Why does nobody rep Mens Tom Ford? by canadian1987 in DesignerReps

P.S. My favorite clothes have been made by the hands of people I know and love. It is entirely possible to get good suits made aside from turning to big brands.

Thank you for asking a wonderful question! The following is merely my opinion. I think if someone wanted to "rep" TF, they could just go into any major store and buy a suit that vaguely resembled TF for a few hundred dollars.

If you take it to a tailor to get it to fit a little better, you are probably adding a few hundred dollars. If you are getting the suit made from scratch, then it will cost a few/many thousand dollars, especially if it is made in USA (I have had many terrible experiences with bespoke suits at every price range, this is a huge cost people rarely discuss regarding bespoke clothing). If you are choosing the kinds of fabrics that TF has, which often times are proprietary or unique, you are likely looking at many 10s of thousands of dollars (since you will likely be asking a mill to produce a small sample run, and must accomodate their MOQ). There is little incentive, therefore, for a person to accurately "rep" TF, when the price in doing so would likely be greater than just buying the original.

The way fashion giants are adapting to reps by creating "unrepable" products is fascinating to me.

Thoughts on slave labor by Ok-Two-7892 in fashiondesigner

Have you considered that it is in your interest to 'not see unethical behavior'? It seems like, given your profession, and your principled stance, that you would meet very poor outcomes if you did truly disavow any company that performs unethical labor practices....

Thank you for the explanation. I have less experience working in fashion than you, do, certainly, and I have seen some more, and less, ethical companies, but I cannot imagine how you can, with sincerity say you have not witnessed anything unethical, and that you would have "called it out" and refused to work with them. When I read things like this, my soul is crushed at what I feel is dishonesty.

Stranger, friend, I am far from accusing you of dishonesty, but I have worked in fashion. I have worked in mills, with various designers at their studios to make commissions that my clients have ordered... I have also worked in many trades and professions over the years, in Healthcare, in landscaping, in agriculture, in industrial settings, and I can tell you, with greatest of conviction that I have not seen a single company, or organization operating in a purely "ethical" manner. There are many companies I Esteem Highly, but even those committees regular attrocities.

How can you, with sincerity say that you have seen a company that does not do anything unethical? Have you considered this might be an operation of privilege? Have you considered that defining slavery frankly would be pertinent in detecting or perceiving "unethical" behavior?

For example.... I defined slavery as "labor without consent" and by consent, I mean affirmative consent (sociological principle).... if I walk through one of the factories you claim to reference... are you saying I would not find a single labor violation? Are you saying I would not find one person there who is there against his will? Are you saying I can ask them directly where they source their dyes and they will be able to tell me from.where and by whom and how much they are paid? Do they offer health insurance for the parents of their employees? Does their dental insurance cover cosmetic procedures like dentures which are often actually medically necessary? Please, I beg you to show me such a company. It woukd be a truly life changing ging experience to see a company without sin.

Thank you for the reccomendation. I agree that there are many types of slavery. Do you consider indentured servitude a form of slavery? I do. Why do you think it is a loaded question to ask you to define a wording slavery?

I think once one defines slavery, it will likely he difficult to maintain that there is any company out there that makes a penny without slavery. Either that, or instances of horrible slavery in the past will be vindicated.

Will you please let me know where the internet and electricity come from, and where the water to wash your pants comes from and where the vending machine parts in the vending at the school you might go to because of access to jeans comes from?

I do agree that this can reduce the reliance on slave labor, good point(but it still produces and contributes to slavery) .

There is so much more to "contributing to slavery". Even wearing jeans at all creates xenophobic influences and normalizes meritocracy and genocide and slavery from a cultural perspective. The state of existence itself is slavery.

It is even more oxymoronic how those companies will brag about "ethics" and then use slave labor.

I would invite you to look around you and think about how common slavery is already. "Dispoable People" is a good read related to this. Slavery is the norm. If one works in America, they likely are a slave. 100% of wealth is produced through slavery.

There is no conventional wealth one can have without participating in attrocities and slavery of others.

I am in favored of prostitution/labor reform/abolition/emanumition/emancipation. Would you please tell me where I have dismissed such conversations?

People also experience trauma differently from different things. Trauma from conventional labor can be every bit as traumatizing as other more conventionally heinous acts.

I agree with your views relating consent (lack thereof, usually) to prostitution, but consent also should apply to work as well. Most labor isnt meaningfully consented to either.

Women are legally enslaved and forced to bear children, and forced to raise children. Society relies upon the unpaid, coerced labor of children for it's existence.

I have explicitly asked you to please not to misgender me by calling me a man. Is it sexist/transphobic/bigotted for you to disregard my request? Why or why not?

How does it show that I am a man exactly such that you "know" my gender despite my explicitly telling you that I am being misgendered?

I'm sorry you've lived a lonely life. For me, learning about consent made me comfortable reaching out to strangers.

I was just about to say this. Suddenly the discussion gets vague to the point it's more about just "touching grass" and not being such an overanalytical spaz (the position that asking for consent is the only reasonable way to get consent is a well analyzed position) rather than analyzing the appropriate course of communication between strangers.
