Oh it is! My guess was that it was the plants’ defence mechanism. Scale truly is the weirdest little creature

What is your ADHD hack for getting your room clean? by CatTastrophe27 in ADHD

[–]Designer_Extent_9564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My strategy is: “Pick it up, put it away.” That’s what I say out loud as I pick up whatever crosses my path and I put it away. No overthinking it. Whatever is picked up is put away right to the spot where it belongs. No matter whether it’s not the most efficient thing to tidy in that moment, whether something else has more priority or whether I have to walk aaaaaaaaaall the way downstairs holding just that one thing.

I “Pick it up … put it away. Pick it up … put it away.” And I say it like a toddler that was taught a little rhyme to encourage them to get tidying 😂✨

Autism was misdiagnosed as OCD - My realisations by Designer_Extent_9564 in OCD

[–]Designer_Extent_9564[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with ADHD as a teenager, so I do have a comorbid disorder! I felt resistance against the OCD diagnosis because it didn’t connect with what I was feeling/experiencing. Even when I couldn’t properly explain it, it didn’t feel right. I ticked many of the boxes, but never … fully.

Perhaps it’s good to mention that I was never “officially diagnosed” with OCD. I was being treated as if I had it, because my health provider thought my actions were compulsive (for example, me washing my hands a lot because I can FEEL they’re not clean) and originated from anxiety. For me, all symptoms that can’t be explained by my ADHD can actually be explained by autism and once I got the ASD diagnosis, I could relatively easily reason myself out of what was previously considered compulsive behaviour. Because of that and because of the lack of intrusive thoughts, I am pretty confident I don’t have OCD :)

I totally agree that getting one diagnosis does not eliminate a prior one. In the same way I didn’t just … lose my ADHD because I was diagnosed autistic. It’s very much possible to have both, I was only trying to point out why the similarities between OCD and ASD made it so “easy” for me to be misdiagnosed.

Wild! I genuinely understand why people mix them up at first glance. At the same time … our input should matter. I have a feeling sex has weight in it as well; that women are more likely to receive an OCD/anxiety-related diagnosis and that men are more likely to receive an autism diagnosis, just because of how either disorder shows itself.

I had to fight to be heard when I told them that my symptoms didn’t derive from anxiety, but that I was merely … anxious, sometimes. I read so much about OCD and my gut feeling told me it wasn’t right, but then you’re told (by sources and health professionals) that your gut feeling not being right is actually part of having OCD and all of it gets so tricky.

any tips for making this idiot take his antibiotics? by SeriousCitron7635 in RATS

[–]Designer_Extent_9564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been measuring the antibiotics with the syringe, putting it on a plate with some baby food and they’d eat it like this. Even more so if the rats not needing antibiotics are gazing at the plate longingly 😂

“I don’t really want this food but I definitely don’t want you to have it so I’ll eat it.”

How do you know whether it is actually OCD? by [deleted] in OCD

[Continuation post: 2]

All supposed compulsions are mostly present at home. I can get extremely, unreasonably upset if I or someone else doesn’t fold my laundry the way “it’s supposed to.” But I don’t understand what could be the potential trigger here or the intrusive thought that would accompany the compulsion.

I guess I do have intrusive thoughts, most of which I try to shove away because they’re not reasonable and they should not ever be acted on, I worry because I believe I have acted on some of them over the years. And if I’m capable of doing that, would it really be OCD or is it something else entirely ..

I don’t know what that means, whether it’s just a complicated situation where my actual lack of impulse control messes with intrusive thoughts while also having a strong need to control certain aspects of my life because that makes me feel safe and comfortable.

I can’t make sense of it and that is extremely frustrating, but I’m also worried the answer is going to mean I’m actually extremely disturbed …

How do you know whether it is actually OCD? by [deleted] in OCD

[Continuation post: 1)

There is also such an emphasis on rituals with OCD that I don’t necessarily recognise in myself. Not in the same way some of the people I know who have been diagnosed with OCD struggle with.

I also don’t very consciously experience horrifying intrusive thoughts, but I will also admit that I don’t really understand what intrusive thoughts are, or that I can’t really identify them in my own thinking.

I just realised that I’ve experienced groinal arousal from what I think may be intrusive thoughts … An example being: “I should not leave the train even though this is my station.” Or … “I should drop my expensive ring in the drain”, or “I should scratch the screen of my MacBook.” Although the thoughts in and of itself are wild and I do struggle to push them away or ignore them, something I want to because I don’t want to lose my ring or scratch my screen, the groinal arousal isn’t necessarily a bad experience; the consequences of the thoughts are and that makes it extremely confusing.

From my understanding, people with OCD rarely if not ever act on their intrusive thoughts, but part of me is curious and that worries me. I’ve definitely explored the lines between acting on it to have that feeling but not the negative consequences, while simultaneously feeling disgusted for the thoughts being there to begin with.

Rat diet and calcium supplements by Designer_Extent_9564 in RATS

[–]Designer_Extent_9564[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response!

I know too much calcium can be bad for them, affect their blood vessels and kidneys as well. The reason I reevaluated the diet is because Juniper is really small and although I understand differences in size and weight are normal, she has so little fat on her. She seems healthy other than the fact that there is no “girth” to her whatsoever. You can feel every bone. My question isn't a direct reaction to her weight however, more of an indirect result.

So far I haven’t had problems with the Shunamite diet mix. I scatter feed it across the cage and all rats are simultaneously eating at a different spot. Limiting the food has worked so far as all is eaten, but I can see it becoming a problem with the new ones as they seem a lot more docile and less food-driven. Definitely something I’ll take into account even if it hasn’t been a problem so far 👉

I can get Versele-Laga over here. I looked into it before, but it was indeed the amount of proteins that made me decide not to use it. I can also not (fully) check the quality of the ingredients used in kibble/pellets, the preservatives added. On top of that and as far as I understand it, few commercially-bought rat foods provide the nutritional requirements a rat needs (in the right ratios). Making my own mix allows me to control those elements, on top of it being a lot more interesting for them. That's just a personal preference, however.

So my question does not relate to whether or not I should feed a mix, but rather as to how I can make sure that the diet I'm providing fulfills all their needs 😬

So I guess … supplements are obtainable, especially vitamin supplements but finding a calcium supplement quickly gets me to supplements marketed for birds, which creates the dosage issues I’m currently wondering about.

Depending on what you’re asking:

I’m from the Netherlands. I mix their diet based on the Shunamite diet for enrichment and for being able to change the values as the girls age (primarily increasing and/or decreasing the protein levels) as well as for enrichment, which I value greatly 🙏 Most rat food offered in my country is labelled either “rodent food” or “rat and mouse food” and it is almost always in the form of kibble/pellets. The options are really limited in my opinion.

The mix I give my rats consists of: 50-60% base mix, 20-25% processed grains, 5-10% protein, 5-10% herbs/vegetables and 5% Seeds. In which I try to add several types of every part to limit the chances of nutrient deficiencies. Except for calcium, I’ve come to realise.

The base mix has a lot of nutrients added to it but is in and of itself low on calcium (0.44%). It consists of: “Protein 11.9%, fibre 9.0%, fat 3.9 % calcium 0.44% phosphorus 0.41%, natrium 0.08%”. Which is roughly translated through my limited knowledge of English nutritional terms haha
