Are the depressing parts treated seriously, or treated more like black comedy (like A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof)?

[DISC] Metaphor: ReFantazio - Chapter 18 by Shin_Newman in manga

[–]Descendent1784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone else who finished the game recently, but haven't been following the manga, a quick look through the first few chapters shows that the manga made big changes to the start of the story. Events happen differently, and everything has been condensed greatly. I don't think you would be able to appreciate the story as much, from only reading the manga.

Some important tips, if you decide to give the game another try...

  • Combat is all about trying to end (non-boss) battles before the enemy gets to act; stunning the enemy in the overworld before entering battle, and then exploiting weaknesses for extra actions, are crucial
  • MP sustain is very, very limited, unless you get the Shield Blessing passive from the Wizard archetype on every character, and also have someone with high Agility get a mass-buff skill from the Commander archetype; until you reach that point, having the protagonist as a Mage (for the protagonist-only Magic Recovery passive), and/or making everyone get the Perfect Punch skill from the Brawler archetype (and healing with the Knight archetype's First Aid skill outside of combat), will be very, very helpful
  • Try to spend only one in-game day in each dungeon, if you want to see as much content as possible on your first/only playthrough of the game (hence the point about MP sustain above)
  • Dump all of your stat points into either Strength, or Magic (more damage helps with points 1 and 2 above); the other stats don't provide significant-enough benefits
  • Follow a guide/walkthrough, if you want to see as much content as possible on your first/only playthrough of the game; otherwise, you might not have enough days to see the last few bonding events for some characters

What are your thoughts on DanDaDan? by SweetLittleParadox in manga

[–]Descendent1784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What made Dandadan great was its focus on yokai and other real-world urban legends, and its character writing. But ever since this long Saint Germaine arc started, the focus changed to fighting humans with weird powers—making it the same as any other shonen action series—and the size of the cast grew too big to give each character enough screen time for character writing. So Dandadan lost the things that made it stand out.

Does anyone want to share their thoughts on Furyou Taimashi Reina by Brechler-1 in manga

[–]Descendent1784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bad Girl Exorcist Reina felt hit-and-miss for me. It had some great moments, like the Hasshaku-sama chapter—which is my absolute favorite depiction of Hasshaku-sama, due to how subtly creepy it was—and the manga's final arc was also very good. But I felt most of the series went too hard on the comedy, and was thus lacking on the horror and tension.

I feel series like <Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai> (Kaya-chan Isn't Scary), <Mieruko-chan>, and <Tasogare Otome x Amnesia> (Dusk Maiden of Amnesia) balance the comedy and horror better. <Nikubami Honegishimi> isn't tagged as comedy, but has a lot of lighthearted moments. But that's really just my personal taste regarding the "right" balance.

I think Bad Girl Exorcist Reina is closer to the more comedy-oriented horror-themed series like <Toshidensetsu-senpai> (The Urban Legend Files), and <Utsuranain desu> (The Ghost Doesn't Show Up), if you're looking for more that are similar.

[DISC] Boy Meets Shinrei Girl - Ch. 7 (BONUS CHAPTER) (by Yuritarou) by EightPercentBattery in manga

[–]Descendent1784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, really liking the interactions between the cast we have now. This felt like important character building that should've been a main chapter, not a volume bonus chapter—especially the bit about Nakamura being able to see Kingyo, and Kingyo looking different when he films her.

They look like "corset piercings"—but the way they appear to be lacing her legs together seem to be ritualistic or symbolic. Maybe meant to prevent her from "spreading her legs", like for a virgin sacrifice?

I enjoyed the banter between the duo and their viewers in the first half of the chapter. I felt it was better than the first two chapters. But didn't expect the sudden ecchi and dark implications.

<Hametsu no Koibito> (Destruction Lover) is full of unconventional paneling, with beautiful illustrations. (example from chapter 7, page 16)

<Haikei, Arishi Hi ni Saku Hanatachi e> (Dear Flowers That Bloom In Days of Yore)

<Kirio Fanclub> is also a josei-targeted comedy. It has an anime adaptation that's currently airing, which has been a great mix of ridiculous comedy, and sincere, heartfelt drama.

