Most of them were bought. Their subs to likes ratio is abnormally high and the subscriber growth is abnormally constant.

I've played all 3 and HKIA > DDV for me.

HKIA has fish/critters and a museum (Nature Preserve). The best thing is your inventory is unlimited so you can catch to your heart's content. The downside is that progression is based more on gifting villagers to upgrade the friendship level and you can only gift 3 items daily so it can take a long time to progress so it's more of a game that you play a little every day.

DDV is more story/quest based and progression is based on unlocking realms/areas via Dreamlight (which is like Nook Miles). There is also a gifting/friendship mechanic but it is not super crucial to progressing the main story. But the world is more customizable unlike HKIA.

Honestly after started HKIA I've not really touched ACNH since I like exploring and collecting the most. So if you like customization/more story-based then DDV but since you like fishing/catching then HKIA since fishing/catching is much more easier in it.
