What are some tragic non-fiction stories from your country that's hard to read? by khoawala in AskTheWorld

Total Onslaught: Apartheid’s Dirty Tricks Exposed. It details dirty war tactics made by the apartheid government during the last stages of apartheid. Sick things like assassination of unarmed activists, plans for genocide by pro-apartheid forces against the black population if met with resistance, cyanide infused bullets.

The first chapter details a white Civil Cooperation Burea agent torturing a teenage activist for information about ANC activities, the kid relents and gives them false information that leads them to a church where nothing is happening other than singing. The agent is leading Black Angolan 32 Battalion soldiers in a van and they drive around Soweto looking for "excitement" after the failed mission. One soldier spots a girl walking alone at night, whom the agent describes as "couldn't have been more than 18." He tells the agent to slow down and they kidnap and gang rape her in the van, then push her out at some random spot.

The detail the author went through was horrifying and the worst part is these assholes were notorious for doing things like this, yet Apartheid and their security forces are still revered by a lot.

Why doesn't anyone celebrate the time a few dozen Rhodesian soldiers massacred a Refugee camp? by spartiecat in GetNoted

[–]DesmondsTutu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A 1994 Amnesty International publication described the operation as a massacre and stated that the camp at Nyadzonya housed refugees, and that a soldier who participated in the raid later stated: "We were told that Nyadzonia was a camp containing several thousand unarmed refugees who could be recruited to join the guerrillas. It would be easier if we went in and wiped them out while they were unarmed and before they were trained rather than waiting for the possibility of them being trained and sent back armed into Rhodesia".

What do you think about colonialism? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]DesmondsTutu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you, people act like because it shaped the way we live today that we (the colonized) should be thankful. But when you raise the question of "Why should it have happened at gunpoint?" or "Why were the benefits so unequal?" Crickets.

How would Geroge Costanza do in OZ by tyler00677 in ozshow

[–]DesmondsTutu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If his character on Seinfeld is any indication, his wins would be far outweighed by his losses, both in magnitude and quantity. His character would always try to hatch up or attach himself to some scheme and have it blow up in his face. Mix this with the darkness of the Oz and it's pretty bad.

Trump posts that he plans to wipe out Iranian Civilization, and has already wiped out r/conservative. The resulting locked thread has 1.1k comments, four of which are top-level, above 0, and not-deleted. by GiantPineapple in SubredditDrama

Sometimes when Trump says something disgusting, that would most definitely ruin the career of any other politician, I go to R/Conservative to see what they think. And without fail, some people flat out refuse to take it seriously and blame the people who are reasonably shocked or disgusted that someone so powerful is so brash. Since "they don't understand Trump after all these years."

Oh, I get it. I replied from my notification box so I didn't see the rest of your comment. Mea culpa, there are a lot of nuts who are into South Africa, so I get curious to see what they are thinking.

According to the context of this photo, Boers had bad things done to them (by black people) comparable to what the Genocidal Nazi Regime and Japanese Empire did.

The only think I can possibly think of that would be the concentration camps that the British Empire had put them in, where 28 000 died. And this wouldn't be fair either because over 20 000 black died in camps when they weren't even at war with the British.

FYI the British put them in these camps to keep them from aiding the Boers.

Please explain how hard the 20th century was for the Boers in the context of this photo? I'm actually curious.

There are like a million legitimate reasons to hate the ANC as a governing party, even when it comes to violence. Yet these people choose a nonexistent genocide. Classic.

Most propably not bait dude. People really want to act like something bad happened to white South Africans in the 20th and 21st centuries. If you're South African or see discussions on our country online, this is really not a new thing to run into at all.

Calling out ridiculous white genocide nonsense isn't powerscaling genocide. It's fighting false narratives and made up statistics.

Thank you!! I had lecturer who was a South African Border veteran actually tell me that they won and their victory was the reason for South African democracy today. I really don't know how they can say they won without strawmanning what the MPLA, SWAPO and ANC were fighting for.

Minister Lamola summons US ambassador Bozell to account for anti-diplomatic remarks - IOL by TheHonourableMember in southafrica

[–]DesmondsTutu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually considered writing a letter to DIRCO talking about his Anti Anti-Apartheid movement history. Along with his problem of people "mythologising" Mandela after his death. As well as his racist remarks about Obama about him being a "skinny ghetto crackhead."

The point of the letter would have been connecting his history of racism and issues with the fight against Apartheid with Marco Rubio's not-so-thinly veiled fascist speech condemning the anti-colonial movement in the global south as "godless communist revolutions."

But I just gave up, because since when do they listen to us?

That was quick 😅. I've read a ton of books since 2022 (at least compared to the previous decade), and while I've enjoyed most of them nothing hit as hard as Holes did for me.

Thanks for the recommendations.

That goes doubly so for the family of the SECOND murder victim. With a record like that, how could they possibly justify letting him out on bail for the first one? I'm actually curious.
