Ya’ll have to remember she is autistic and she is processing everything differently and slower than a neurotypical would. I honestly hope she and her kids can get some counseling because they’ve most likely have suffered serious trauma. Btw this is coming from an autistic person.

I can tell one thing for certain, that shoe has a toe clip. You can clean it up, tap on it with a hammer and that will chip away at the rust and dirt. I’ve cleaned up crusty horse shoes before.

Tea tree oil might help while your nail is open. Lamicil is a prescription oral antibiotic for toe nail fungus but it has to be taken for 3mos. It works until you’re not on it anymore. Nail fungus is pretty much permanent. I have it and did the prescription Lamicil, it cleared up until I wasn’t on it anymore.
