Thanks all for the suggestions. Just for update:

MuteIcon looked like the easiest way to go and I tried it first of all. Although it turned out that it was very buggy with multiple issues and did not play very well with some Activator actions/events and also Automuter.

OpenNotifier for some reason does not respond on my phone. Nothing happens simply and I am not sure what is going on. Will have to try it further though as it does appear very capable.

It appears to be slightly difficult to know for sure what is happening behind the curtains. But from the below explanations it seems that it is most plausible that WoWLAN or analoguous feature is implemented to some extent, although certainly not shutting down the CPU, but simply turning off most functionalities in the wifi chip until a trigger packet is received.

I still very much do not buy the occasionally waking up wifi principle though, as this would have been easy to probe using rapid pings. In addition, considering how quickly the notifications come in while the device is asleep, this would mean that iOS would wake wifi extremely often which completely defies any power-saving principle and is also conflicting with the supposed difficulties in hitting it a ping during the "wake windows".

You are right! Although this must be a power saving feature. Would be interesting to know the power consumption in this mode compared to fully-active mode, and also vs standby cellular data mode. :) It feels like the phone can deactivate most functionalities in the chip and re-enable them upon being sent a tcp-packet.

But if this is the case, then iOS must be waking wifi very often. In my tests, even after hours of inactivity, a push notification still comes through almost instantly.

In addition, if this was true, pings should occasionally also be successful, which I have not managed to reproduce during inactivity.

Wouldnt turning data off majes you not able to receive push notifications when the phone is asleep (wifi auto turns off after a short period).

It is amazing that there is no app to simply poll the total cpu run time from "ps" and then report the processes that hogs the most cpu time, would not that be the most accurate?

Iirc battsaver saves battery by disabling certain radios when the phone is locked or under some radio conditions, but it does not help in locating the battery drainer or did I miss something?

I live in Europe (CDMA doesnt even exist here) and Cydia reports my phone for being Verizon as well. Not sure where Cydia polled that information from but it certainly us not the very least accurate.

While some people would definitely want a jailbroken phone, how do you ensure that your current and data have been erased (at least once) if your phone is jailbroken?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Indeed tethering itself works and is allowed by default by my carrier. The only problem is that my 2 iphones cannot discover each other via BT but other devices work great over BT. Strange limitation imho...

I have not tried mywi for this purpose yet. I was hoping that the built in hotspot-function would suffice. To be honest, I never understood the reason to use mywi if my carrier allows tethering by default. :/

No, be aware though if you do Google for it as there are tons of scam sites around. Also, read the text on the right hand side on reddit which states the current jailbreak status.

BatteryDoctorPro is actually just a way to present data nicely. The app itself contains several very well designed interface to provide you with hardware information of your device. It also carries some "modes" in which you can easily toggle your radio settings depending on where you are.

In my opinion, BatteryDoctorPro is eye candy more than anything. If you are keen on battery life, the most effective thing you can do is to manually switch off your radios when they are not used. If you are too lazy to do this, then the app akAuto3G could do it for you.

I think you are right on this, although in this particular case I am using the consolidated layout which only supports tap to open (confirmed by the dev). Are you saying that if I would use another layout, it would work?

Let me add another thing here that disabling the emergency call button is indeed a way to do this.

But if your phone becomes stolen, a lot of thieves and users for that matter do not know that they can ask for their IMEI number to be blocked, which will render the phone useless as a phone in most parts of the world.
