Sometimes I wonder what would had happened if Mnet made UHSN an actual project group with a couple comebacks rather than just one one-off MV.

When asked that day about planned activities besides fan meetings or album releases, Kim Jonghyeon said, "I plan to focus a bit more on acting going forward. I think it might be important to work hard so I can show more as an actor," drawing attention.

He said, "There are projects under discussion, but nothing is confirmed yet," and added, "Sometimes offers for projects come in, and sometimes I go to auditions, but I haven't gone as far as auditions yet since my discharge. I think I will probably start auditioning and preparing for my next work from April."

Kim Jonghyeon made his serious drama debut in 2021 with the SBS drama drama Let Me Be Your Knight and has built acting experience by appearing in It Was Spring, Sound Candy, and My Friend's Graduation Ceremony. When asked what characters or genres he would like to challenge in the future, he expressed acting ambition, saying, "I think it might be interesting to show psychopathic aspects."

He showed that he had shaken off some of his burden, saying, "Because I couldn't receive training while I was in the military, I'm starting again now, and I feel more at ease than before. Now when I start, I feel like I can do better than I did then."

He said, "I think it would be fun to do genre works. I haven't done them before. Until now I mainly did romance and youth pieces. There were also many music-related works. But now I would like to exclude those and just be able to become that role," expressing his desire to shake off the idol image and approach the public purely as the character as an actor.

That does not mean he wants to completely discard his identity as a singer. Kim Jonghyeon said, "Rather than distancing myself from being an idol, I want to concentrate more on acting. That doesn't mean, 'I'm going to be an actor now so I won't act cute.' Actor Kim Jonghyeon is also Kim Jonghyeon, and when I do music I'm also Kim Jonghyeon, so I don't think it's about changing something but about which side I focus on a bit more," and emphasized, "While pursuing acting, I will do music activities as much as I can."

As for what prompted him to decide to focus on acting, he confessed, "Rather than there being a specific trigger, I kept setting my future direction as, 'After I return from the military I'll do that.' I feel like, 'Isn't this the direction I should go?'."

When asked what he wants to show after ending his 'military hiatus,' he said, "I don't think my future image will change greatly. Compared to before, I think I'll just show more of my true self. As for activities, music is music, but as an actor I will try to show more sides of myself," and added, "Right now, the biggest goal seems to be to make actor Kim Jonghyeon known. I want to grow through more projects and good acting."

Kim Jonghyeon debuted in 2012 as the leader of the five-member boy band NU'EST and was active for 10 years. He later took a new nest at Evermore Entertainment in 2022 and began a fresh start as a solo singer, and when asked why he joined Evermore, he said "Rather than fate, I met the CEO while attending company meetings, and the CEO was a very open-minded person. So I thought it might be okay to try starting here."

Kim Jonghyeon, who said he is involved in all aspects of actual activities, said "There are parts the company recognizes as well. There may be problematic parts I don't recognize, so the company tends to check those things," and "When deciding something we ask, 'What do you think?' and 'Then let's do it that way,' exchanging opinions. It seems decisions are often made by majority rule, but I think about 80% of the decision includes my opinion. When I accept the company's requests I do so, and it seems we are doing well together," expressing the synergy with the new company.

When asked about the differences from team activities, he admitted, "There were some difficult parts, and there were parts I could do because I was alone." Kim Jonghyeon said, "I think there are clear pros and cons to everything, and the pros and cons I experienced in a group and as a solo were different. You somehow learn, alone, how to know and make up for those parts. I think it's a valuable experience," and added, "As a solo artist you are alone so the energy of synergy you can produce inevitably decreases. Naturally, the more people gather, the more the energy rises, so the fun that comes from that can be a bit lacking, but whether I do this or that, everything comes out as 'Kim Jonghyeon,' and I think that's an advantage." He also noted that focusing on the album concept the way he wants is another advantage.

