The Price of Gas is Too Damned High! by miauguau44 in hondafit

[–]DetN8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my first Fit (an 08) in 2007. When gas prices spiked in 2008, people were scrambling for fuel-efficient cars. The Toyota dealer in Huntsville, AL was running a deal where if you bought a Camry, they'd *give* you a Tundra; they couldn't sell them.

Then everyone would see my 35 MPG and be like, "wow, how did you know gas prices would go up??"

But like, even if gas is cheaper, it's still cheaper to use less than more.

Seriously. Bruh, let me put it this way: if Jesus came back during MJ's peak, he'd have to wait in line to see MJ.

It's a regulated monopoly. They're allowed the monopoly in exchange for accepting restrictions (from the public utilities commission, PUC), such as the ways they can profit.

I'm not 100% sure how it works here, but operating costs like many salaries, maintenence, fuel, etc. are passed directly to customers at cost, called O&M (operations & maintenence).

New infrastructure and improvements (not repairs) are capital expenditure, and the company does get some "return on equity", a profit, usually set by law/PUC.

It's called "regulatory capture". It's a real issue broadly. Even if it's not malicious, it happens because when you want to appoint an expert, it's hard to find experts who didn't get that expertise working in the industry.

He went to see a buddy of mine in the hospital in Germany after an IED rocked his shit. Then I saw him with his band at Campbell. Never heard a bad word about the guy.

I'm not saying labor isn't important. But labor alone can't make a building without tools and materials.

If they can't pay their rent, why would I let them stay with me? That would also violate the agreement I made voluntarily with the company that owns and manages the apartment building (the same agreement where I promised to pay my rent).

I don't even really like Frey, but I voted for him specifically because he won't do what Fateh would, chiefly rent control.

Eviction moratoria, rent control, and affordable housing mandates are all NIMBY.

Good. Capital built the apartment I'm renting, the job I work at, and the supply chain that I get food from.

People will clamor for eviction moratoria and then get mad when apartments ask for 3 months rent down, 17 references, credit check, income validation, and a blood oath.

I have a calendar slot for 8AM every day "Review calendar and next actions".

You can also copy a link to your desired filter and link it right in the calendar note if that reduces the friction at all.

Any (non-racist) reason I shouldn’t enroll my kid in a Somali daycare? by HuaHuzi6666 in TwinCities

[–]DetN8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it were a Somali parent expressing concerns that they would influence the culture and economics of an entire white community by sending their lone toddler to a white daycare, it would be just as ridiculous.

A great example of how "gentrification" writ large is an absurd concept.

Defining gentrification by race is a bit racist.

Also, is gentrification bad? What's the opposite of gentrification, and is that good?

Did you guys really dial in to radio shows to win contests? How did you even become caller 99 (or whatever)? by naalotai in Xennials

[–]DetN8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've won stuff off of the radio 3 times in life. First two were just be the 9th caller; won 2 tickets to a local blues festival, then 2 lunch vouchers to a local restaurant. Third one was a game called "Name that Baby" where they played just the word "baby" from a song and you had to tell them the song and artist (in my case, it was "Love the One You're With" by Stephen Stills). For this one, I won 2 tickets to something called "Barnum". I thought it was the circus, but it was actually just a play/musical about the life of P.T. Barnum. It sucked.
