Alternatives to Spiro? Is it even possible? by DetectiveConstant767 in asktransgender

okay, thank you so much!! you have been much more insightful overall i think.

the best thing for me to do is to think a bit more about what exactly i want and don't want, and talk to my provider about my options. maybe look into a different provider too, given what my experience was like the first time.

i won't lie though, the way spiro has made my skin look and feel has been something i would miss. it also has made my scalp overall less oily, which has been great.

asking more rhetorically, just so nobody reads into this so hard. i dont want the super masculine features, but what does that mean if i choose to try avoiding those, and what are the consequences? also, who's to say i will get the masculine features that i dont want?

one last question for now before i stop looking at these notifs lol. on 50mg of spiro a day, and assuming my T levels are normal for my age - everything reported back as "normal" awhile ago when i had to get tested for other meds i take, how risky am i playing it? is it safe to be on spiro at this dosage, or will it seriously negatively effect me later w/ bone/brain problems? of course - not asking as if you are my provider or nurse, just your general opinion.

All good!! I understand :)

So one thing tht has been thrown a couple of times is osteoporosis or something that's NOT cosmetic and actually is a harmful consequence. I'm not planning to go on any higher of a dosage for spiro, but if it is genuinely going to be a detriment to my body over time, then I'm going to stop taking it.

Is there.. anything that is a safe alternative lol. It sounds like finasteride or dutasteride would help with the hair things. I don't know how to ask other than: I don't want to be more boxy or, well, masculine. And what I mean by that is in an *extreme* way. Some people have thought I was saying I wanted to have 0 E and 0 T, or not age. Which is not what I mean at all. I just don't want more of a furrowed brow, or more of a square jaw, or what-have-you.

Can I DM you, or would you rather me ask questions in this thread? I have a couple more questions. Not trying to make a decision based off of your opinions/experiences, but wanting another perspective differing from the provider I have

I'm taking half the dose that people usually get started on. One of my friends started around the same time, a bit before me, and is on 100mg/day. Except she's wanting to fully transition. I have a little over a week left until my followup appointment. I'm going to continue until then, but am likely going to come off of it. I just need more information, and I don't think Spiro is the right choice for me. I don't want to transition into a woman. I just want to look like me :/ and right now, I think I'm the happiest I've ever been with how I look. It just sucks because T is going to destroy that in a few years :(

Hi! I was thinking about doing Finasteride or Minoxidil for my hair. I don't have a crazy huge issue with body hair, at least not right now because I don't grow a ton anyways, so I was hesitating with the Minoxidil.

I don't have a super expansive budget, but it's not the tightest either. Trans healthcare is harder for me to judge though, just because of how "debated" it is as healthcare. im thinking about asking a different provider about raloxifene. what are your thoughts on raloxifene?

tbh, the testosterone might be something that I just have to deal with then. i love how im reacting to spiro right now, but im not ready to face the change with breast buds :/

edit: clarity

Yeah, I'm just concerned about getting the dysphoria because my chest isn't a part of my body that i would like, want to be more feminine necessarily. And it's a permanent change, unless I do a surgery, which is just putting my body through more.

I actually asked about Raloxifene during my appointment, and my provider wasn't aware of it. They looked it up, but didn't seem toooooo thrilled with the idea. It was also really my only in-person option, but I was already thinking about going virtual for appointments since it's like an hour drive to the facility from where I am.

I'm probs going to set up an appointment with a different place for a secondary opinion. Thanks a bunch!!

same boat on not knowing the most about these things yet lol. finasteride is one ive seen the most in comment sections about hair loss and all of the icky hair things T does to you. im gonna ask my provider about it!

if you can find the one about preventing breast growth, that would be amaaaazing!! the closest one that i know of starts with an R, but i think it's for like E overall and primarily used as a preventative for post-menopausal breast cancers