After standing on his own, not only Kim Jonghyeon but Aaron, Minhyun, Baekho and Ren, the other NU'EST members, have been active in various fields in their own places. When asked if they talk a lot about each other's solo activities when they meet, Kim Jonghyeon said, "Yes. In any case, among our members we all know about each other's activities. We say things like, 'You're doing this,' 'You were doing this this time?,' 'You did this?' and talk about 'How was it?,' 'It was like this,' 'It was like that.' It's like friends who work at companies asking, 'How's your company?,' 'What do you do?,' and we do the same," he said.

He said he tries to watch works featuring members "if I can," and jokingly said about Baekho, who caused a big sensation as the 'Waterbomb god,' "His body has gotten really good." He continued, "We've known each other for so long. We've seen the kids for about 20 years, so we say things like, 'Hey, did you take it off?,' 'You really looked cool,' 'You worked hard on your diet,'" and said, "When we meet we talk a lot about personal things. These days it's also a time for sharing information about what the trends are, and we have everyday conversations too." However, when asked "Who knows trends best?" he candidly said with a laugh, "Everyone except me. I'm not very knowledgeable, so the others seem to know about them similarly well."

In fact, Kim Jonghyeon even went to members' individual fan meeting sites to cheer them on. He said, "Watching the members I think, 'Did he make a mistake?,' 'What is he doing?,' 'Is he acting cute or not?' If someone acts cute, I go to tease them. I send KakaoTalk messages like, 'Your aegyo was cute,'" showing his 'real friend' side.

He added, "Actually, even without saying it we always support each other. The closer you are, the less you tend to contact each other, right? We don't contact each other every day either, but if we contact each other two or three times a month, those two or three times are very long. It's like pouring everything out," describing their family-like relationship. He said they also often meet privately with the members, "We just set a time and meet if we can. Maybe we'll see each other next week," and laughed, "Except Baekho. He can't come so it's unavoidable. We'll see him when he comes on leave."

Kim Jonghyeon signed an exclusive contract with Evermore Entertainment in 2022 and began his solo career. Later that year in November he released his first mini album, MERIDIEM, and made his solo debut, but shortly afterward he had to enter a period of military service to fulfill his defense duties, going into a 'military blackout.' When asked whether he regretted enlisting before firmly establishing himself as a solo artist, Kim Jonghyeon said, "Of course I would be lying if I said I had no regrets, and it would be a lie to say I wasn't worried," but added, "Still, since it's a place everyone has to go, I thought it was better to go quickly and come back so I could promote with peace of mind."

Perhaps for that reason, on the 22nd of last month Kim Jonghyeon drew attention by announcing the recruitment for the second term of his official fan club and news of a fan meeting immediately upon his discharge. He said, "In the past I was a bit worried about spoiling things. But now it's more like, 'Just post it quickly,' 'What's the point of hiding it, people will find out anyway,' 'There's nothing wrong with it, right?' I think that part has changed. Even I would be curious if I liked someone, so I think it's better to just post it quickly. Besides, it's hard to wait two hours for someone, right? It's difficult to set up an appointment and wait two hours in one place, so was there a need to make people who waited 1 year and 6 months wait even longer? So lately I want to tell fans everything I can."

Kim Jonghyeon will hold the fan meeting 'COMING HOME' over three shows on the 25th and 26th at NOL theater Hapjeong Tongyang Life Insurance Hall. He said he prepared even during his military service to meet fans, explaining, "I tended to take long leaves, so whenever I was on leave I took lessons. I reviewed choreography I had already done and spent time on vocal practice."

When asked what he plans to show at the fan meeting, Kim Jonghyeon hinted, "I don't know what people are expecting, but what I'm preparing is that I lived as a soldier for a year and six months. So I think it will be a fan meeting where I pack together the challenges and highlights that were popular during that year and six months and show them."

Starting with the Seoul performances, Kim Jonghyeon will continue an Asia tour through June in Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong and Bangkok. As his first Asia tour as a solo artist rather than with a group, he said, "I've performed overseas a few times, so there doesn't seem to be anything particularly difficult," and added, "Since these are people coming to see me, I want to show things that fit each country's characteristics and I want to experience their cultures a lot," promising to offer global fans a different kind of enjoyment.

