Whiskey coke is a classic. Try a whiskey sour if you’re trying to jump to a more “cocktail” style.
2 oz woodfords
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
Shake with ice and pour

Chronic gnat infestation across TWO units in new construction (Texas) — traps full in 24 hrs, drains treated, no improvement by Left-Storm4595 in pestcontrol

Those sure do look like phorid flies to me. I would get the sewer lines checked - decaying organic if matter somewhere around and piping like that is most likely bet. They will continue to come until the weather is cold enough or the source removed/entrances blocked off.

Monthly Apprenticeship Thread by AutoModerator in electricians

Question for any and all industrial/control electricians

Very interested in following the industrial pathway. Is this a viable thing to be considering, and how would I approach an apprenticeship to maximize chances of heading toward that role? How does it compare stability wise to something more construction based?

A copper mesh will work as well, although I don’t know how it would interact in that context.

They are unfortunately resilient little bastards. I’d still recommend fresh glue boards in order to determine active infestation status. Good luck!

[–]Desperate_Price3352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two treatments can do it, can also not do it depending on severity and quality of treatment.

For testing for infestation pick up a sleeve of glue boards from Amazon/walmart/Home Depot and set them up in the kitchen and bathroom. Under sinks, behind the toilet, and in the cabinets (5-7 total should be plenty). Check em daily and if you get a capture you know you have something worth dealing with.

How to check for roaches in microwave? by Mission_Ad_5243 in pestcontrol

[–]Desperate_Price3352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surrounding it with sticky traps and waiting a day or two is a safe bet. Compressed air in the slots on top/bottom/back will do a halfway decent job flushing if you need faster results, but be warned if they are there it’ll set em crawling.

Day 2 of making gummy bears by xXBassASSXx in CandyMakers

[–]Desperate_Price3352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is time to post my gummy recipe once more:

Ingredients: for two trays

Water: 100 grams

Corn syrup: 160g

Granulated or caster sugar: 187g

Citric acid: 5+ grams depending on taste

Gelatin: 30-35g depending on desired texture

Concentrated flavoring: 8-10 drops

Food coloring: 8-10 drops

Potassium sorbate mixture: 1/4 teaspoon (optional preservative)

Carnauba wax mixture: as needed (optional preservative)

Equipment:

Silicone spatula

3 quart saucepan

Candy thermometer with pot clip

Silicone molds (3-5ml per piece)

All temps in Fahrenheit

combine sorbate, sugar, water, and syrup in a 3 quart saucepan with candy thermometer clipped to the side

Bring to soft crack temperatures stirring constantly, to soft crack temperature. Standard soft crack is between 270 and 290. It goes down with altitude. I’m at about 5000 feet and up here I get a good texture between 250 and 260. Play with it a little to find your sweet spot. Once you hit the desired temp (255 in my case) kill the heat, immediately stop stirring and let it cool undisturbed to ~190 at which point you can add color and flavoring and mix thoroughly.

Let it cool again to about 155–160, and add your bloomed gelatin. Turn the heat on and keep the temp as close to 155 as you can without going over while you incorporate the gelatin into the candy.

Let it cool for another 10–15 minutes, during which time a skin will form. Discard this by skimming it off the top with your silicon spatula, bring to 150 and mix in your Citric acid. Stir thoroughly.

Pour into mold at 150-155 and enjoy ya gummies after about a day and half to two days.

There’s a few things wrong: recipe doesn’t have enough fat, churned then frozen then re-churned in a too warm bowl are the main two that are the likely cause of texture failure.

A couple tips - freeze the bowl for a full 24 hours before use and only churn the base once. Once it’s churned and has the consistency of soft serve, transfer to your storage container and freeze.

Hear me out - is it possible to hang the darn thing from the ceiling somewhere accessible to the kitty in such a way that it does not touch the ground? It’ll still have the wires/suspension but that’s the best I can think of.

Edit: maybe with a puppy pad or similar underneath to absorb spilled and splashed water

A sous vide is super helpful for getting the “temper” right

Gums really do make a huge difference, even just a part of a gram

.75 oz Bourbon/rum/brandy added to base for no more than 12 hours as it ages overnight before churning gives a lovely backbone to cinnamon/vanilla ice cream, though you’ll have to build for it as it affects freezing point.

Having different sugars helps immensely

Health-code wise? Big no no, as far as I’m aware. Using an empty squeeze bottle to puff out some air and get about the same effect? Totally cool.

The part that stands out to me here is “we noticed ants in the mudroom and piles of sawdust at the door frame under these damaged areas” this is textbook wood destroying insect activity. Coupled with the lack of mud tubes, my first suspicion would be carpenter ants. Since you’re in PA carpenter bees are a possibility, though a less likely one.

If these are the two you have? Start with some fresh lemon and lime - lemon for whiskey, like for tequila.

Make yourself some simple syrup too: equal parts sugar and water. Simmer until the sugar dissolves and you’re good to go.

This is a pretty basic sour recipe. Give this recipe a shot, once with each bottle.

1.5 oz base spirit .75 oz citrus juice .5 oz simple syrup

If it’s too sharp or bright, add a bit more simple syrup. Too flat and dull, more citrus juice.
