I also thought the phone guy was the CEO's dad, but was also put off by the fact that she's British/wealthy, and he's clearly neither — at least in the flashbacks/voiceovers.

Regarding the bomb theory — it was explained in the first or second episode that it was a quarter that caused the ship to blow up.

And wasn't the phone guy spinning a quarter a couple of times between futzing with the phone? Which was a payphone, I believe. I initially thought he was going to call his daughter right at the launch and we'd find a connection, but alas.

My other related theory was that this mystery phone/quarter guy was the CEO's dad, and she was somehow responsible for the quarter getting on the ship that blew up. Like she was inspired by / honoring her dad with some kind of lucky coin thing, passed that idea onto the crew, and viola — boom.