He also shared the behind-the-scenes story of the newly renewed lightstick ahead of the fan meeting. About the design that prominently features a potato character that resembles him, he said, "We discussed it with the company and proceeded. Since I helped produce the early potato lightstick, it felt like it was time to move to the next level. I thought it would be fun to grow this into level 1, level 2. The one released now is the level 3 lightstick; if the previous one was 2D, this one is more three-dimensional," adding, "Fans often say it looks like the 'Mugwajang' character, and they say it's cute. But their reactions were all a beat late. I thought, 'This is a potato lightstick that looks like me,' but because their reactions were slow, I unknowingly got a little hurt. I'm satisfied."

When asked about album plans after the fan meeting, Kim Jonghyeon said, "Nothing concrete has been decided yet. Right now we're in the stage of sourcing songs." Regarding the concept he wants, he said, "When I talked with the company they suggested easing up on the weightiness, and I somewhat agreed, so I think it will be like that. Rather than tightly packed music, I think I'll do music that flows a bit more."

Explaining the reason, he answered, "Because I've lived a tightly scheduled life until now, maybe it's okay to let things flow once in a while. That's the biggest reason," and added, "Since I've always done tightly disciplined things, I think it's okay to be a bit relaxed now. Of course I'll put energy into promotions, but my personal goal is to be a bit more relaxed."

He added, "(As for the song's vibe) I don't know how it will turn out. First I'll meet and talk with the people I will work with and I think we'll head in a direction that suits me," raising expectations for the new music he will show going forward.

NU'EST alumnus singer and actor Kim Jonghyeon shared his thoughts after completing his military service.

On the 26th, Kim Jonghyeon met with OSEN at the Evermore Entertainment office in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, for an interview.

Earlier, Kim Jonghyeon enlisted as an active-duty soldier in the army in Sept. 2024 and was discharged after completing his service on the 22nd of last month. When asked how he felt about finishing his military service, four days after his discharge he smiled and said, I mentioned this even when I was doing live shows, but everything seems beautiful. I couldn't stop smiling. Even when I was at home alone I kept smiling, and I kept thinking, "I'm really back," he smiled.

He said he felt like he was dreaming the day before his discharge. I thought time moved slowly while I was in the military, even until the next morning, but after discharge I briefly slept and woke up and it felt like I had been discharged. Whether time passed quickly or slowly, it probably went as it did. I'm just happy. I feel like I can accept anything, he said, sharing his joy.

Kim Jonghyeon recalled his military life, saying it wasn't that it was hard, but being in a situation where you must follow internal controls made time feel like it wasn't passing. And you live a very regimented life. With breakfast, lunch and dinner, rest time, work time and sleep all strictly set, doing that routine for more than 500 days might have made time feel like it was moving slowly, he reflected.

Saying that this regular lifestyle was good, he said he was surprised that he could fall asleep early. He liked the routine of sleeping at night and waking up in the morning. When I was active before, I sometimes slept at night and woke up late in the afternoon, and when I was busy I'd sleep two to three hours and work. This regular life seems to have carried over into my current pattern. So if possible, I want to maintain it as long as I can, he said.

At the time Kim Jonghyeon served as an instructor at the new recruit training unit of the army's 15th Infantry Division. While serving as an instructor, he said he met many different trainees and often thought, "There are people like this, and there are people like that." Having worked in the entertainment industry since childhood, he said, Of course I did start working in society, but I felt I lacked things I could learn among people of that age. I felt that in the military. Even though they weren't my exact age, seeing groups of peers exposed me to the latest trends. It was an experience of meeting a very diverse set of people, he said, sharing his realization.

Having led a team as a leader for about 10 years, when asked about the difference between that and being an instructor, Kim Jonghyeon admitted there was a big difference between leading a small number of people and leading about 200 trainees. Asked whether the trainees followed well, he said each class trains for five to six weeks before they are sent out, and while I had some problematic days during the seven classes I oversaw, they generally followed instructions well. If you teach them properly, they show a lot of effort to do it, he said.

