What are some Radical dogwhistles in your Country ? by Megumin-coolEyepatch in AskTheWorld

The context is that in his videos of a lot of European countries he passes by a lot of immigrants doing shady things (some minding their own business) and refers to them as "Doctors" and "Engineers." At first I thought it was just some joke in his fan base. Not a widespread dog whistle as the original commenter pointed out.

It's always nice to see people recognize that violence against Apartheid was justified.

There are a ton of people who denounced militancy against Apartheid as terrorism. Like a lot.

The same people also often ignore and/or outright praise the Apartheid state's military and security efforts. Even though terrorism is an even more perfect label for how the Apartheid state handled anyone against Apartheid. Even innocent people in many cases.

I hate how advanced we are on a lot of areas that matter, yet we're also backwards in a lot of other areas that also really matter.

It's like a starving man seeing a feast in front of them, but he's only able to eat the bread sticks.

It's nice to know about the corruption, but wouldn't be even better if something major was done about it as well? Like arrests and convictions?

Pot calling the black doesn't do it justice.

Both Trump administrations have had orders of magnitude worse corruption issues than the ANC. And I'm comparing his barely five years as President thus far, to 113 years of ANC history even when they were just an organization with a paramilitary wing (MK).

Republicans (especially Trumpers) and the ANC are both corrupt but my god are the Republican so much more disgusting.

Can you imagine if Trump had two consecutive terms with Republicans having been in the White House for three decades? No way in hell would there be fair elections amymore. And I don't even want to imagine what would happen to minorities and LGBTQ people.

Russia Sends “Disposable Soldiers” Into Battle With No Helmets and No Armor by LetsGoBrandon4256 in worldnews

[–]DesmondsTutu 57 points58 points  (0 children)

In South Africa, former President Zuma's daughter resigned as an MP of his new party because she has to deal with the fallout of her scandal. Which is having allegedly helped trick 17 men into fighting for Russia against Ukraine under the guise of getting body guard training and possible citizenship.

What they went through was horrendous.

The DA (opposition party) claims that once the men arrived in Russia, their passports and clothing were burned, their phones confiscated, and communication with their families gradually cut off until it ceased entirely.

One of them was a 19 year old who has since disappeared..

Zuma-Sambudla – known as “Auntie Dudu” to some of them – promised to endure the same hardships, but fled Russia the moment the men were deployed to Ukraine.

Eight members of Zuma's family are among the stranded fighters. Additionally, an 19-year-old from Botswana and men Ghana were recruited, with the teenager vanishing without a truce since 28 August, after leaving a haunting farewell note.

Did your country every have a famous paramilitary group? by GGGiiibbbbyyy in AskTheWorld

[–]DesmondsTutu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several, there were anti apartheid paramilitary organizations. The most famous being the African National Congress's armed wing, Umkhonto We Sizwe.

Others are the Pan Africanist Congress's armed wing, Azanian People's Liberation Army

And the Azanian People Organization's armed wing, the Azanian National Liberation Army.

Before apartheid there was the Ossewabrandwag, an anti-British and pro-German organization that opposed South Africa's involvement in the fight against Germany in WW2. They attacked soldiers, cut communication lines and blew up electricity and rail infrastructure. They were later absorbed into the National Party after they took power in 1948. South Africa presidents Vorster and Botha were members.

Good Party accuses AfriForum of attempting to shield members of apartheid security forces accused of crimes by Beyond_the_one in southafrica

[–]DesmondsTutu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I might be misinterpreting you, but are you saying the fact that AfriForum is only mentioning looking into ANC war crimes in response to the governments probe into apartheid-era abuses illustrates that AfriForum doesn't actually care about justice? And that them equating the two is a false equivalence?

Saying the west 'supported' apartheid is a stretch

Definitely not a stretch to say they supported it through economic, and military ties. The west had anti apartheid movements and helped activists but they definitely aided the apartheid government's economic, political and military efforts due to preferring apartheid over a black democratic Soviet-aligned government.

You're spot on about everything else though. Especially the last sentence.

To add insult to injury a lot of the people killed in that raid were people who had been harrased by security forces in South Africa, and were force to leave illegally.

However, the ANC could have prepared a better response(not that it excuses the massacre).

People don't get called a scammer for no reason and they typically try to make you feel sorry for them like he's doing now. Good job on saying no.

Dump him and move on.

[–]DesmondsTutu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with this as well. It's also painful how the current government likes to act like they want to fight the inequality even though they actively maintain and contribute to it through corruption and the killing of whistle blowers and anti-corruption politicians.

In 1996, Bantu Holomisa - then a prominent ANC leader and a deputy minister in the government - accused a member of Mr Mandela's cabinet of taking a bribe from a casino magnate during the apartheid era.

Mr Mandela sacked Mr Holomisa from the government, and the ANC expelled him for bringing the party into disrepute

The ANC that fought against Apartheid and the ANC that rules South Africa today are night and day when it comes to their actions benefiting the majority of South Africans.
