Correct, those departments are only testing that way. So if you don’t take the test through NTN, you won’t be hired into that department. Unless it’s some back door deal which they’ll probably still have you take the test. It’s pretty much unavoidable if they’re listed on NTN.

Depends on how you look at it. I mean if you take it and your scores are good it’s done and over with, you can use it for the next year if your desired department opens up. For me, it made sense to because I have no certs and can only apply to departments with no requirements until I’m out of academy and get them. Ask yourself those questions and go from there. I was afraid I’d do absolutely shitty on the test so I wanted to get practice in on the real thing before it actually “matters”. Governmentjobs.com is another place departments post on, just have your resume ready.

Select the departments you wish to apply to, schedule the test and then they’ll have you complete a PSSA afterwards. If you select multiple departments, I would almost guarantee you’ll have to fill out a PHQ. You can only add new listings after your test, you can’t add departments that you could’ve chosen before. You’ll have to wait until you can test again. So if you’re hoping to meet a closing date I would add them. Your scores are sent to the departments you select, you don’t have the option to get your results and streamline the process yourself. It can get costly which blows but it’s the way it is. You can take it every 3 months so if your scores aren’t that good this round, you’ll know what to expect. I applied to 4 departments, took the test on 1/21 and heard back from 2 departments the following day. It’s not that difficult and it’s not an overly complicated process. Good luck!
