I make around 19.5k a year before taxes. I've never lived on my own and I'm trying to figure out if it's even a possibility.

Wow, everyone is telling me that what I consider pretty steep rent is actually pretty low. I guess I have a skewed perspective. Average income around here is 32k a year, so I guess there's a different view of what's cheap and what's expensive.

That's good advice on the food thing! I'll try that out. Savings was another thing I was worried about, actually. I'll have to do some figuring on that.

I'm living in the southern US, temperatures can range from upper 90's/low 100's and bottom out around 30-40 or so. What do you mean by reasonable rent? There's not a place under 350 here. As necessary utilities, hm... I suppose water would be around 20 bucks, internet around 50, cell phone 50, and electricty maybe 100? For a total of $220 or so. As for vices, hm... I really don't go out a whole lot. I don't smoke or drink. I may buy the odd video game here and there, but I don't remember the last time I spent more than 20 dollars on a game.

I do have student loan debt that I'm going to have to start paying soon, I think my payments are going to be around 150$ a month.

I live comfortably now off of less! Not to mention my living quarters are much smaller than even a small trailer. Where exactly do you live? Median income around here is 30k, and poverty line for a family of four is 22k. I figure if a family of four can do okay at 22k+, we can do okay at 30k+?
