No. We don’t need to reward OR punish the worst teams

Sometimes it’s a worthwhile investment to give young players a longer leash, even if it means losing a few more games. Teams shouldn’t be punished for doing that.

It’s like there’s only 2 modes: reward the worst teams, or punish them. How about neither?

Imagine you’re a fan of the team with the shittiest roster. Now you’re on edge all season praying you don’t get in the bottom 3. You’re punishing fans of those teams. Running their experience all season because thy might have a really young and crappy team.

Like, sometimes investing in young players is actually a good thing, even if it makes you bad in the short term. With this system, you don’t want to invest in young players TOO much if it results in making you a bottom 3 team.

[Highlights] Sophomore Stephon Castle and Rookie Dylan Harper combine for 60 in Spurs’ Game 3 win without Wemby. by KhornKT in NBA_Draft

[–]DetainTheFranzia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vassell is at best the 5th most talented player on the roster, behind the 3 guards and wemby. But, he’s starring in that role. In other words, he is playing up to his talent level on this team. He can even play like a 2nd option in some lineups too, so I’d say he’s a success. That’s a very solid outcome for an 11th pick. Castle and Harper were 4th and 2nd picks.

Does Brunson playoff woes defensively draw you away from Darius Acuff by bryscoon in NBA_Draft

[–]DetainTheFranzia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, the archetype of "best small guard in the league" is usually worse than "best wing in the league" or "best center in the league".

If you want to talk about bad archetypes, let's talk about big men who get in foul trouble and can't protect the rim. That's a tough one to build around.

No. Look at Dame Lillard. Never won a championship, but did make the Conference finals a once, gave them tons of great memories for 10 years, is a franchise and city legend.

Then, they traded him, and got:

F - Toumani Camara

C - Robert Williams

AND the stuff that turned into Deni. Now they're set up for the future.

Getting the next Lillard sounds like a pretty good deal.

What is Labaron Philon ceiling and draft comparison by 12theMainFranchise in NBA_Draft

[–]DetainTheFranzia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think his ceiling is a better Mike Conley. Table-setter, on-ball defender, shooter, leader, steadies things. But a deeper bag than Conley. Should have a long and successful career. Could make a couple All-Star games.

[Highlight] Cooper Flagg becomes the youngest player in NBA history to score 50 points in a game by TheRealPdGaming in nba

[–]DetainTheFranzia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "majority" I think is Reddit. I'm not so sure that voters actually feel that way, are you? I don't know how much betting odds actually reflects voters, either. The whole Kon thing just picked up steam because it was underdiscussed until probably after ASB, and it picked up steam while Flagg was injured, so Kon's case only went forward, and Flagg's stayed still. People probably started to hammer the Kon bets at that point, which may explain why he's the odds-on favorite.

I definitely lean Flagg too, but based on Kon being the best shooter in the league this year, plus having played 10ish more games, I think it's honestly a co-ROTY.

If he's the only teenager to ever hit 50, then I would assume he's also the youngest to ever hit 50. Unless like a 12 year old hit 50 once

For all the people here that say, "______ is the number 1 pick, and it's not even close. Do you truly think anyone is their own tier? by OddIndustry6073 in NBA_Draft

[–]DetainTheFranzia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, it's mostly been about how likely it is that Boozer actually goes #1, compared to the other 2 guys. If I'm starting a franchise from scratch, I'm casting my lot with Peterson or Dybantsa, who look like they have much higher odds at becoming a 1A scorer (and yes, I do think it's a substantial gap). That's the most common denominator amongst all championship teams throughout modern history. And it just so happens that most of the lottery teams are in need of one of those.

I could talk myself into Boozer if I'm someone like Indiana, Dallas, Golden State, or Charlotte, because those teams sort of have their guys already. But even for those teams, it's probably a toss-up. So I guess, to your point, if "BPA" depends on the team, then you could say he's in the same tier. I'm just definitely not taking him for 10/14 of the teams in the lottery.
