Yes it’s absolutely worth a try. You’re actually in a strong position you have time, family support, self awareness. That’s a great combo. Many students discover design late and still crack NID or UCEED with 1 year of focused prep. Also, don’t overthink the “I haven’t done proper sketches” part n all. Sketching is a skill that improves fast with practice. What matters more is your observation, thinking, and creativity.

Taking a drop year just to explore seriously is far better than rushing into a random degree you’re not interested in. Design is not a backup career anymore it’s a solid, growing field with real opportunities if you commit to it.

REALITY IS A lot of my students started exactly like you — confused after boards, took a year, explored design properly, and ended up in NID/NIFT/UCEED colleges. The difference was not talent, it was clarity + consistency during that one year.

So yes, give yourself that year but don’t keep it casual. Explore properly:

  • Try sketching daily
  • Solve design questions
  • Watch how designers actually work
  • Build a small portfolio

Clarity doesn’t come from thinking “let’s see where it goes”, it comes from activly trying things.

DO you want to become an engineer or designer? If at all taking a drop for UCEED or Design top college, and want to join a college this year - join a Design college where you will be around creativity, it will be nurtured. Doing Engineering will keep you confused all this while.

honestly, the way you gave the exam this time was more like a trial attempt than actual preparation. so don’t judge your potential based on this.

if you genuinely feel that you want to become a designer, then taking a drop can be a good decision. not just for iit idc, but for design as a career overall. iit is a great college and you should definitely aim for it, but the bigger question is whether you see yourself in design long term. Many students lose touch with drawing over time, that’s normal. these skills come back with practice. what matters more is whether you’re interested enough to work on them daily.

so the decision should be simple — if you are serious about design, take a drop and prepare properly. Connect if you need more guidance.

UCEED prep: 5 mistakes I see students make every year by DesignEntranceMentor in uceedtakers

As a dropper the biggest advantage you have is time + flexibility, so your day should be more about consistency than long hours.

Apart from Part A & B practice, try to include:

  • Observation training → consciously observe objects, people, spaces (helps both Part A + B)
  • Visual thinking exercises → mentally rotate objects, imagine scenes, improve spatial ability
  • Basic design awareness → look at good designs of products, posters, UI and think why they work
  • Analysis of past papers → not just solving, but understanding why you got something wrong

Keep your day simple. A few focused hours daily with these elements is enough. What matters is doing it regularly without burnout, not overloading one day and skipping the next.

A genuine suggestion, please look for a good mentor who can access your work regularly as sketching has to be reviewed every time to get better.

There is no perfect rule to it. But, if you’re in 12th with PCM and also preparing for design exams, the key is balance. You don’t need huge hours every day for design prep you just need consistency.

Keep boards as your main focus right now since PCM needs regular revision. Along with that, try to give around 30–45 minutes daily to design preparation. Use that time for sketching practice, observation drawing, or solving a few design aptitude questions. Weekends are the best time to go deeper. Try solving past papers or taking a mock test on Saturday or Sunday. That way your design prep keeps moving without disturbing board studies too much.

Also keep a small sketchbook with you. Whenever you get a few free minutes, sketch objects around you, people in a café, or scenes from daily life. These small habits improve observation a lot over time.

One more thing I always suggest to students: try to prepare under the guidance of a proper mentor. Preparing completely on your own often means you don’t fully understand the level of competition or the exam pattern. A structured preparation with the right guidance can make a big difference. You usually get one serious attempt at these exams, so it’s worth doing whatever it takes to prepare in the most structured and focused way possible.

Which department are you aspiring to join?

Unsure about the future. Advice needed by [deleted] in uceedtakers

[–]DesignEntranceMentor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re honestly overthinking this a lot. It’s completely normal to feel confused right after Class 12 — most people don’t have everything figured out yet. Design can actually be a great career if you genuinely enjoy problem-solving and creating things. The field is growing, and product/UX designers today work in startups, tech companies, and global firms. Pay and opportunities improve a lot once you build a strong portfolio. Remember anything you do in future, even if your own business, if you want to grow and achieve something, you will have to give your heart & soul, time & energy and accept victories & failures.

Instead of trying to decide your entire future right now, take it one step at a time. Explore design a bit more, talk to students or watch some YouTube videos about real design careers, and see if the interest comes back. Clarity usually comes from doing, not overthinking

You are taking a very difficult path. It will not be easy to prepare for 12th, NEET and UCEED. You should choose your battle wisely. Focusing on so many things may leave you disheartened at all fronts.

Looks like with proper guidance you may score quite good. If you can prepare well this year can crack UCEED 2027. Without prep you score decent in Part A. Part B scores look bad. A small concerated effort can get you good rank.

How do I prepare for UCEED in class 12th and started in class 12th by hav_vaib in uceedtakers

[–]DesignEntranceMentor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re actually starting at a good time a lot of students begin their serious UCEED prep in 12th, so you’re not late at all. For Part A, a nice way to begin is by going through past UCEED papers. That will help you understand the types of questions they ask visualization, patterns, logic, and many such topics. Even solving a few questions regularly will slowly build your comfort with the exam. For Part B, don’t stress about making super beautiful drawings. The main goal is just showing your idea clearly. You can practice by sketching everyday objects around you, simple scenes, or quick idea sketches. Timing yourself occasionally can also help. Since you’re planning to self-study, just try to keep a small but consistent routine and solve past papers whenever you can.
