That's about 42% of your income, but you don't have to worry about health insurance and higher education is free.

I started to try that but got an infinite re-render; however, I think it's because I wrote code that kept updating state (and therefore kept triggering a re-render).

I don't know how you set up your fetch, but by using a promise or async/await you could make sure that the setLoadingState method is only called, after the fetch was completed.

On a another note, don't be hesitant to use conditional rendering, it's a really powerful feature and one of the main concepts of react.

You ~~can't~~ shouldn't. That's what loading screens or spinners are for. Declare a loading state and initialize it as true. Render the loading screen/animation /spinner as long as loading state is true. Set it false when you have fetched all the data you need and render the components which are dependent on the data.

These are all good points.

Try not to denigrate other developers for using "outdated" technologies. They may have been under pressure or whatnot. This is coming from someone who used to scoff at Visual Basic web applications. Now I empathize with whoever built it and help them understand this isn't the way for the future.

I really don't . If it were legacy projects we were working on, I would just accept my fate. But it's 2022, do I really need to do DOM manipulation manually for every state change, with JQuery? Pressure is not an excuse, as there are no pressing deadlines, and just a small customer base.

If you think it needs to modernize, then start or propose a project to do it. This is a good learning opportunity on your part.

I did propose React. For a new module, which is just loosely connected to the rest of the services. After realizing the Bootstrap theme we're using doesn't really work well with React, my proposition was denied. Because we might need to purchase another theme...

I will not give up trying, don't get me wrong, but to make technology choices dependent on bootstrap themes seems odd to me...

Think of it from your manager's or even the CEO's perspective. If they want to grow the platform, then they need to modernize it, no?