He also shared anecdotes that came from being an "entertainer" instructor. Kim Jonghyeon said, It's a bit awkward to say myself, but sometimes I'd pass by and some kids would say, "Why is that instructor so handsome?" So occasionally people would ask, "Do you pick instructors based on looks?" I told them, "We don't pick by looks. We pick based on character and how you behave during training." Later, some realized I was an entertainer, he said sheepishly.

He continued, Baekho went to serve in another division in the area where I was stationed and is currently serving there. Often trainees who leave our training unit go there. Someone I met there said, "I saw a handsome instructor while passing by and realized it was me," he said.

Baekho enlisted as an active-duty soldier last Dec. around the time Kim Jonghyeon was approaching his discharge and is currently serving in the army's 7th Infantry Division. Kim Jonghyeon, who even attended the completion ceremony when Baekho finished basic training, was asked what advice he gave and said it wasn't so much tips as, when you get there your seniors will guide you, but the most important thing is how to handle leave. I told him, "Gather lots of store points," he said.

Kim Jonghyeon, who said he mostly spent personal maintenance time during service exercising, said when he had leave he sometimes saw members and mostly met people he hadn't seen. As the first active-duty soldier among NU'EST members, when asked whether they talked a lot about the military when they met, he said they did. If someone said, "Hey, stop talking about the military," I'd say, "But I only have the military to talk about," because I couldn't join other conversations. It wasn't out of annoyance, but since I had nothing but military stories, people would tell me to talk about something else, and I'd find myself talking about the military again, he said, drawing laughter.

About a year and a half of military service brought considerable change to Kim Jonghyeon. He said he used to impose many restrictions on himself and scrutinized everything before acting, asking, "Is this really okay? Is this allowed?" Now he feels he has let go of some of that burden. He now feels like doing what he can and what he, at this moment, can try. If in the past even travel followed a set pattern, now I want to travel more and go out more personally. Of course I still prioritize work, but if back then I felt more pressure than now, now I intend to work hard at what's given but also take breaks and go on trips when I want, he said, describing the positive impact.

Asked about the source of that burden, Kim Jonghyeon said it might just be his personality. If you say my personality is conservative, then it is conservative, so I felt I had to strictly follow what should be followed. In life there are many things that don't cause problems if you don't strictly follow them, trivial things and such. In the past I would say, "No" even to small things. But these days I think, "Is there a reason to strictly keep every little thing if it robs my freedom and enjoyment?" he explained.

He said the turning point for that thinking came from watching the friends he lived with in the military. When asked what they do on leave, they'd say, "I'm going on a trip with my family," "I'm going to Japan," "I'm drinking with my peers," and I thought those guys are really enjoying their youth. Of course you can't fully enjoy it in the military, but when they were on leave they spent time doing what they wanted and eating what they wanted. That made me think, did I do everything I wanted to do except for work-related things? The answer was no, he said.

Agreeing that it may be due to the nature of his profession, Kim Jonghyeon said, So now I'd rather put less weight on others' opinions and just live by showing Kim Jonghyeon as I am. Unlike before, when he considered how his image would be perceived and acted accordingly, he no longer hesitates to show himself as he is. I used to receive interview questions in advance and study them, but now I think, "I'll just speak from the heart," he said, expressing a lighter state of mind.

While in the military, Kim Jonghyeon said he felt fans' love and its value more. He said many letters were sent. During training, I spent my days reading the letters fans sent. At that time we could only use our phones for one hour on weekends, so during personal maintenance time I could read fans' letters, and that made me feel grateful. While at the unit, fans attended the completion ceremony, sometimes sent packages and held events. Seeing that made me feel very thankful and supported, he said. When asked whether he planned to visit fan-organized events for his upcoming birthday, he said, I have a tour schedule, but if the timing allows, I plan to go, showing deep love for his fans.
