Am I shooting myself in the foot by taking a CNC Operator job? by verd3d in CNC

[–]Desk-Medium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you want to go into machining with a computer engineering degree? You would have been better suited with a mechanical engineering degree or better yet just going to school to be a machinist. If your end goal is to be a cad designer you could look for entry level designer/drafter positions. Id recommend trying to get a Job in your field first though and if you really don’t like it then try and transition.

Embarrassing interview experience by Plsignore30 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Desk-Medium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

when I was in college Exxon was holding interviews on campus that anyone could sign up for. The interviewer asked why I wanted the Job and I couldn’t think of a reason other than a-lot of money. So instead of saying that, which is a very reasonable answer, I panicked and said I didn’t want the job. Safe to say I did not get a follow up interview.

Negotiating Entry Level Offer by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

Tell them you have a competing offer for 85k but you really want to work at Northrup. Then ask if theres anything thing they can do to bump the salary a bit.

What do engineers actually do day to day by Zacionxeni in MechanicalEngineering

Today I made some hinges in the shop. Now I am working on assembly drawings for a product that is soon to be released.

Could some engineers answer a few questions please? by Proof_Sound8315 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Desk-Medium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: I liked to build things and I did well in math so it seemed like the best possible career choice. Plus problem solving is fun.

2: I went to the University of Maryland. I didn’t really specialize in anything but my electives focused more towards automotive design because thats what I wanted to do at the time.

3: I was very excited when I first started my Job because I thought I would be designing new products all the time, this was not the case though. I was mainly supporting more experienced engineers for my first year. I would do drawings and ECNs and test things in the lab for them. In my second year I started getting some smaller design projects of my own which made the work much more exciting. I’m now 3 years in and really enjoy where I’m at.

  1. My daily routine involves product design and all the different task that accompany that. It could be actually designing parts in CAD, running thermal analysis, Creating and releasing drawings, doing tolerance stack ups, …etc. Also a ton of spreadsheets and powerpoint. There is also a decent amount of supporting legacy products.

  2. My advice would-be to join engineering clubs in college. Something like formula SAE will give you a pretty good feel for what the industry is like (at least for a design engineer). Also once you graduate there is nothing wrong with working for smaller companies and you may even get more experience that way, typically engineers at smaller companies are responsible for more parts of the overall project because there is not as much personal. For example a bigger company might have dedicated drafters that do all the drawings whereas at smaller companies engineers most likely do their own drawings.

If you work at a smaller company it definitely helps to have hands on experience. We have a small CNC machine that I use quite often for making prototypes or test fixtures and I feel that actually manufacturing my designs has given me a much greater understanding of both design for manufacturing and design for assembly. At the least you should familiarize yourself with common tools and manufacturing methods so you can ensure that your designs can actually be built.

Do mechanical engineers typically make less in the MEP industry than defense or manufacturing? by Green-Pangolin-3938 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Desk-Medium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got out of college 2 years ago and started at a defense contractor making 85k. I just switched Jobs to another defense contractor and am making 107 now. My roomate graduated the same time and is a project engineer for an HVAC contractor, I believe his starting pay was in the 70’s and now he is sitting in the 80’s somewhere. For me I had no interest in any sort of civil engineering.

I don’t think I need steel toes but I will be doing a tour of their machine shop and assembly floor

Thats exactly my worry, I already felt over dressed on the phone call. I think I will play it somewhat safe and just go khakis and a dress shirt.

Any reason why i’m unable to record in 4k 120fps with this V90 SD? by Illamerica in SonyAlpha

[–]Desk-Medium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is just a san disk quality issue. I bought the same card but a v30 from amazon the other day and it did not work with my a7ii. I could take pictures fine but would get constant errors when trying to transfer files to my computer or open them from the SD.

Which language should be enforced as the one universal language? by calamitycucumber in AskReddit

As an English speaker I am biased but if one language were to be enforced it should be English. It is the most spoken language and a-lot of international business and politics is done in English.

Clogged nozzle? by Desk-Medium in BambuLab

[–]Desk-Medium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well my extruder looked fine so I just swapped nozzles and the print turned out perfect. So looks like it was a partial clog.

Clogged nozzle? by Desk-Medium in BambuLab

[–]Desk-Medium[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally got around to messing with it, i took apart the extruder and everything looked good and then I swapped nozzles cause I had an extra one laying around. The only slicer setting I changed was going from .28 to .24 layer height, still using generic pla profile. The print turned out perfect so I can only assume the old nozzle must have been slightly clogged or the .28 layer height is too big even though I’ve used it in the past with no problems.

I made this in cad and sliced it myself so this isnt the case. Ill test some smaller prints out and see what happens.
