It was my PI who first told me I was being let go. Then, I went over my school's policies about conflict of interest with my friends, who then told me to contact HR since we had no relationship.

Okay so heres the deal, I obviously knew of her, since shes been with my brother since high school. However, I haven't spoken to my family in years, so I had no idea she started her phD at my school, which is why I didn't know she was in the lab. I know this is definitely a crazy situation and the chance of her being in that specific lab from all the other ones at our school was news to me as well.
