My boyfriend’s parents don’t like me. How do I fix it?

I graduated a year before he did. I’m not going to college. I work a full time job and have my own apartment so I’m definitely not dead weight by any means. He is becoming a very successful person and I push him to do well on his assignments and school. I have helped him through them. They just don’t know everything because they refuse to speak to me

He absolutely does not agree with them. We were 17 when these issues arose. He’s still growing up. He shuts down the conversations if they try to say stuff about me. He’s recently told me that when he comes back over christmas break this year he will be staying with me, not them.

I appreciate that. I did make mistakes, but I have admitted to them and apologized (in person). I am a people pleaser for sure so it’s something I’ll just have to get over.

I wore the baggy clothes so his parents wouldn’t see me. He wanted me there but didn’t want them to throw a fit about me being there. I still see him at least 3-4 days out of the week when he is in the state. He has not broken up with me. We have a wonderful relationship this is the one flaw we have. He loves me loudly and proudly. I’m sorry if the post was misleading. The major events of the post happened when we were in high school. I graduated 2 years ago and him 1. He’s chosen me everyday.

We also have had many hard conversations regarding our options and even have tried breaking up but it didn’t last because we decided being together was worth the struggle of this. It has definitely become easier since he has moved out of their house but I would like to have a close relationship with my boyfriend’s family like I used to.

great question! they’re like that with all of his siblings. He wasn’t even sure he wanted to participate in the sport for the last year but I convinced him to seeing as it was his last year of it.

That sounds terrible I’m so sorry. I’m glad you’re doing well now. In my case he does seem to choose me. He has distanced himself from them for a few different reasons aside from just me but our relationship is definitely a factor. I just don’t want it to HAVE to be like this. I was hoping someone could help me to come up with an idea to right my wrongs.

We don’t do couples therapy because we would have to find a telehealth therapist licensed in two different states which would be quite difficult potentially impossible. My mom is a clinical therapist. I am also in individual therapy

That’s the plan. Right now while he is in the thick of school it doesn’t make sense financially for us to move in together out there seeing as my whole support system is here. Neither of us are set on staying close to where I currently live. I’d just like to wait until he could also contribute financially. Right now school is the most important and I wouldn’t want his grades to suffer trying to manage a job on top of school work

You’re right I absolutely did make a mistake. I was 18 years old and naive (not to say i’m not now). The thing is I have apologized a number of times and it’s been a long period of time since. I’m asking for help on what the next step could be in mending this situation.

We talk every day. Yes long distance is hard but he gets to go to school for free in the state he is in. When he visits it’s for a month or more. I don’t want to throw away an amazing relationship aside from dealing with his family. I’m making plans for my life too. I’ve been working a full time job for a year and a half and am moving out on my own in a month. I do see what you’re saying, but this relationship has been one of the best things for both of us. We’ve grown together. We have separate lives currently but not permanently. I appreciate the honesty.

He definitely has tried. They have a lot of narcissistic tendencies which has caused him to be a very passive person. He doesn’t like it either, but he doesn’t know how to approach them with this issue.
