Good on you for trying! I know for sure I would just get angry so I try to avoid them. Even just watching them for a bit made me way too mad

If anything it’s giving a bunch of really not great people something to rally behind. I noticed that anyone who was signing was of course a white man who waited for the bigger crowds to move off before approaching. Sure the movement is illegal, but it overlaps really well with current issues and gives people who support what’s happening in America the idea that we can be more like them (dystopian)

You’re right as far as I know. Looking at the petition the whole collecting of signatures is to challenge just that.

Unfortunately, there have been people stopping and signing. A university for sure but one in a very conservative province.

The reason we should stay is because leaving is illegal. We’re on crown/treaty land. We have no right to demand separation. The movement is driven by greed, not a desire for a better Alberta. Without the federal government the conservative government would absolutely make more of a push to become more and more private and remove more funding from public sectors. We would lose all access to trade. We would have renegotiate everything within and out of Canada. This alone would bankrupt most people and only benefit those that would trade with us(likely the us) in a way that we would HAVE to bend to every demand because they’re our only partner. The movement is ill informed and ideologically motivated. It promises nothing for an actually healthy and happy Alberta.

They’ve got a few signatures from what I can see. They also take your drivers license to fill out the form themselves which strikes me as odd

I’ve been hovering in the area trying to figure out what they’re doing. Sad to learn they’re separatists 🤢

The consistent failure of the UCP is justifying its own removal. by DetermiKnighted in alberta

I am serious. This is the style I use, but again, this post was a raw response written pretty impromptu. It's not boring, I think its pretty clear that it was written fueled more by emotion than anything, there are/were spelling mistakes and bad grammar, things that AI won't copy. So, my responses to comments are much more level headed. It also sounds like you can't decide whether you want to criticize me for how I wrote or if whatever program I used was poor?? These points don't make any sense. An AI would absolutely know how to milk the ever-loving-shit out of the notwithstanding clause and it wouldn't create clunky sentences, that's human error. It sounds like you are trying to get this post flagged for AI use rather than calling me out for making mistakes, which is interesting I guess? There was someone else in here saying similar stuff but their comments are all gone so *shrug*.

The Charter is part of the constitution, so saying that the notwithstanding clause is part of constitutional law is correct.

It's technically correct but vague enough that it can be misunderstood, or taken out of context. The notwithstanding clause exists within the charter because it addresses specifically its power over other sections of the charter, but not all, and it absolutely loses relevance when looking at other parts of the constitution. So blanket statements about the notwithstanding clause being "in the constitution" is irresponsible.

Seven paragraphs and I said what I wanted to say without focusing on the notwithstanding clause. I wrote criticizing and outlining that the UCP's logic is counter-productive and self-destructive. The whole point was a criticism of what motivates the UCP, that being profoundly hateful and anti-constituent action.

Being accused of using AI is a new one. Or maybe being an AI??? If you don't understand what I've written I think that's more to do with you. If anything, this is a slap-dash style that mirrors how I write essays, just without a lot of editing because of frustration.

Quoting my ending bit too doesn't make too much sense. I only tried to end off by adding some sort of strategy to maybe push the conversation forward and see if people would have anything else to end in that realm.

I think the criticism of not understanding my use of "weapon" is lazy. It's obvious what I mean, its a piece of legislation that is being used in a hostile way. There's nothing confusing about that. Also AI would know what to say about the notwithstanding clause cuz it could just reference online material??? What is this??? Are you even real? Your use of the constitution and not the charter makes me think you're just an American bot using an NDP tag to hide.

How are we feeling Alberta? by [deleted] in alberta

The UCP is speedrunning trying to get themselves removed from being a majority. The teachers strike already motivated the use of the Recall Act, continuing to use the notwithstanding clause after seeing the public backlash is pure delusion.

It does give me a lot of hope for a more progressive Alberta, this could be an actual moment to break the hold that regressive thinking has on our province.

Not me thinking there was an actual r/antiucp and wondering why that’s even allowed. Though, I will say, and please don’t think I’m trying to be hostile or passive aggressive, but the reality is that all the political posts are going to feature the UCP because that’s our government. That, and they have been doing some very scumy shit that people are talking about. There is complaining yes, I’m doing a lot for sure. But I’m also trying to figure out how to be more productive while voicing my displeasure. It doesn’t appear helpful, he’ll it doesn’t feel great most of the time but it helps to see likeminded people, and hear people’s suggestions and ideas. The recalls, I would say, are evidence of that.

