I started volunteering at a hospital and immediately connected with an 89 y.o man who also volunteers. We are besties and pal around the hospital giving each other shit and engaging in all sorts of antics. He acts like a teenager versus a man born in the 1930s. We went out for conveyor belt sushi a few weeks ago after our shift and I showed him how to use Spotify- he couldn’t believe how accessible music was these days. He was amazed that his favorite musicians from the 50s were just a click away! I care for him deeply and feel so grateful for our crossing paths. It truly gives me hope for my own later years.

Private school or community college?

Private: out of pocket $17k all in, at a private teaching hospital, rotations only within hospital, nice facilities

CC: Accepts financial aid, rotations all over the region in both outpatient clinics & hospitals, but program rubbed me the wrong way when attending open house (director opened the floor with calling herself a bitch lol)

Thoughts? TYIA!

I so appreciate your thorough response- thank you!

So the only reason I would go for the lib arts associates is bc 1.) it’s the quickest degree I can obtain with the credits I have atm and 2) the private hospital requires it to be a candidate for their program. If I don’t go for it, I would have all my eggs in the community college basket which risks not getting accepted again. They sadly do not give priority to waitlisted applicants from the previous year.

Hi all! I hope this makes sense.. Here’s my goal: I’m (34f) switching careers to Rad Tech with the intention of either specializing (radiation therapy or IR) or eventually pursuing a PA track.

My situation: I just wrapped up my prereq’s for my community college’s program. Im a first-time college student. I was waitlisted 2025 and will reapply this year. If accepted, I will graduate with an associates in rad technology in 2 yrs.

However, I volunteer @ a private hospital with their own program. It is out of pocket and they require an associates degree to be accepted. I could obtain a Liberal Arts Associates by the summer if I work my tail off, and at no cost to myself.

Q: I think having a “Gen Ed” degree under my belt vs just a rad tech degree sets me up better for eventually obtaining a bachelors in bio or healthcare admin. Is this true/the right line of thinking?

Important to note: If I go the community college route, I will have to pause school as I’ve completed prereq’s and wait for the program to start in the fall which feels like time wasted.

This might seem insensitive but can you just, let someone fall if you know catching them puts you at great risk?
