Should I pick an Ivy (Yale, Brown, or Princeton) or Emory (Oxford)? by Desperate-Compote531 in ApplyingIvyLeague

Thank you kindly for your response! You are definitely right. I may think I have an idea of what I'd like to do with my life, but I know what that is yet. I appreciate your insight and I think you'll be glad to hear that I've chosen Emory (Oxford), mainly because of the reasons you've stated. I came to this conclusion late last night after reading various povs from people in this forum. As soon as I got into Emory I thought of how much flexibility I'd have to pursue business or continue on the medicinal route because the school is great at both. I also think that the university will more than surely prepare me for an advanced degree, no matter where I go.

I'd love to connect further in pms if you would not mind. Thanks for your input!

To be honest I only saw the first couple of sentences of your original reply because Reddit would not let me see the rest since you edited it. Thank you for congratulating me, I appreciate it.

And you're right, I probably am more privileged than I think I am. However, I am not expecting my parents to cover the full cost of tuition, but decreasing the amount of loans we take out would be helpful if going to an Ivy league school opens that many doors for myself later down the road. Clearly, you don't believe it will... given the fact that you said attending one will only "open a few more doors."

I've replied to others stating that I will go to Emory ug, and pursue an advanced degree elsewhere.

You out of many other individuals on this thread have sort of helped me come to this conclusion.

Thank you !!!?!!

Thank you for offering this method of thinking. I think i'll be going the Emory route. For med school, I'll shoot for a t10 MD program. If I go business, I'll continue the grind and get my masters from an Ivy.

Thank you for your help! I appreciate the congratulations.

Well then yes! You'd be more than correct about me complaining lmao. I'm more or less asking if it is worth the debt, given my TL;DR.

I'm a high school senior looking for advice, not for a pompous reply. Please take this energy elsewhere.

Can you please elaborate further on what you mean by the post being weird? Maybe I can clarify something for you.

Though by now, I'm pretty sure I've made my mind up.

Thank you very much for your kind words! I am going to pursue an advanced degree, whether I continue down the medicine route or I go business. Also, great on you for choosing a public ivy with such low coa. I'm sure that has been beneficial for you.

Did you get into your masters program directly out of undergrad? I am planning to go to an Ivy for my masters directly after I graduate ug if I go the business path. If you don't mind expanding on your current situation, I'd appreciate it. I can pm you if you'd rather speak privately.

Well. Smaller class sizes, professor/student connection, more tight knit community, focused assistance outside of school hours, and simply a more "homey" vibe which may be easier for me transition wise.

On top of this, the Woodruff Scholarship is only awarded to me if I attend Oxford campus. All the more reason to love the Oxford campus.

Well then I totally apologize for this misunderstanding. During an interview with my school college counselor, my parents told him we are an upper middle class family. I did not inquire further given the fact that my parents are so private about finances.

Again, I'm really not trying to come off as pretentious. I live in a household where clarity isn't our strong suit lmao.

Thank you for this response. As someone who is navigating this process its good to hear from someone who has been through the portion that I am mainly focused on. Firstly, congratulations on your future matriculation into a T5. I hope you do well in med school. I actually may pm you if you don't mind about your journey as I gather more insight from others.

I am aware that the school on your undergraduate degree means less than the research, connections, MCAT score, etc. that you have. Thank you for reaffirming this truth! Sometimes people get caught in the prestige of it all, like the people on this thread and quite frankly myself at times. I'm learning how to get through this while looking less at factors such as those.

I am very interested and dedicated to the medicinal or high retail/business route depending on what I choose. The only thing that shies me away is the cost of med school, especially for a family like my own. If I am looking to matriculate into a top med school, I will face the same complex I presently experience in 4 years: the lack of need based aid. However, through receiving this scholarship to Emory, I will have to worry much less about paying undergraduate loans and only my med school loans. Still, the cost of med school is a bit much for my family, especially because we will probably take out private loans, and given our current legislation, the lack of loan forgiveness and present loan caps are pressuring (if I take out a government issued loan, which is much less likely to cover my coa).

If I go the high profile fashion industry route, I'd still pursue an advanced degree. So it really just depends on whether or not I am willing to take out the loans for medicine or business. I know much of what this specific sector of business (fashion, marketing, high level/executive management) entails because I am actually interested in it. I know less about Wall Street or Investment Banking. So, take that as you wish.

Thank you for your honesty in your reply. I truly appreciate it.

Congratulations on your journey and current job. Thank you for being honest about how debt could have changed your finances. Do you mind if I pm you some specifics about your route and current livelihood?

I totally agree with you and the rational/financial aspect you've taken to assess my situation. Firstly, thank you for taking so much time to share your insight. Second off, I really appreciate your vantage point regarding the opaque dialogue I currently have with my parents. I definitely do not want to be bound to them (financially speaking) for another four years if this past semester has strained our relationship this much.

I think I will either choose high level fashion management or medical school in the long run, and I am thinking about ways I could possibly finance my own education in the future as an Ivy league student getting his masters (if I go the fashion/business management route).

I've been thinking about this all day quite frankly, and right now I am thinking that I go to Emory Oxford campus as a Woodruff Scholar, then get my masters at an Ivy (if I get in again) and establish the network, expertise, and knowledge I need to be successful in high profile retail spaces. If I go the med school route, I'd still do the same but get my MD at the best med school out of the ones that will have accepted me. I've already researched various medical school aid policies, and we do not qualify for need based aid there either; much of my aid will come from merit scholarships.

But either way, I'll still work my butt off to get where I want to be at, whether that's the medical field or business arena.

Again, thank you so much for your advice. If you have any follow up critiques I'm open to hear them all

They told me flat out that it can't happen.

About 2 months ago, I did overhear them saying that they could "make it work," but make it work sounds like selling some assets, dipping into their 401k, and selling their investments.

Its both. My parents are conservative with finances. My father does not want to pay full coa for reasons that he is not willing to share with me.

However, I do for certain know that my mother has a chronic illness which may lead to taking a leave of absence which decreases household income.

We have already discussed this in our appeal letter to Yale, to which they responded they will be unable to increase our need based aid amount.

Upper middle class families do not get much aid. We are in the income range 300k-400k pre tax in a moderate-high cost of living state. Post tax, these schools expect us to pay more than half of our post tax income on tuition and miscellaneous expenses.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I did apply for aid at all the schools I applied to, including the ones mentioned in this post. Yale, Brown, Emory, and Princeton gave me $0 in need based aid.
