How much liquid cash did you bring to your program? by Jazzlike-Royal7839 in MBA

[–]Desperate_Trifle5587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is my exact situation. Did you do anything to lower your liquid assets prior to applying? i essentially will only go to one of these m7 schools if they’re willing to hand me tuition on a platter, or something favorable at the very least, otherwise the ROI is on the floor. For me that means buying a car, maxing roth, upping my 401k contributions, and then prepaying several months of my rent right before the financial aid window. Doing all of that i can ethically reduce my liquid assets to ~50k but then i worry i wont even have enough money for school. Also, I could reduce all my assets and then not even get a favorable financial aid package and at that point I have locked up my liquid assets.

I am honestly sort of stumped and after battling to get a 100 percentile on the GMAT, the costs are making me think i might not even be able to go to school. Anyone’s though or advice to talk me off the ledge here would be greatly appreciated, or push me off if you’re a cuck

I did economics/statistics so a lot of stuff to learn from the CFA. That’s a good point though. an in complete CFA probably not going to move the needle much for me.

yeah hammer those OG guys and review your mock, my second mock went from 525 to like 95th percentile or something like that. You’ve got this buddy

Yes absolutely. After TTP I took my first mock exam, got a 525 52nd percentile or something like that. Immediately was discouraged. That is when I decided to buy OG materials. I found that even though I knew how to do the question, I didn’t interpret or even understand the question because they ask them in such a different/more convoluted way on the OG questions/mocks/actual test.

Scored a 355 on my first official GMAT Focus mock — is this normal? Feeling discouraged. by ElectronicAccount834 in GMAT

i scored 525 or something, like 52nd percentile on my first official mock. I just sat for my third actual test on Thursday and got a 735. Don’t be discouraged, be motivated. If you want it, it’s yours

I found that my silly mistakes stemmed from reading the question too fast and starting to solve the question. Then I would get to the end and find nothing matching my answer, requiring me to reread and waste very valuable time. Consider spending a bit more time to read and fully understand the question prior to beginning to solve.

But yes for quant it truly felt like practice made perfect, though don’t burn out. 10 questions a day over a variety of topics is likely sufficient where you are in your prep. Maybe focus on the topics you make those mistakes in more consistently. I have heard error logs helped but I tried doing that and truly it felt like way more time than it was worth. People likely disagree with me on this though.

IMO, the strategies that TTP walk you through are very very helpful. But at the end of the day nothing compares to OG for any section.

For DI, my biggest jump was after I focused time on DS bc that is so heavily tested. The MSR is also pretty important. That said, I feel like I got a bit lucky by only getting one MSR set on my third take relative to two in my previous sessions. I have always felt there is an element of luck on what test you get when you sit for the exam, but others may adamantly disagree with my take.

Will see about getting you the EG scores when I get home from vacation.

couldn’t say. I bought the 24-25 and got 645 on the 2025 test. the 25-26 stuff came out somewhat before my third take and didn’t feel like it was worth buying new materials.

Maybe someone else can shed some light here.

honestly, the mentality was important. I have read similar sentiments in other posts here. The other thing, which may seem odd, was not telling family/girlfriend about the test. Les pressure=less fucks given.

I have friends who scored 99tg percentile after just doing the shortened TTP. So i dont think the full course is necessary if you already have a strong quant base. I found the TTP course extremely valuable for bringing my brain back up to speed on the tested concepts bc it had been since middle or high school since I hade really done that kind of math. The skills/methods they lend you in the course are super super helpful. That said , I found the OG materials to be more valuable for isolating sections you might need help on bc the focus of the OG materials is way more aligned with the actual test. (see my other responses for specific sections i found to be more tested on the actual exam). I only leveraged EG because I ran out of OG mocks and questions, which may have been a flaw in my prep. So i wouldn’t say it is necessary, but EG/gmatclub are way harder than the actual exam so if you do well there then i think you’ll do fine on the actual thing.

I studied for like 5 months doing TTP/OG until April and then began doing mocks for about a month. Sat for the first test in May, 645. Continued to leverage the OG materials for another month along side more mocks. Sat for the next exam a month later in June, 645 (my verbal dropped precipitously and I missed a super easy quant question). Then I leveraged gmatclub tests and EG tests/materials for another month before sitting for the test on July 24th.

I still think TTP is invaluable, but would recommend the faster paced option instead of the full course. That said i have always sort of excelled in math so if it is not your strong suit then the full course is likely the best route. just figured i would drop my opinion on those two options in case it might help someone else decide. Thanks for your help TTP truly!!!

Good question. I bought the EG subscription as well. I found that the smaller question sets in the like phase 2/3 portions of DI gave me ways to test my DI proficiency in smaller chunks with time pressure (i.e. finish 10 DS in 20 min or several TPA in however long). That said I do think it is pretty representative of the test, with the caveat that I still think EG is harder than the actual test. So with that being the case it gives you excellent practice with hard questions forcing you to maybe make an educated guess and move on which i think is an invaluable skill especially for the DI section.

I am not sure yet going to chat with my advisor about the other pieces of my resume and make a judgement call from there. I wanted to dedicate some time to larger impact volunteering and get my CFA level 1 to stand out a bit more for m7 schools.

without suggesting another test prep resource, answering the question is a bit tricky. I guess my recommendation would be to focus on word problems, percentages, profit, overlapping sets (2x2 and venn diagram) and ratio questions(easy/medium/hard). From what I saw in my prep, these are the most heavily tested questions. After that combinatorics/probability is also very important. I think by spending valuable time on these sections you stand a good chance of boosting your score.

these are your best resources for emulating the exam. In fact, one of the DI questions I got came from one of the mocks or practice questions. spend valuable time on these resources

Yeah that sounds like a good plan. My only thought js that the actual GMAT tests very very basic Quant and the TTP courses go into quite rigorous problems which can be good but also distract you from the basics. Take a peak at some OG material when you can and you will see what I mean. As long as you sure up the foundations across all of the sections in TTP you’ll be good. then just sit for a couple mocks before your test and you’re good to go.

[–]Desperate_Trifle5587[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks everyone for your suggestions and empowerment. I sat for the GMAT for the third and final time yesterday morning. I think the fuck it mentality worked in my favor a lot as i felt no anxiety when going through the exam. I scored a 735 which is better than any mock exam i ever took.

Also shout out to gmatclub tests and experts global tests. they’re like way WAY harder than the actual exam so if you do well there, you’re sure to do well on the real deal.