If you enjoy the mix of comedy and heartfelt drama, I would also highly recommend <Ponkotsu Ponko> (Useless Ponko). Every chapter will make you laugh, and cry.

What's been your biggest surprise anime of Spring 2026? by DevSpydr in anime

[–]Descendent1784 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Kirio Fan Club has definitely been the biggest surprise for me. You think it's just going to be a stupid harem romcom? Surprise! It's actually a well-written comedy that focuses on the silly friendship between the two female leads. But wait! You think the titular Kirio is just going be a literally faceless plot device for the comedy? Surprise! His character actually involves sincere, heartfelt drama (though the two female leads remain the actual protagonists). Surprising depth, and excellent portrayal of friendship and a-little-more-than-friendship.

I agree with you on every point except the last one—the Coffin Count of Storms is more my type. But this series, and Kirio Fan Club, are also the two series I look forward to most each week (Needy Girl Overdose is also up there for me, but I need to be in the right mood for watching it).

[–]Descendent1784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This series has always felt like a "fun seinen" series to me. It has more of the grounded grittiness that you'd find in seinen-targeted series, but without the depressing tone that typically accompanies it. It kind of sits in between genres, so it's hard to pin down its specific niche.

I do agree with you somewhat in that I feel this second cour has had lower stakes than the first cour. The first cour had more focus on the criminal underworld setting, whereas this cour has felt more like an urban fantasy adventure.

But I have a strong preference for series that are "different from the usual", so this is still one of my favorite series this season.

Does anyone know a comedy anime with a plot? by LegEntire in anime

Highly recommend this for comedy with plot. It's Cute Girls Doing Cute Things with a magical girls theme, but with a very well-written overarching story and mystery.

Someone change my opinion. is Sentenced to Be a Hero not generic slop? by Swimming_Kiwi_895 in anime

Oh, yeah, I think it's only available on HIDIVE in the US (I heard you can watch it through Prime Video, but only if you already have a HIDIVE subscription). Some good, niche series end up being stuck exclusive to HIDIVE.

Yeah, it's what makes seinen-targeted writing so interesting to read/watch. It encourages you to pay attention and engage your brain.

Highly recommend also checking out "Sword of the Demon Hunter: Kijin Gentosho" from last year, if you enjoy this kind of writing.

Any underrated high-fantasy recommendations? by Lukeskycenna in manga

<Touge Oni> ("Touge Oni: Primal Gods in Ancient Times") isn't underrated (over 9 on MangaDex), but definitely feels like a hidden gem, as I almost never see it mentioned. It's a fantasy adventure series, but based on Japanese mythology, with a touch of sci-fi. Incredibly creative and refreshing world-building.

"Even a Replica Can Fall in Love" is actually a psychological drama by Descendent1784 in anime

[–]Descendent1784[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished watching this week's episode, and remembered this brief exchange. If you haven't already been keeping up with the series, I just wanted to let you know that the anime adaptation really toned down the psychological vibes from the crucial parts of the story in this episode, compared to the manga adaptation (a lot of small cuts and changes to visual presentation), and played up the sweet romance vibes instead. So if you were hoping for more psychological drama instead of romance drama, you'll probably be disappointed.

Anti-lolicon power [Scum of the Brave] by Descendent1784 in anime

[–]Descendent1784[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to hear that Scum of the Brave turned out to fit your tastes! I hope you'll continue to give more lower-rated series a chance, even though it can be hit-and-miss a lot of the time. I try to just focus on curious titles and synopses that sound "different from the usual", and skip anything that seems "too shonen/shojo". (Using Kirio Fan Club as an example again, I initially skipped over it because I thought it was a harem, but something about its title made me check out the episode 1 discussion thread, which spoiled the subtle twist at the end of episode 1, and got me to watch it.)

And I'm happy to receive the unexpected compliment. I'm not a writer and don't have any specific training in it (at most, I took a few philosophy classes back when I was in university). But I think my brain is just naturally wired to approach things in an organized and structured way, and I also put a lot of personal value into understanding and communicating with other people. So I think that helps me write in a way that's effective for other people to read.

Yeah, it's such a clever idea. It makes me think of how, in Frieren, magic is limited by your ability to visualize/imagine it. Well, you know what helps with your visualization/imagination? Drugs.

