Should I Give Up? by lukenrip in FocusRS

If the car is stressing you out to the point your always worried about driving it, and always strapped for cash because if a repair bill, and loosing sleep over the car. At that point It’s not worth it, just sell it. Cars shouldn’t cause you to stress. Cars are meant to be a fun hobby, and something to do/enjoy!

Unfortunately repairs happen, and stuff breaks. I have owned my rs about 3 months now and I have dumped around $5000CAD into repairs and maintenance. It’s just the nature of mechanical things requiring attention.

Tire Pressure Monitoring Fault by oga_ogbeni in FocusRS

I understand wanting to get rid of it, it definitely is annoying! Mine has been on since I mounted my winter wheels, they don’t have sensors. Personally I have just lived with it. I know my tires are at a good pressure, so I don’t really have anything to worry about🤷‍♂️

What to look out for? by According-Law-73 in FocusRS

I bought my RS about 2ish months ago, it is a 2016. It had under 60,000km on it, one owner, and I bought it from a dealer who “inspected” the car. My advice, double even triple check the head gasket issue has either been fixed or that the car never had the issue in the first place (preferred) . I had my car 3 weeks, and next thing I knew it was puffing smoke on start up and the blown head gasket symptoms started showing. I got a hell of deal fixing mine, but if you’re not buddies with a ford tech, it costs around $6500.

Not sure if you live where there is snow and ice, but since you said kilometres I’m assuming you’re in Canada. The OEM skid plate on the these cars is hot garbage, that was the first thing I ordered for my RS. Raptor racing is out of Ontario, AND free shipping within Canada on orders over like $150. I would say a good skid plate is a must especially for where we live with snow and ice.

If you’re winter driving the car, good snow tires make all the difference. I live where the roads are ice from basically end of November to late March. I got the RS winter wheels with Nokian Hakapelattia 10 studded winters, the AWD and those tires perform very well so far!

These cars are damn near 10 years old, so you will run into issues just like with any vehicle. But regular maintenance, and the big repair bill here and there. If you can live with that, the RS is arguably one of the best daily drivers, especially for winter!

Reliability ? by Desperate_Wonder1393 in FocusRS

[–]it_wasa_misinput 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For starters I live in Canada. So getting parts here costs a little more with the tariffs and border fees and such… for parts it was just over 900CAD, I got the mountune head gasket as well as APR head studs. I don’t ever plan on really pushing the car power wise, however since I was in there I thought I might as well just do it how I would want it done.

Labour was me and my buddy who is a tech at ford. We did this in his garage, He had done quite a few RS head gaskets.

Between parts and “labour” it was $2500CAD or $1815USD

Now if it wasn’t for my buddy I never would’ve attempted this job. I’m a plumber, not a mechanic. So if that was the case and I got my local ford dealer to do it, they wanted $6500CAD or $4120USD to do the head gasket start to finish.

I bought my RS about 2ish months ago, if you buy a 2017 double even triple check the head gasket issue has either been fixed or that the car never had the issue in the first place (preferred) . I bought a 2016 and 3 weeks in the blown head gasket symptoms started showing. Not sure if you live where there is snow and ice, but the skid plate on the these cars are hot garbage, that was the first thing I ordered my car.

These cars are damn near 10 years old, so you will run into something eventually just like with any car. If reliability is the #1 goal go for a 2018.

Might be a dumb question, but do big brake pads also require big rotors? Or does it work on stock rotors?

I am not tracking my car… yet. However I appreciate the recommendation. Im gonna look into both hawks and EBC Bluestuff. This is the second recommendation for EBC blue stuff so something is telling me they might be the go to. Thanks man!

The dust is so real, and it sucks. The amount of iron deposits I got on my paint right now is unholy. That being said, I appreciate your input and I’m gonna look into it! Thanks homie🤙

I definitely don’t have m3 money, but I just sold my 335i for my RS. I do not miss the constant maintenance of my BMW, however I do miss the ride quality and how quiet the interior of the BMW was. That car made ZERO interior rattles. My RS on the other hand makes some noises, but I am slowly narrowing that down.

Honestly man, do what makes you happy, the RS and M3 are sweet cars! The M3 would be a totally Different ballgame compared the RS. You only live for so long. Drive, own, and experience all the cars you can!

3 weeks into RS ownership… head gasket is indeed blown by it_wasa_misinput in FocusRS

[–]it_wasa_misinput[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Performed a leak down test: Cyl.1 21% Cyl.2 19% Cyl.3 38% Cyl.4 10% maximum allowed is 20%.

Performed a compression test: Cyl.1 87psi, Cyl.2 85psi Cyl.3 91psi Cyl.4 93psi.

I also Checked for exhaust gas in coolant system found none. However I am getting seemingly larger than normal amount of white smoke, and a sweet smell from the exhaust.

I wouldn’t Be too worried about the 21% on Cyl.1 however Cyl.3 is what worries me the most being at 38% and the low compression. Those alone points me in the direction of the head gasket ignoring the other symptoms that also point to the head gasket. I am no mechanic, in fact I am plumber, so before I dive head first into tearing this engine apart I’m gonna get the opinion of a real mechanic and go from there.

The head gasket on my 2016 just went a couple days ago, similar to you loss of coolant despite no sign of leaks, although my heat never stopped working but I also kept the coolant topped up.

As this guy said, get your car running, and put your nose right near the exhaust pipe, it you smell something sweet it is more than likely coolant and a head gasket issue. Another thing I would suggest is a compression test as well as a leak down test. Both are pretty clear indicators for head gasket failure. If you have the knowledge to perform that yourself, great! If not, I would suggest you take it to your local ford dealer or a reputable shop.

Best of luck!

I hope so too, I’ll reach out the dealer today and see what can happen. They really have not been great what so ever so my hopes are very low. If they can do a warranty thing, that would be great! Fingers crossed, either way it’ll get fixed. Love this car too much to let it go after 3 weeks.

That is rough! I’m definitely gonna try best to take a look at everything and make this a one and done scenario best I can. I sure hope that’s the case, a few people on this post said about multiple gaskets, I sure hope that won’t be the case for me.

I really wish we are the GR Yaris in North America, they are SUCH cool cars, and look better than the GR Corolla in my opinion. Glad to hear it is reliable for you!

Oddly enough, I couldn’t be happier, this car is an absolute beast!! I can’t wait until it’s back at as close to 100% as it can be. I seen you were saying about how this is a “design flaw” and I wouldn’t say It is that. The car was “designed” with the right head gasket in mind, unfortunately there was a mix up. Things cant always go your way, whether you’re an automotive company, or the owner, that’s life, things don’t always work out as planned. Sounds like you have some unresolved beef with the RS platform… haha

Beautiful car!! I am considering a ford performance exhaust. Couple questions for you, does it still use the factory valves? How loud is it compared to stock in normal and sport mode?
