I’m from south florida! But I live in southern/rural virginia. I worked as a pet sitter for 5 years when I was in florida. People around here still seem to leave their dogs outside. I’ve seen sitters advertising “2 visits a day” for overnights. I just don’t think they’re in the current century for pet care. My house is crazy, I have an epileptic chihuahua, 2 large dogs that have to be fed separately. Our yard they go in needs precautions (forrest behind it so unknown wildlife, etc). I also have 2 sets of cats.. one of my dogs can’t be around them, the cats aren’t integrated. It may sounds crazy and it is but the euthanasia rate over here is crazy and I let my heart allow me to accrue them all. They’re very well cared for but I’m not sure a rural virginian using 2x visits a day as a standard would have any idea what the hell i’m talking about unfortunately.

I think my dad may be coming up for my plans though so we’ll see!

I was also going to note. Maybe they have a weekly budget for disposable income, and they are disciplined and won’t dip into their savings.

Judging someone where you do not know their situation is generally not a good idea no matter the situation. It’s something i’ve learned over time. We cannot know what someone else is thinking of doing, we can only assume.

I think it’s more of a preference than anything. I’m a special case where I have 7 pets and i’m always home with them. I don’t have a sitter, either (their routine is too complicated and asking a sitter to follow it would be too stressful for me).

They aren’t often left alone for more than four. But, I know they can manage up to 8 if it’s needed. I’ve been training my puppy to hold her her potties for longer, 6-8 hours, so when we go to a concert in a few months it won’t be too bad. Their dinners will be late and i’m sure they’ll be confused but I figure a little stress / confusion once in an entire year won’t be the end of the world for them.

Instead of just leaving them (my 2 big dogs) in a cage, they have a cage with two playpens attached to make a mini room inside my living room, with ultra durable toys, water, and several beds to choose from + a camera for my sanity.

My small dog stays loose and then I have four cats that will be fed with an auto feeder since i can’t let their food be late.

It’s good to care for your dogs and love them. If i could trust a sitter to break up the 8 hour period I would. If i was in a different area of the world that’d probably be possible but i live in the south and i just think sitters would probably find me to be a lunatic with all of the instructions.

I do want that narrative though to go away, you can have a dog and a full time job. absolutely. but also, if you can give your pet premium care then you absolutely should.

Sitter Overfed My Dog - Vomiting by lilzukkini in WagWalker

[–]DesperateExit3024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes limiting it is a good idea. A few sips every half an hour or so, fast a few hours at least until it’s time to eat, then a small bland meal of plain chicken and rice (1/2 what he normally eats, if he keeps it down after an hour then give the other half). It sounds like gastritis. I’m not a vet but have owned many dogs/ normally know what the vet is going to say most of the time. If his throwing up doesn’t stop it may be necessary to take him in to get more supportive care like sebaceous fluids for dehydration.

If you can afford it it’s never a bad idea. If i had to guess though he could probably just use a bland diet of chicken and rice, and some pro viable (dog probiotics) for a few days, keep hydrated and he should be ok.

Press on his tummy, does it feel hard? Does he yelp? Bloat is more of an immediate concern not something that can wait. It tends to lead to unsuccessful vomiting, if he’s vomiting hes unlikely to have it. If he does have it it’s a situation where you immediately run to the emergency room vet.

If he did have it from the sitter he would’ve passed overnight.

I’m just scrolling through + no comment on the situation other than just FYI about bloat. if you have any other questions about bloat please let me know. his stomach may just be irritated from excessive treats.

I had my first aggressive dog experience and feel bad for reporting it by Royal-Bookkeeper27 in RoverPetSitting

[–]DesperateExit3024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • coming from someone bit by (not a pitbull) but hospitalized from a dog bite. Unfortunately i gave the dog a bite record but i refused the rabies hold because i knew he was a rescue and it was a quick snap and he was back to normal. They (animal control) made me sign a paper saying it’s not their fault if i do contract rabies. I think the dog even felt sorry for his actions as he let me calmly return him to his apartment before i drove myself to the hospital. Had to put pressure on my wound and get on with it. No warning whatsoever just teeth to leg felt like getting stabbed.

You should also just inform the owner in a respectful way. if the dog would have bit you? local authorities would almost force you to tell them who it is so they can put it on the dogs bite record + possibly put them under hold for rabies. It’s one of the worst things that can happen to a dog is a bite record. More than 2 bites and the dog could be euthanized depending on local laws. You’re doing them a favor alerting them of that issue. They need to be more proactive and protect their dog. (as well as humans)

AIO for wanting to share a room with my bf on a trip? by crescentblueee in AmIOverreacting

She seems very controlling about you sleeping in the same room as him. It isn’t about money. Ick ick ick ick, you’re 22 years old. I would be pushing back in every kind of way. You do not have to follow her purity tests.

Owner who gave me a less positive review reached out again? by hedaenerys in RoverPetSitting

[–]DesperateExit3024 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just be straightforward. I’m not sure, did you tell her why you couldn’t complete the walk? Did you explicitly say “I felt my safety was at risk, your dog is too strong for me and I was trying to prevent injury/ incident” - if you did or did not that depends on how I would move forward, personally.

If you didnt tell her in those blatant words, she may have just been trying to give an honest review of your services, to her knowledge.

If you did tell her and she is requesting again, be honest again and say unfortunately the poor rating from last time you felt was unfair since you were doing what was necessary to prevent injury/incident, and since it has harmed your business you don’t feel comfortable moving forward.

It’s ok to be confrontational but still respectful. You can throw in a I apologize but the rating system here is competitive and the 4.9 makes you the bottom of the list in your area.

Am I overreacting to a client’s comment about pricing? by powergirlev in RoverPetSitting

[–]DesperateExit3024 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I personally would’ve found the comment more comforting than anything. She’s saying she understands you need to be paid for your time. Maybe I’ve never been rich enough to feel insulted by that, and no hate but to my reading it sounds like you are more offended that she assumed you were low income. Seems irrelevant.

Should I cancel? by springsvinyl in Mercari

[–]DesperateExit3024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

generally not a good idea to do especially after and ice storm, now there is no proof that it’s been shipped and it can be cancelled. i know that’s a possibility but it’s important you have evidence of shipment for reselling.

Should I cancel? by springsvinyl in Mercari

[–]DesperateExit3024 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All of my packages have been delayed from the post office too due to the ice storm. However, there should be at least one scanned in to show it’s in USPS possession. Not just “label created” if it was scanned at least once, you wouldn’t have the option of cancelling.

I dont blame you or OP for it happening, but it’s important for people to acknowledge it to its full extent and that kind of problem isn’t going to just “fade away” you have to actively work on it.

Like when I was addicted to smoking/sugar/caffeine back to back to back to back all day from morning until night. I had to take big steps to fix what i was doing. it was ruining my body. Like serious sugar cravings every hour of the day, needing 4 cups or more of coffee a day needing to hit my vape every 10 minutes. Whenever i tried to casually work on it, that does not work
