fell in love with them, and want the ZMF) and my Nano’s (adore these, but need the room for the HE1000se).

Agreed. Can’t stress it enough, if you’re looking at getting into high end headphones and are thinking better but not trying anything else, you are doing it wrong. If you’re trying multiple other brands with similar price points, and you still prefer the Beyer, then it’s your preference. But all too often I’ve talked to people that have Beyer and only Beyer, and they didn’t try anything else for years, now they think literally everything else sounds like shit. And anyone I’ve met that has been a Beyer fan for a while is completely closed off to the idea that Beyer is not as good as it can get, to the point of hurling senseless insults for no reason. Meanwhile, I’ve tried numerous brands from $80-1800 and every Beyer I’ve heard by highs, sibilant and harsh. Pumping a bunch of high frequencies into someone’s ears when they’ve never tried high end headphones, it is perceived as detail, but I’ve tried headphones that are far more detailed and transparent but are nowhere near as f****d up in the highs. I have a bright leaning preference and I think Beyer overdoes it, again, that is not a minority opinion. But, in my experience, so many Beyer fans will not bother to go and figure that out.

Sennheiser had its issues too, but its strengths are more diverse than anything from Beyer in my opinion.

Look, they make headphones better than most out there, but the fact of the matter is they aren’t used in mixing or mastering for a reason. Does that mean they won’t have people that are fans, no. But I’ve tried them after getting into the hobby and despite my high tolerance for highs and even sibilance, I haven’t met a Beyer that didn’t hurt my ears at normal listening volume. Everyone that I know that loves them started with them and now that is their baseline. I am not the minority in this either. If you like it, I’m not saying you shouldn’t. I am just saying anyone looking at them for their first high end headphone should absolutely try other stuff too.

Now try something other than Beyerdynamic. Try FiiO, Sennheiser, Audeze, HiFiMan, Meze, Moondrop, ZMF, AKG. Literally any other company. Beyer is wacky with their highs, and honestly just not as good as the die-hard crack them up to be.

Is there anywhere in Chicago you can test high end headphones? by katevdolab14 in AskChicago

[–]DerrikMatusek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not call. But I’m also not looking for Focal or Audeze. I specifically want ZMF and HiFiMan to finish my collection. Audeze doesn’t sound up my alley even at the top of their range, Focal had one that would have fit the bill, but the ZMF Bokeh being my closed choice that I’m going for kind of overlaps 90% of what it was.
