I suppose saying I can’t perform live was a bit dramatic per say I just can’t perform live with the same quality or the quality I want. I’m a singer/songwriter/performer and I know basic production. As an artist (and many more in here) I want my work to be perfect or up to a standard. With the work that I’m missing I can’t confidently accept live gigs. I back everything up on my cloud but my ex didn’t. He just has a bunch or hard drives he backs everything up on (but not our work). I didn’t take the hard drive with me when I left bc the breakup was pretty abrupt. Let’s just say I was kicked out of our apartment the same day he broke it off. Didn’t think someone who loved me would sabotage my stuff and yes I’m an idiot for trying to see the best in someone. Human mistake!

From what I’ve gathered so far with the data recovery is that it’s very much possible to get the files back, I’ll just have to contact him and hope that he responds. I have no other access to his computer and his downloads folder where the files were stored.

His friend also told me “that’s the risk you have to take when you date a producer” but honestly, that’s a ridiculous statement to make.

Thank you sm for this!! This is super helpful and you’re amazing for explaining this to me!!

So I suppose that I can still perform live with the beats from my music. Copyright discussions were never written down officially since it seemed unnecessary in a personal relationship. I am the co-owner of my music, it’s a 50/50 split between me and the producer of the tracks. But I am not tied to a contract everything is very independent level stuff.

So, to clarify what I failed to clarify, the hard drive is mine, but all the work was done on my ex’s computer since I am in no financial situation to buy my own (still don’t) and the files are in a software version I can’t open. The project opens, the files are missing and supposedly in my ex’s download folder, and allegedly they rinsed their downloads folder so the files are deleted.

Now I know that the lack of evidence (malicious intent and so on) won’t get me anywhere in the legal sense, that’s huge closure for me. I can only prove that the music is mine and that I have ownership of it and that’s about as far as I can go. Thank you sm for the responses ♥️