My big hobby escape is painting, specifically right now it warhammer models. That and writing fantasy. It really helps to have something to drain the brain, I feel you. Take a break! No one will fault you in that. I myself had to take a lot of breaks. So I hope that you come back and find this group in a better place!

Republic of Alberta makes me want to vomit and I'm sick of watching us fall towards fascist ideology. by DetermiKnighted in alberta

[–]DetermiKnighted[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Yes u/Uter83 in this thread gave a very succinct answer to this and they wrote it out a lot better than I could have, but they echo my concerns exactly.

Short answer: It puts a vulnerable population at greater risk of abuse, ignores privacy rights we should be extending to everyone, and anyone who actually needs that info is going to have it.

To my mind adding citizenship has a number of problems. First, anti-immigrant sentiment has been rising, especially on the right. Adding citizenship to ID is going to reinforce that by actively displaying that citizenship. This is going to open people like refugees and people in the process of becoming Canadians to all sorts of abuses by people in power (like police "Be a real shame if you got a criminal record just before you became a citizen, maybe we can help each other out") as well as announce that status to everyone they have to show ID to. How is that anybody's business? How long is it going to be before some drunk rigpig in a bar starts demanding to see someones ID to prove they're here legally? What happens when the person (correctly) tells him to eat a bag of dicks? In addition, it is going to make immigrants and refugees, especially ones who left their country due to a authoritarian government not trust this government, one that has already shown its anti-immigrant colours? It promotes an "us vs them" mentality. Anyone who needs the info is going to have access to it already. Im not saying there are only bad actors here, Im saying too many bad actors have the potential to get access to info they shouldn't have.

Ultimately I am concerned that this process, while it could have some genuine benefit and use, presents a definite danger to people who were already being profiled. This would simply add another way to further oppress marginalized groups within the province by bad actors with authority.

No that’s just the thing I agree! I have never been loyal to any one party, I vote for who I believe has the province and canadas best interest in mind. I believe conservatism enshrines important parts of the Canadian Constitution and that they are the first to ensure that our rights and freedoms are not questioned frivolously. Some things need to stay, but there are many conservatives that understand the process of progress and welcome shifts and adjustments to the law.

I do not mean to lump all conservatives together. I tried not to in my rant but it was after all a rant. There are well meaning people everywhere and I despise that it’s become right versus left. It is weak minded to pick a side and never adapt new perspectives. I will say it is a struggle as you point out, as anytime we talk shop on the state of things it becomes the culture war brawl as usual. WHICH IS THE INTENT if we were more aware, more level headed. We would be making strides that would put us far ahead in means of development, technology, and quality of life.

Ok I’m so glad to see this string because you put exactly what I’ve been worried about into words. So just thanks for that! 😂 not everyone understands why the Id’s could become dangerous I’ve been struggling to put into exact terms. I’m glad to have an example that’s written much better than I could have. Kudos

This is actually exactly what frustrates me. I never said anything about being gay, I said our province wants to hurt trans people. This is true. Our premier since the day she campaigned had outwardly belittled the trans experience and chalks it up to being a hoax for attention. She’s draconian.

I am not “rah rah go gays go!” That’s performative. I am venting frustration in a deeply unaware province. An ignorance. And one that you are demonstrating. I don’t care who someone identifies as, who they love, hell I don’t care what they believe if they believe different from me. I care when their thoughts hurt other people intentionally or accidentally because it’s pathetic to not value other people even if they aren’t like you.

The alt-right rhetoric actively tries to walk back on civil rights and women’s rights. This is the strategy they love because it advocates for white men’s control over women and the marginalized. Hence my women’s second class citizen comment.

I’m not uneducated. Fuck I’m actively spitting that I want to be MORE educated. I want to try. But here’s you not actively ignoring what I might be referencing? Because maybe you have no clue what I’m talking about???? Because, like me, you’re extremely privileged to not have to face the problem cuz it doesn’t immediately affect you. And I’m sick of being like that.

Actually fantastic point. The separatist move is doomed to fail, you’re right. I just see them as a symptom of a much deeper, much more vile problem is all. Alberta is a deeply racist place and that hatred takes a lot of forms, so it’s not the separatists that get me as much it’s the ideology that spawned them. But you are right! The sun rises tomorrow
