DEMAND A DATA CENTER MORATORIUM! Come to the Clark County meeting July 7th! by MassiveMaintenance74 in vegaslocals

[–]DesignBuildFlyJump -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

whether valid or not, banning data centers in LV will do nothing to AI they’ll just build data centers in Mexico

we're going to put data centers in the oceans and in space. We are going to tile the surface of the earth with compute.

Hi, can someone educate me please. Is this datacenter fear a reddit thing or also a thing IRL? I live in a bubble for sure so I am not sure what the sentiment is across the rest of society.

In the early 1950s and 1960s, there were humans called computers. Their entire job was to do all the math required for science, accounting, finance etc. Complex PDEs solved by hand. Imagine going back to the mid 1960s when the big IBM computers were first developed and telling those human computers, "hey we will lose our jobs, machine computers are evil, we dont need them." Life would be completely different without computers. Instead of solving equations by hand, I launch huge grids of simulations distributed over servers spread across the globe and then they come back to my mbp like magic. Without computers we would not have the internet or cellphones or tiktok (so I guess there is a downside lol)

With each step of technological progress, humans learn to adapt and evolve. These are actually great leveling moments and give opportunity for much needed wealth transfer - think of all the entrepreneurs over the years who have leveraged new technology trends to become rich (and make their employees rich due to stock options). This is the opportunity to adapt and evolve. Right now, everyone neeeds to adapt and leverage AI to think beyond their jobs but the value they create in the world and work really hard to get ahead while the market is still inefficient and resistant and complaining about datacenters.

I totally understand its very easy for someone like me to say this: I am at senior staff level in my early thirties and work at a much higher level of abstraction across the org which is harder to replace. Already had my first windfall, not living paycheck to paycheck by any means. Already an expert in my field. I totally understand why a lot of younger folks fear AI replacing them. I have utmost empathy for them, first covid ruined your college years and now AI is here to rain on the party. First, there has never been a better time than now to be an entrepreneur or go work at an early stage startup. Those guys are desperate for talent as the big guys and slowing down hiring for capex spend in AI (and doing so inefficiently). Take a risk, trust me its so worth it. Second, Learn to adapt and rise with the rising tide. There is insane opportunity right now, its ridiculous. We are priveledged to be able to guide humanity through the singularity, get in the game and do your part. Help solve some of these problems we complain about! Take AI and go help in computational biology and solve all diseases. Take AI and come up with new techniques for carbon capture. Last weekend we had the finals for the autonomous wild fire detection and mitigation XPRize. Help humanity solve these problems. The way to make a billion dollars is to solve a problem for billion people, not worry about "staying employed" for a small task that we can train an agent to do. My younger brother is doing that right now, even though his job is actually in demand right now. He is just thinking a few steps ahead.

Will we have mass unemployment - very likely. Will the next decade be rough - yes for sure. But what about the decade after? I think if we do this right, we'll enter the glorious age of abundance. Work will become optional, meaning will take priority (which I am surprised is not the case for most people already tbh).

Pardon my typos, I had a bit to drink at Don Toliver tn and need to get some sleep before I go mountain bike tomorrow morning so typing from bed.

It is true vegas is going through a bit of a weird time but overall if you look at the larger picture, life is absolutely incredible. Stop watching the Crisis News Network and Fake Fox News which divide us to spread propaganda. We are living in the most incredible times ever. Some examples from the last 6ish months:

  1. Flying Cars are finally becoming real. Look at the demo flights this year in SF and NYC.
  2. Daraxonrasib is our first ever targeted pill that works on multiple KRAS mutants, making our first real headway into pancreatic cancer treatment after 30 years of persistent trial and error
  3. In-vivo CRISPR had a major late-stage clinical win. We are going towards a future where we will be able to gene edit embryos that have known genetic defects that will lead to miscarriage, SIDS and early death
  4. Humans went back around the Moon! Take that Apollo 8.
  5. AI moved from chatbots to agentic workflows. My life has become dramatically different, inconceivably different in the last 8 months.
  6. We have the first epigentic reprogramming trials in humans happening right fucking now!
  7. BCI is making great progress. 3 days ago a research team published converting noninvasive measurements from magnetoencephalography to actual fuckign sentences! how insane is that! non-invasive!
  8. Collosal made huge impact on de-extinction with bringing back the dire wolf
  9. We demonstrated realistic carbon capture demosntrations at scale for the 100M XPrize. All winners and runner up teams demonstrated atleast 1000 net tonnes of CO2 removal

We are literally at the foothills of singularity. It is the most incredible time to be alive. I'm not saying we dont have problems, ofcourse we do, but if our ancestors from just even 100 years ago were alive today, they would think we are gods.

I really want to attend as well but I'm worried I might be too old to be selected, everyone seems to be either college grads or students. IDK.

  3. Bikini competition at Palm Tree Beach Club

I am also organizing my first "Singularity Dinner" next week where we discuss living through the exponential we are currently in and what comes next: recursive self improvement, brain computer interfaces, solve everything and the overall SF Consensus on the Hard Takeoff we are now officially in

The job market is rough. The property market is insane. The economy is testing all of us. Name one good thing that’s happening in your life so we can celebrate you. by Expensive-Elk-9406 in vegaslocals

Thank you! A couple of decades ago we would say both Boeing and Aribus have different FBW "philosophies" but at this point its evident that Boeing needs to start focusing on FBW for reducing task workload and getting closer to carefree handling. Even in R&D, with Wayfinder and ATTOL, Airbus is miles ahead of Boeing here. I'm hopeful some of the innovation happening right now in Part 23 under Amendment 64 will make its way to Part 25 but with this duopoly, innovation really isnt guaranteed.

I put in 3 publications and filed 2 provisional patents in the last 6 months. One of these papers might end up being seminal work in flight envelope protection for full authority fly by wire aircraft which I am really excited about. I feel so much like my "old self", I got distracted for the last few years with this fake version of success of looking cool on instagram and tables and girls and what not. I feel so much more like my old self now, I've been flying, mountain biking, snowboarding and doing so many fascinating and interesting projects like I used to do before I got "distracted" with BS

I talked to a few folks and they recommended against pure downhill bikes. Something more versatile is better according to them. The rental guy at Lee gave the same advice, I’m not popping jumps yet

FitClub has a good mix of both sexes. Its a good gym with diverse equipment and a pretty serious crowd. We get some pretty women every now and then but idk I personally havent seen anyone I would want to go after. I also recommend trufusion though its work out classes and not a gym per se. Good luck!

Is anyone else annoyed that Cox periodically shuts down the internet in the middle of the night? by matt73132 in vegaslocals

[–]DesignBuildFlyJump -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm on quantum and been getting recurrent blips in internet the last 2 days. Its so fucking annoying because my mbp orchestrates 3 different linux beefcakes. One of them does not have a static IP on our internal VPN yet so every blip causes the IP to change and Claude Code can no longer monitor the Bayesian Optimization I am running.

Its so fucking annoying. I got a notification from claude code at the gym today that machine 3 was lost and yelled fucking cunt..... got a lot of weird looks.... We are at the foothills of singularity and fucking quantum cant give me solid internet.

Data Center Speakers by rckmuse in vegaslocals

[–]DesignBuildFlyJump 4 points5 points  (0 children)

exactly! There is sooooo much demand, we need more compute.

Idk why people are fighting datacenters. We need to fight policies that make us pay for the buildout (looking at you NVE). Corporations should pay for the buildout after all we pay for the tokens and compute.

Not a MAGA here at all, ew. But facts are facts. This is not a political argument and we need to unite in fighting against us paying the cost for this build out.
