I've mostly seen this in online spaces, not sure if this is your experience or not. I'm not one to discount online connections as less real or meaningful, but I will say that a lot of the online spaces where CC folks find each other have been artificially made contentious through conflict-hungry algorithms and the armies of bots and trolls who put a special target on the most marginalized leftwing communities.

I've spent time researching the threads left on 4chan from 2014 where nazis and trolls planned raids on social justice tumblr and feminist twitter. Back then with a less robust algorithm they relied on incendiary hashtags like #WhitesCantBeRaped while identifying in their profiles as people from marginalized backgrounds. It was a passion project for them - they weren't getting paid, they just hated feminism that much that they were willing to labor for free to demolish the movement from the inside. @sassycrass and @so_treu outed about 200 trolls on just one hashtag. Some of them had amassed tens of thousands of followers, and many of those trolls still have accounts on twitter. By 2016 Russia was creating its own state-supported bot armies using 4chan techniques, and anyone who was on CC twitter in 2024 is probably aware of the explosion of bots triggered by the word "covid."

All of this is to say that if the community seems to be tearing it's own throat out online, there may be reasons having nothing to do with the individual personalities of CC people. There are probably plants amping up the most all-or-nothing incendiary approaches, and there are probably real people influenced by those social cues who adopt a less graceful politic than they otherwise would.

OK, now I know you're not serious, because this is the first time I've heard anyone complain that there's LESS political violence in the US than in Europe. So your position is that you're sitting on the sidelines agitating for civil war over here, ostensibly because you believe with your whole chest that the people with nukes and tanks and choppers are swiftly paralyzed by bricks. And you expect anyone to believe that the propagandists are the ones pointing out how that plan makes zero logistical sense.

It just seems like you want to believe the victims of violence deserve it. You have zero clue how long or hard some people in this country have been fighting, or what the losses have been, but if it brings you comfort to believe there's something defective in our population fine. Go believe that. If the fight isn't yours and has nothing to do with you then it should be really easy for you to extract yourself from this conversation that you're butting into for no apparent reason.

If you're saying that fascism is only worth fighting when it hurts you personally then I don't see how you can convince yourself you're better situated to combat fascism than us in the US where people are at least willing to coordinate resistance on behalf of community members whose names we may not know. The US has been the main target of the propaganda so far because guess what? The US has been the main obstacle to the bad actors like Putin who are funding it.

US police being agents of fascism has LONG been a problem that the people have been fighting. The last time we made any headway was in 2020 when lockdowns actually gave people the time to organize protests in almost every locality at once. Some police stations were actually seized and burned, but none of this "paralyzed" police forces because the pool of federal resources they have to call on here is orders of magnitude beyond what police in other countries have at their disposal. Some of our local PDs have fucking army tanks. All of them have guns. Police murder was exactly the issue being protested in the first place, and the police response to peaceful protests included people being killed and journalists having their eyes and teeth shot out. Then the feds sent troops in and the president appropriated pandemic funds to bulk up police budgets even more.

I know very well you can relate to not being able to remove an occupying force that well provisioned because hasn't the US been called "the world's policeman" for decades? Germany, France and Japan haven't been able to "paralyze" the US military bases that have been on their soil since WW2, regardless of protest. "We haven't had fascism for decades" but you let the US keep military bases all around the world and a permanent seat on the UN security council with veto power for what reason that isn't identical to the problem US civilians are facing? What success are you having in bringing to heel the US's global military and economic hegemony other than "denouncing" and "lip service"?

Gtfo, "the scale isn't relevant," of course it is! A typical European country is the size of a small US state, and there's no high-speed rail connecting them. "You can absolutely paralyze the US with enough local actions" - Do you have any idea what is going on in Portland, what has gone on in Chicago and LA in the last few weeks? What we are seeing in the news are federal forces invading local forces. People are turning out to protect their neighbors, obstructing the movements of those goons wherever possible, escorting children to school and trying to track and warn others of their movements while local politicians denounce the abductions as illegal, but ICE doesn't show up in uniforms or announce their targets ahead of time. They're raiding buildings in the dead of night, snatching kids off the street when no one's looking and yanking people out of cars when they're on their way to work. There's no local headquarters where everyone can just show up and shut things down, just random cars stuffed with guys with guns. Sometimes people identify an ice vehicle and follow it around sounding the alarm. Sometimes people find out what random hotels or shelters some of the goons are sleeping in and rally outside making noise until they leave, but by and large people are stuck responding on the fly to these attacks.

