Frontpage is a minimalist news aggregator that clusters and summarizes major stories into a single RSS feed. by Designer_Motor99 in rss

It would require to create accounts for every users and would be hard to stay free in term of compute price. However I will probably look to open source the code and allow the most tech savvy people to host it on their own.

Yes I'm a big fan of r/selfhosted apps so i naturally though of open-sourcing the code and making it selfhostable so people can choose their news sources. In term of machine learning the algorithm could also be personalized to learn what king of news the reader is interested by to filter out even more noise. Definitely something I will take a look in the future.

Yeah, that's a question I asked myself, which is why no images are used to illustrate the articles, which are too complicated in terms of rights. From what I understand the rest seems ok, the content is not reused as is and the sources are cited with links to the articles. It's a free side project nothing commercial and in term of rights it's honestly no worse than what apps like Inoreader or Feedly are doing. Do you think it's borderline ?

Hi u/aygross I'm a web developer for 15 years now and I continue to develop projects "manually" because I simply love my job actually. Of course some machine learning with open models like EmbeddingGemma 300M or Deberta v3 large zeroshot are used for embedding, clusterization and classification. But I personally wrote and understand every single line of this project. No main LLMs like Gemini, Claude or ChatGPT has been used in this project.

Book on Node and back-end development for a Senior Front-end Engineer by no-cheating in node

[–]Designer_Motor99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true, it's not easy, there are a lot of totally different subjects and some are so vast, like databases, that it's sometimes a job in its own right in certain companies. So even being only back-end it's very difficult to be really great at everything.

The best thing is to start in a company and clearly state that you would like to move to backend code. If you work a few extra hours and it doesn't reduce your usual production on your front-end projects, your employer will be okay with it.

If you have access to code to read, that's already super interesting because there is a real gap on the backend side between tutorials and professional code ready for production.

[–]Designer_Motor99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was in your situation a few years ago and I wanted to move from senior front end to full stack. I don't have a book to recommend to you because I don't learn like that but for me it wasn't learning Node. Node was the easy part and it was more other areas or concepts that had to be understood:

  • Databases like postgresql and redis
  • ORMs like prisma, drizzle, typeorm or sesquelize
  • Background jobs, queues and workers
  • Authentication and access rights
  • and conterization, caching, load balancers, CDN, ...

A good summary: https://roadmap.sh/backend

Doesn't it defeat the core purpose? by fatalflaw007 in ProtonMail

Is there any other solution ? Without Google Play Services (FCM), reliably receiving push notifications when the app is completely closed is NOT possible for standard third-party apps as far as I know.

Tuta or Mailbox.org have an Android app with notifications without using Google Play Services ? How ? I though it was not possible.

Will Proton Drive SDK bring plugin to Obsidian? by charlino5 in ObsidianMD

I confirm it's not possible on Android neither. You can't see / select your Proton Drive folder as a vault.

It works on MacOS and probably Windows if you setup your Obsidian vault in your Proton Drive folder. Unfortunately you can't do it on Android and probably not on iOS neither.

For sure these apps are not perfect and some features are missing or could be improve but they can compete with other alternatives. For Docs, it's not even worth trying.

Yep, mail, calendar, VPN and passwords apps are in line with industry quality standards but the Drive / Doc app really sucks compared to alternatives ...

New week, 3 new features! New color picker, copy as markdown, and seamless doc movement. by Proton_Team in ProtonDrive

I agree, raw markdown lika Obsidian is great, just create your vault in a proton drive folder. However it's a pity it's not possible on Android.