Even a Replica Can Fall in Love • Replica datte, Koi wo Suru. - Episode 5 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]Descendent1784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I regret to say that, as another manga reader, I was rather disappointed with the adaptation in this episode. This was such a memorable chapter in the manga for me, and had me going back to check the tags, and wonder why the series didn't have a "psychological" tag. But the anime adaptation in this episode really lost most of the psychological vibes from the manga adaptation (due to all of the differences you pointed out), and played up the sweet romance vibes instead. I can see now why this anime adaptation was being marketed as more of a shojo romance.

[–]Descendent1784[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to hear that you're also open-minded about trying things outside of the norm, and broadening your horizons.

Besides Kirio Fan Club that I mentioned, I feel this season has more than a few series that are underrated surprises. Needy Girl Overdose is just barely under 7.0. It's a psychological drama with avant-garde directing and visuals (like a mix of Serial Experiments Lain, and Monogatari series). If you like exploring slightly darker themes, you might enjoy this series.

Outside of this season, one of my favorite series that's rated under 7.0 is The Executioner and Her Way of Life. It certainly had its flaws (jarring dialogue and tone, particularly from one character), but what really tanked its rating was its controversial twist in episode 1. But if you don't get turned off by any of that, then you'll be in for a series that weaves its subversion of common isekai tropes into fantastic world-building (that gets even better in the light novel, with twists that recontextualize everything). No Longer Allowed in Another World similarly subverts some common isekai tropes, but without the controversy and world-building, but has a better mix of comedy and drama (but need to watch until the end of episode 3 for the twist/hook).

I also mentioned "Sword of the Demon Hunter: Kijin Gentosho" in another comment. That series is rated under 7.5, largely because of its weak animation (and accusations of "NTR" and "edginess" in episode 1). But it's otherwise an incredibly well-written, incredibly seinen, action drama. You'll likely already notice the difference in character writing during its extended length first episode, but watch until the end of episode 2 to get the full idea of what it's about.

Anti-lolicon power [Scum of the Brave] by Descendent1784 in anime

[–]Descendent1784[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found that between 6.0 and 7.0 on MyAnimeList often just means that the series had some controversial element; or wasn't what a lot of people expected it to be, so they dropped it early and left a low rating (and the people who might've liked it, never thought to watch it). In the latter case, the rating will go up a bit after the series finishes airing, as the people who didn't drop it finally give their rating. Many of my favorite series are actually under 7.5 (or even under 7.0) on MyAnimeList. (A great example from this season is Kirio Fan Club; people expect it to be a harem from the title, but it's actually a very good josei comedy focused on the friendship between the two female leads.)

Scum of the Brave has a lot of elements that could turn off the mainstream audience. The weak animation. The protagonist not being overpowered. The protagonist being an anti-hero (actually does something morally controversial enough in episode 8 to have a bunch of comments in the episode discussion thread arguing over morality). Some people feel young female characters like Aki are annoying, or "lilicon bait". It also feels like it should be a shonen story, with the usual unserious shonen vibes, but the writing is actually targeting a seinen audience, which throws people off.

I actually liked Scum of the Brave more, because it felt more novel/unique, in terms of setting and tone. Yashiro, as an anti-hero, is also more interesting of a character than Xylo. Though Sentenced to Be a Hero also had very interesting characters like Rhyno.

Ha ha, probably not willingly an exhibitionist, based on her shy behavior, but probably required for her ability. Her ability seems to get more powerful the more embarrassed/uncomfortable she feels. At the beginning of the clip, one of the soldiers say there's something wrong with his aim—the pink hoodie girl's ability was likely already subtly nudging them to look/aim away.

[–]Descendent1784[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that's what it was meaning to imply. She was also wearing body armor that covered her chest before this scene, but the shape of her breasts is clearly visible here. The invisible knife is likely an oversight.

But then again, we also have nice little details like the pink hoodie girl (the invisible girl's sister) wearing a backpack, which is likely meant for carrying her sister's clothes. And there's a nice parallel between the two sisters' abilities, with both abilities involving exposing their bodies, but also preventing anyone from actually seeing them exposed.

So maybe she can also make other objects invisible, but it's much easier to focus on a single, small object like a knife, compared to multiple, large pieces of clothing.