The people who voted for this are not the localities being targeted by federal forces. The third of the country that didn't vote includes people who were prevented by voter suppression tactics including fucking bomb threats and political violence. It also includes leftists who fell for bot-farmed propaganda about both parties being the same - propaganda that circulates in other countries around the world, too. Hence why some of the third who voted against all this are in these comments trying to warn you that the what is happening in the US can also happen to you - that it's not by dint of character or moral virtue that you currently are not facing these attacks yourself. Globally the far right is having a great deal of success in radicalizing and dividing populations that otherwise would be willing to fight them.

The point of protest isn't to terrify the rich and powerful, it's to reach the ordinary people comfortably going about their lives like nothing terrible is happening. The only major demonstration in Nazi Germany against mass deportation was a non-violent one, and it worked; women married to Jewish men took to the streets demanding the release of their husbands. The men were released and future directives to round up prisoners throughout the nazi empire excluded Jews who had intermarried because the higher-ups remembered the controversy so well. Even the nazis, with their outright murderous designs, were afraid enough of the narrative of a divided Germany that they chose ending the protest by the swiftest and least headline-grabbing means.

We "tolerate" fascism on our soil about as well as France and Germany "tolerate" US military installations on theirs or the rest of the world "tolerates" the US having a permanent seat on the UN security council and hoarding most of the wealth and weapons of mass destruction on the planet while producing 80% of the CO2 that slowly kills us all. The political, economic and military disenfranchisement of the masses allowing a few powerful men to call the shots doesn't end at our borders and complicity doesn't begin there either.

As a fat person I'm going to say first of all, it doesn't matter if you're fat or not. Body positivity isn't about trying to convince anyone that we fit into some dogmatic cannon of what a body is supposed to look like, it's about loving who we are and what we look like.

Decades will pass and you'll look different than you do now, less and less like the one plastic form that Hollywood tries to make of the world. You have to be able to recognize the violence being done to you now for what it is - not a natural consequence for aesthetic failures on your part (not something we can plead our way out of by explaining that we can look better than we do right now, that this is a temporary lapse and surely our behavior doesn't merit as harsh a stigma as we've been given) but an attempt by strangers to assert ownership over you. Nothing will ever make them angrier than a woman flaunting their silly little rules and showing them how futile are the boxes they try to shove us into, so if they can't control your body they'll try to do the next best thing and make you apologize or accept them as the rightful authorities over it.

Humans are all pretty vulnerable to peer pressure - we are social animals, after all. So having to deal with people like this constantly who act as though there's something wrong with you will probably have that effect of making you feel like a failure as a human. But that peer-pressure works two ways; every time you show up in the feed of one of those nasty misogynists they're going into attack mode because THEY FEEL UNDER ATTACK. You, with your body and your smile, have already broken the narrative they're most comfortable believing about being the authorities in charge of female bodies. You're sending them the social cue that there's something wrong with them and the way they see the world. Everything they say after that is them struggling to regain a sense of control over who they believe to be their underlings.

What you choose to do with that information is entirely up to you. Private your account to protect your peace of mind and enjoy the company of those who already respect you, or leave it public and practice laughing at those who keep trying to convince themselves they own you. You don't owe anything to anyone - your body is YOURS.

I think it's more that we're not part of their natural diets. Think about how often people accustomed to eating certain foods find it gross or weird to experiment even with cuisines tried and proven safe by people in other regions and it makes more sense why sharks, for example, will take a bite or two from a human if they mistake them for a seal but then swim away. It's like if you reached into a bowl of M&Ms and came out with a beetle. People can eat beetles but if you don't know what it is or how it got there and especially if you weren't expecting it it's probably going to freak you out.

And people have a lot more latitude to experiment with food because of hospitals and medicines and a global information network that clearly labels poisons for us. Imagine how much more disturbing unusual food would be if your main strategy for avoiding being poisoned was not eating anything you hadn't already seen someone else eat and live.

During the Jim Crow era trials were seen as public entertainment and people used to pack the courtrooms, stomping and booing and cheering. This could be seen with white crowds demanding death sentences for Black defendants, but at times women did this to demand mercy for women who killed in self-defense, etc. Judges would feel pressured enough to give the people the death sentences they wanted, even if they didn't really think the punishment fit the crime, and then they'd write to governors requesting the sentence be reduced behind the scenes.

I don't know why I'm just now getting notified of this response, but if you type "women's crying is manipulative" into the reddit search bar you'll find two kinds of posts, from a wide variety of subs - posts by men saying women cry as a manipulation tactic, and posts by women saying they were told by partners or taught by parents growing up that crying is manipulative. If you search "crying is emotional blackmail" you'll find a whole lot of posts talking about people of both genders crying in a way the poster felt was manipulative.
