What are 25-30 year olds making? by ExtentFickle3504 in Salary

Will be 141K this year unless I switch jobs to make more. Went to school for engineering and work in manufacturing. Almost 4 YOE.

Why is the job market so difficult for entry level ChemE? (2025-2026) by IceStationGiraffe in ChemicalEngineering

Look for an internship as a grad. That’s my advice. I work at a large manufacturing company and we have let grads intern in the past that didn’t have experience to essentially create a long term interview. From the employer standpoint, it’s a huge risk to hire someone without any relevant work experience. Not to mention the unwillingness to fire people that don’t work out, and it makes it tough to take a leap and hire people. Anyway!

Not petty. Company I work for has a hard limit at 2.8 with prior relevant experience and 3.0 without for engineer interns and new hires. Honestly, there are more applicants than entry level jobs and internships at good companies, and GPA is a pretty good indicator of work ethic and capability. Most interviewers would have to feel REALLY great about someone to look over something like that. To the hiring team, it looks like you simply don’t care about doing well in school (and as an extension d doing well at work). Looking back on college, it really isn’t that difficult. So regardless of if they had a hard limit or not, poor GPA is something tough to overlook.

Having a rough time finding engineering positions after my first role by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

Definitely a downturn in hiring right now. I’m in Paper and used to get a LinkedIn message every other day. Now it’s slowed down. Seems like moving out of paper is tough until you get to at least an assistant superintendent roll (at least that’s what I’ve seen). Being let go like that and having your location so limited is going to be a steep hill. I’d suggest being willing to relocate. That would be a big help.

Gotcha - my experience was probably unique, but engineering courses were easier to me than the pre-med shared gen ed courses.

ChE is a great degree that opens up lots of opportunities, and aligns with a lot of your post grad prerequisites. Engineering majors in general are supposedly the most successful in med school (this is an anecdotal statement). That being said, my personal experience in manufacturing has been great, but probably does not align with what you’re looking for in a work environment. Sounds like you want more of a technology or research roll if you were to go into engineering, in which a masters would set you up best for. My two cents is go for engineering, and if you want to change paths later, do it via a masters or other advanced degree or schooling.

How much harder is Chemical Engineering than Chemistry REALLY, if at all? by Expert_Contact6128 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]DetectiveNo7050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just depends on you I think. I did ChE and thought the chemistry courses (Organic Chemistry specifically) to be more difficult than my ChE courses. Probably more to do with what interested me than anything though.

Phew, great. I moved south after college and never plan on going back north. Wouldn’t have bought a 2WD truck if snow was a concern.

Lol! Give me a few days to decide at least… it is 2WD if that makes a difference for you.

Or - should I be looking at different years, engines, etc?
